Flexible Feline Spines Shed Light on the Falling-Cat Problem

A 2026 study found that cats’ thoracic spines twist more readily than their lumbar spines, helping explain why the front of a falling cat rotates before the rear during air-righting.

A cat turning upright during a fall is not violating physics. It is changing the shape of its body. New 2026 research suggests that the cat’s spine is mechanically specialized: the thoracic region twists more readily than the lumbar region, and the front of the trunk rotates before the rear.

That finding gives a clearer anatomical basis to the classic falling-cat problem, while preserving an important role for vestibular sensing, rapid muscle activation, limb and tail movement, and landing mechanics.

The short answer: cats do not break the laws of physics

A cat released upside down can turn toward a feet-first landing because it is not a rigid object. It changes the shape of its body, coordinates rotations between its front and rear sections, and uses sensory and muscular control to complete the maneuver.

A 2026 study adds an important anatomical detail to that explanation: a cat’s spine is not equally flexible from front to back. The thoracic region is more permissive in axial twisting, while the lumbar region resists that motion more strongly. Observations of two live cats also found that rotation of the front of the trunk was completed before rotation of the rear. Together, those findings support a sequential “front first, back second” strategy for air-righting.

That is a refinement of the falling-cat explanation, not a final account of every part of it. Vestibular sensing, rapid muscle activation, limb movement, tail position, body bending, and landing mechanics all remain relevant.

What the 2026 feline-spine study found

Higurashi and colleagues examined how different parts of the feline spine respond to twisting. The researchers separated thoracic and lumbar spinal sections and tested them independently using destructive mechanical-failure tests on five cat cadavers. They measured several properties, including:

  • maximum torque, or the twisting force reached during testing;
  • torsional range of motion;
  • the size of the neutral zone; and
  • stiffness, meaning how strongly the tissue resisted twisting.

The study then added behavioral observations by recording air-righting movements in two live cats. That combination matters: the cadaver work describes mechanical properties of isolated spinal regions, while the live-cat observations show how a whole animal actually sequences its movement.

The thoracic spine was more flexible in torsion

The thoracic region had a larger torsional range of motion, a larger neutral zone, and lower stiffness than the lumbar region. It also reached a lower maximum torque in the test setup.

In practical terms, the front portion of the trunk could twist more readily, whereas the lower-back region resisted axial twisting more strongly. The reported thoracic neutral zone was 47 degrees; the lumbar region had no neutral zone detected in the testing. A neutral zone is a range in which a structure can move with comparatively little restoring resistance.

That 47-degree value should not be treated as a universal amount of “free rotation” available to every living cat. It was a measured mechanical property of the tested thoracic specimens under the study’s conditions. The result also does not mean that the lumbar spine is immobile. It means that, compared with the thoracic region, it offered greater resistance to this type of twisting in the experiment.

Likewise, the lower maximum torque measured in the thoracic specimens should be understood as a result of the isolated testing arrangement, not as a simple measure of whether a living cat’s back is safe or unsafe.

The front of the body turned before the rear

In the live-cat recordings, anterior trunk rotation was completed earlier than posterior trunk rotation. The authors interpret this as sequential trunk rotation: the front turns first, followed by the back.

This sequence fits the mechanical pattern found in the cadaver tests. A relatively compliant thoracic region can help the front of the trunk begin changing orientation, while a comparatively stiffer lumbar region helps separate the movement of the rear portion from the movement of the front. The cat is therefore not rotating as one solid block. It is coordinating the orientations of different body segments.

The observations do not establish that every cat uses precisely the same timing or movement pattern. The live sample contained only two animals, and the cadaver sample contained five specimens. Breed, age, body condition, spinal health, and the details of the release could all affect the result. The study provides a strong anatomical interpretation of sequential air-righting, but not a population-wide measurement of feline performance.

Why the falling-cat problem looks paradoxical

The classic falling-cat problem begins with a seemingly simple scenario: a cat is released upside down with little or no initial angular momentum. If the cat were a rigid body, conservation of angular momentum would appear to prevent it from rotating into a feet-first position without an external torque.

But a cat is not rigid. It can bend, twist, extend, tuck, and change the distribution of mass around its body. A shape-changing body can reorient itself while keeping its overall angular momentum consistent with the external forces acting on it. Internal movements redistribute rotation between body sections rather than magically creating a net spin from nowhere.

A simplified way to picture the maneuver is to imagine the front and rear of the cat as two linked sections. By changing the shape and effective rotational inertia of each section, the cat can rotate one part more rapidly while another part rotates differently. It can then change its configuration again and continue the reorientation. The exact movement is more complex than a two-part sketch, but the essential point is that changing shape gives the animal options that a rigid body does not have.

The 2026 findings make that general physics more anatomically specific. They suggest that the cat’s spine is mechanically specialized along its length, rather than being one uniformly flexible structure. That regional specialization is compatible with a coordinated tuck-and-turn sequence in which the front and rear of the trunk do not have to move at the same time or in the same way.

What the study does not prove

The new result should not be used to dismiss other explanations or body parts. It does not show that the limbs, tail, bending motion, vestibular system, or muscle activation are irrelevant. Nor does it provide a single quantitative model that assigns a precise percentage of the final rotation to each component.

The available evidence still leaves open important questions, including:

  • How much of the total reorientation is produced by the thoracic and lumbar spine compared with the limbs and tail?
  • How do bending and axial twisting interact during the maneuver?
  • How does the cat’s nervous system adjust the sequence when the release angle, height, or body orientation changes?
  • Do cats of different ages, sizes, breeds, or physical conditions show materially different spinal mechanics?

A larger study using three-dimensional, multi-camera motion capture and a more diverse group of cats could help answer those questions. The current study supports a compelling mechanical interpretation, but it is not a complete unified model of feline air-righting.

