Five Bear Types That Can Outweigh Many Grizzlies—With the Size Caveats That Matter

Polar bears lead by species, while Kodiak and other coastal brown bears can be far heavier than many inland grizzlies. Here is what the weight ranges, averages and record-sized individuals actually show.

Yes, some bears are larger than many animals people call grizzlies—but “five species bigger than grizzlies” is not a scientifically sound ranking. Polar bears are the largest living bear species. Kodiak bears and other food-rich coastal brown bears can also outweigh inland grizzlies, sometimes by a wide margin. The key distinction is that a grizzly is an inland population of the brown bear (Ursus arctos), not a separate species, and bear size changes with sex, season, geography and food.

The five entries below therefore describe large bear species, subspecies, populations and documented size cases. They are useful comparisons, not five uniformly larger species. A 200-pound inland male and a 900-pound coastal male may both be called brown bears, while neither number represents every bear in that group.

What “bigger than a grizzly” actually means

“Grizzly” usually means an inland brown bear. The National Park Service explains that brown bears generally range from 200 to 1,000 pounds, depending on sex, location and season. Coastal animals are often called brown bears because abundant salmon and other food allow them to grow larger; the Kenai Fjords National Park account notes that brown bears and grizzlies are the same species, Ursus arctos, with the common name reflecting habitat and diet.

That makes a simple species ranking misleading. “Bigger” might mean heavier body mass, longer body, greater shoulder height or taller standing height. The sources used here provide weight figures, but not a directly comparable set of length and height measurements for all five cases. The fairest comparison is therefore weight, with the sex and measurement conditions stated alongside every figure.

Five large-bear cases compared

Case What it represents Sourced weight information How to interpret it
Polar bear A distinct species and the largest living bear species Approximately 400–1,450 lb (NPS, updated February 13, 2025); typical adult males 600–1,200 lb, with the largest males exceeding 1,700 lb (Alaska Department of Fish and Game, accessed 2026) The strongest species-level answer, although the ranges overlap with large brown bears
Kodiak brown bear A brown-bear subspecies restricted to Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago Females 300–700 lb; males 600–1,400 lb (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, accessed 2026) A population-level comparison with inland grizzlies, not a separate species
Coastal Alaska brown bear Large coastal brown-bear populations with rich seasonal food Adult-male population averages in coastal Alaska reach about 360 kg (794 lb); overall adult-male brown-bear averages are about 200 kg (440 lb), ranging from about 90 kg (200 lb) in Jasper (IABR, accessed 2026) An average for a population, not the weight of every individual
Kenai Fjords coastal brown bear after fall feeding A location- and season-specific size case Males can reach 500–900 lb after fall fattening; 1,400 lb is described as not unheard of (NPS, updated April 15, 2019) A seasonal condition, not a year-round typical weight
Exceptional salmon-fed coastal male An extreme individual within large coastal brown-bear populations Some coastal males with salmon access can exceed 770 kg (1,700 lb) (IABR, accessed 2026) An exceptional maximum that should not be treated as a population average

1. Polar bears: the clear species-level answer

If the question is asking for a bear species that is larger than grizzlies, the polar bear is the defensible first answer. The National Park Service identifies the polar bear as the largest living bear species. Its broad profile gives an approximate adult range of 400 to 1,450 pounds.

A second source shows why one range should not be substituted for another. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game describes typical adult male polar bears as 600 to 1,200 pounds and says the largest males can exceed 1,700 pounds. The National Park Service figure is a broad species range; the Alaska figure focuses on adult males and separately identifies an exceptional upper end. Neither should be presented as the weight of every polar bear.

Polar bears also demonstrate why “largest” is not the same as “always heavier.” A large coastal brown bear can overlap the lower or middle part of a polar-bear range, while a smaller female polar bear may weigh less than an exceptionally large male brown bear. The species-level distinction remains: polar bears occupy the top position overall, but individual comparisons depend on which animals are being compared.

2. Kodiak bears: the heavyweight brown-bear subspecies

Kodiak bears are brown bears, but they are a recognized subspecies found only on the Kodiak Archipelago. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service profile gives females a 300-to-700-pound range and males a 600-to-1,400-pound range.

Those sex-specific figures are important. Combining male and female values into one “Kodiak bear size” would hide a substantial biological difference. The male range reaches well above the size commonly associated with inland grizzlies, while the female range overlaps more broadly with other brown-bear populations.

