Flora arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with 84 other cats after an Oklahoma shelter closed. At first, the shy tabby kept to quiet corners. Caregivers later discovered an affectionate, playful cat—and she was eventually adopted by a family who adores her.
How Flora came to Best Friends
When an animal shelter in Oklahoma had to close, Best Friends Animal Society offered to take in some of its pets. In a feature published August 14, 2025, the organization reported that 85 cats arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, including Flora. That is the number reported for this shelter closure, not a general statistic about shelter transfers. Best Friends’ account of Flora’s story was written by Alison Cocchiara.

A cautious cat with a little wobble
Flora was shy when she arrived. She kept to herself, was especially cautious around other cats, and preferred quiet corners where she could watch from a safe distance. Best Friends veterinarians identified cerebellar hypoplasia, which the feature describes as affecting balance and coordination. Flora’s case was mild; she was a little wobbly.
Caregiver Riley Prewett summed up her mobility this way: “She gets around pretty well,” The feature says Flora could climb, play, eat on her own, and use the litter box.

Small accommodations helped Flora settle in
Caregivers made everyday tasks more accessible with soft food bowls and easy-to-access litter boxes. Best Friends describes Flora’s condition as lifelong, painless, and not worsening over time. Those details are specific to the account of Flora; the feature does not suggest that every cat with cerebellar hypoplasia needs the same accommodations.
The affectionate cat behind the grumpy look
As Flora grew more comfortable with her caregivers, they saw a different side of the reserved tabby. She enjoyed tossed balls and was especially fond of laps. Prewett joked, “We call it her resting grump face.” But, as the caregiver put it, “She will find your lap,”