The vestibular system helps initiate the response

Spinal flexibility supplies a mechanical capability; it does not decide how the cat should orient itself. Sensory systems and muscle activation are also part of the righting response.

A 1976 study in the Journal of Neurophysiology measured muscle activity in cats unexpectedly dropped from a height of 50 centimeters. It reported an early response beginning as soon as 15 milliseconds after release. That early burst disappeared after bilateral labyrinthectomy, a procedure that removes the function of the inner-ear labyrinths and therefore implicates the otolith-related vestibular system.

The same research identified a later phase beginning approximately 75 to 140 milliseconds after release. This phase was less affected by labyrinthectomy. The authors concluded that both phases contributed to smooth landings from short falls.

This timing helps explain why the cat-righting reflex is best described as an integrated sensorimotor behavior. The vestibular system detects changes in orientation and contributes to the initial response. Later muscle activity helps execute and refine the movement, while the body’s regional flexibility allows those muscle-driven actions to change the cat’s configuration.

Righting is not the same as absorbing impact

Turning upright and surviving the landing are related but distinct problems.

A 2014 biomechanical investigation examined cats jumping down from different heights. It found that cats actively changed the degree of back bending and their landing angle. The study also calculated that some kinetic energy could be stored briefly as elastic strain energy in the back. Its beam model estimated back stiffness from the morphology of the vertebral spine.

Those findings concern how impact energy is handled when the cat reaches the ground. The falling-cat problem concerns how the animal changes orientation before impact. A cat can be upright at contact and still suffer serious injuries if the fall generates more force than its limbs, back, chest, and other tissues can tolerate.

The distinction is important because the phrase “cats land on their feet” can sound like a guarantee. It is not. The righting reflex improves the odds of a feet-first orientation; it does not make falls harmless.

Why engineers study falling cats

The same physics has influenced robotics research. A 1992 paper from the Robotics Society of Japan analyzed falling-cat twisting with a jointed double-column model. The researchers also developed a robot with a vertebrate-type backbone and twisting mechanisms.

The reported prototype recovered 180 degrees of rotation within 0.6 seconds when released upside down from approximately 1.8 meters. The engineering lesson was not that a robot had become a cat. It was that a shape-changing structure can control its attitude in the air without relying only on conventional external torques.

For aerial robots, spacecraft, and other systems, this is a useful design principle. A machine with movable internal joints can alter its configuration and redistribute rotational motion. The cat provides a biological example of that strategy; the robot is an analogy and proof of concept, not evidence that feline anatomy has been completely replicated.

A deeper history of the cat-righting question

For a broader history of the question, Falling Felines and Fundamental Physics by Gregory J. Gbur is a natural companion. Yale University Press describes the 2019 book as covering the physics, physiology, photography, robotics, and history behind attempts to understand cat-turning. It is background context—not a source for the 2026 spinal-flexibility findings.

Can a cat be injured in a fall?

Yes. A successful righting response does not guarantee a safe landing. Veterinary guidance lists sprains, broken bones, head trauma, and chest or abdominal injuries among the possible consequences of falls. Some internal injuries may not be obvious immediately.

Veterinary literature uses high-rise syndrome for injuries associated with falls from two or more stories. Affected cats can sustain thoracic, abdominal, orthopedic, and orofacial trauma. The risk is not limited to very tall buildings: a lower fall can also cause serious injury depending on the cat’s position, the landing surface, the angle of impact, and the animal’s health.

If a cat has suffered a serious fall, contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service promptly, even if the cat appears able to stand or walk. Do not encourage a cat to jump from a height, drop one to recreate the experiment, or test its righting reflex at home. The 2026 mechanical study used donated cadaver specimens, and the live-cat observations were conducted under an experimental protocol; neither provides a justification for home experimentation.

Bottom line

The falling cat is not defeating physics. It is exploiting the physics of a flexible, actively controlled body. The 2026 study adds evidence that this flexibility is regionally organized: the thoracic spine twists more readily than the lumbar spine, and the front of the trunk completes its rotation before the rear. That supports a sequential air-righting strategy while leaving room for the vestibular system, muscles, limbs, tail, and landing mechanics to contribute.

Most importantly, the ability to turn upright should be understood as a survival adaptation—not a promise that a fall will end safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a cat violate conservation of angular momentum when it turns in midair?

No. A cat is not a rigid body. By bending, twisting, tucking, and extending different sections, it changes its configuration and redistributes internal rotation while remaining consistent with conservation of angular momentum.

What did the 2026 feline-spine study actually test?

The 2026 study tested separated thoracic and lumbar spinal sections from five cat cadavers and recorded air-righting in two live cats. The thoracic region had greater torsional range of motion, a larger neutral zone, and lower stiffness than the lumbar region. The live-cat observations found that anterior trunk rotation was completed before posterior rotation.

Are cats safe because they land on their feet?

No. The righting reflex can help a cat reach the ground feet first, but falls can still cause broken bones, sprains, head trauma, and chest or abdominal injuries. Serious falls should receive prompt veterinary attention, even when no obvious injury is visible.

How is air-righting different from a cat absorbing the impact of a landing?

Not exactly. Air-righting determines orientation before impact, while back bending, limb posture, and other body mechanics help manage impact energy after or during contact with the ground. These are related but separate biomechanical problems.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cats can reorient in midair because they change body shape, not because they violate conservation of angular momentum. The 2026 findings suggest that a more torsionally flexible thoracic spine helps the front of the body rotate before the rear, but the righting reflex remains a coordinated behavior involving sensory feedback, muscles, and the rest of the body. A feet-first landing can still cause serious injury.