The same Fish & Wildlife Service account says Kodiak and other coastal brown bears can weigh about twice as much as interior bears commonly called grizzlies. “Can” is doing the scientific work in that sentence: it describes a broad population contrast, not a rule that every Kodiak bear is twice the weight of every grizzly. Seasonal fat storage also means an individual’s mass changes through the year.

3. Coastal Alaskan brown bears: population averages, not a new species

Coastal Alaska contains some of the heaviest brown-bear populations because salmon and other concentrated foods support substantial fat reserves. The International Association for Bear Research and Management reports that adult-male brown-bear averages vary by population: about 90 kilograms (200 pounds) in Jasper at the low end of its example and about 360 kilograms (794 pounds) in coastal Alaska at the high end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 360-kilogram figure is a population average for adult males, not a maximum and not a universal coastal-bear size. It is nevertheless a powerful explanation for why “grizzly versus brown bear” comparisons can look contradictory. An inland population living on a less concentrated food supply may average far less than a coastal population of the same species.

Taxonomy adds another caution. Brown-bear subspecies boundaries remain debated, and regional labels such as “coastal brown bear” are often ecological or geographic descriptions rather than separate species. Treating every named region as a different bear species would exaggerate the number of genuinely distinct animals in the comparison.

4. Kenai Fjords males after fall fattening

A bear’s weight depends partly on when it is measured. Before winter denning, brown bears consume large quantities of calorie-rich food and can add substantial mass. The National Park Service’s Kenai Fjords account says coastal males can reach 500 to 900 pounds after fall fattening and that a 1,400-pound male is not unheard of.

This is a location-specific and seasonal statement. It should not be turned into a claim that Kenai Fjords males normally weigh 1,400 pounds throughout the year. The figure illustrates a documented upper end in a productive coastal environment, where salmon and other foods can support much larger bodies than are typical for many interior bears.

It also explains why photographs and field reports can create apparently conflicting impressions. A bear seen in late summer or autumn may be near its annual maximum, while the same animal would weigh less after winter or during a period of scarce food. A comparison that omits season is incomplete.

5. Exceptional salmon-fed coastal males

The most extreme case in the available evidence is not a separate species or even a standard population statistic. The International Association for Bear Research and Management reports that some coastal male brown bears with access to salmon can exceed 770 kilograms (1,700 pounds).

That number belongs in an “exceptional individual” category. It is larger than the typical ranges quoted for most grizzlies and overlaps the very largest polar-bear claims, but it does not mean coastal males generally reach that mass. Exceptional maxima are useful for showing biological potential; they are poor tools for describing what a representative bear weighs.

Because these animals are still Ursus arctos, this fifth case should not be counted as a fifth species. It is the upper extreme of the same brown-bear species that includes inland grizzlies. The distinction protects the reader from a common error: turning a list of large populations and record-sized individuals into a false list of five separate bear species.

Why no honest ranking puts five species above every grizzly

  • Grizzly is a population label. Inland brown bears called grizzlies include animals of very different sizes across North America.
  • Sex changes the comparison. Adult males are generally heavier than females, so a male-to-female comparison can reverse the apparent ranking.
  • Season changes body mass. Fall fattening can add enough weight to move an individual into a different size category from its spring condition.
  • Food supply changes population averages. Salmon runs and other concentrated foods help explain why coastal brown bears are often much heavier than interior bears.
  • A range, an average and a maximum are different statistics. A 360-kilogram coastal-male average cannot be compared as if it were a 770-kilogram exceptional maximum.
  • Measurements are not interchangeable. The cited sources do not provide matching length, shoulder-height and standing-height measurements for all five cases, so weight is the only consistent comparison here.

How to use these comparisons when identifying a bear

  1. Identify the geographic setting. Inland habitat suggests the animal may be called a grizzly; coastal Alaska or the Kodiak Archipelago suggests a coastal brown-bear comparison.
  2. Ask whether the figure is sex-specific. Keep female and male ranges separate instead of averaging them into a misleading single number.
  3. Check the season. A late-autumn weight may reflect peak fat reserves before denning rather than a yearly norm.
  4. Classify the statistic. Mark it as a broad range, population average or exceptional maximum before comparing it with another source.
  5. Use the species name carefully. Polar bears are a distinct species; Kodiak bears and coastal brown bears are forms or populations of brown bear, the same species that includes grizzlies.

The accurate answer in one sentence

Polar bears are the largest living bear species, while Kodiak bears and other well-fed coastal brown bears can outsize many inland grizzlies; the evidence does not support five separate species that are all categorically larger than every grizzly.
