Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteReuniting a lost pet with its person works best when several routes are used at once: make the animal identifiable, report it to local shelters and animal services, and share a clear photo with nearby people and a photo-matching service. If you find an unfamiliar animal, put safety first; do not approach or handle it if doing so seems unsafe.
I found a pet, what should I do?
- Keep a safe distance and assess the animal. Do not rush at or grab an unfamiliar dog or cat. If it appears aggressive, injured, or too distressed to approach safely, contact local animal control or authorities. If it is safe, take a clear photo and note the exact location and time.
- Look for visible identification. Check for a collar and tag without putting yourself or the animal at risk. Call any listed number; if no one answers, leave a message with your name and a callback number.
- Arrange a microchip scan if there is no useful tag. A veterinary clinic or animal shelter can scan for a chip. The scan provides an identification number; it does not reveal the owner unless that number is connected to registry contact details.
- File reports in more than one place. Create a found-pet report on Petco Love Lost, which lets users upload a photo, search for possible matches, and create shareable materials. Also contact local animal services, nearby shelters, and veterinary offices directly.
- Ask nearby people for help. Neighbors and people who work nearby may recognize the animal. If someone claims it, ask for reasonable proof, such as veterinary records or photos of the person with the pet.
- Follow your area’s instructions. Reporting and handling requirements vary by jurisdiction. Ask local animal services what to do rather than assuming one county’s rules apply everywhere.
My pet is missing, what should I do?
- Prepare a clear, current photo and description. Include the pet’s size, color, distinctive markings, last-seen location, and the date and time it went missing. Keep these details consistent across reports so sightings can be compared.
- Report the pet online and share the alert. On Petco Love Lost, upload a photo to search for a possible match or create a lost-pet alert if none appears. The service says its photo-matching system searches its national listings and considers features such as size, color, facial features, and coat attributes.
- Contact local animal services and shelters directly. File a lost-pet report with animal control and nearby shelters, then check their listings and visit where appropriate. Petco Love Lost says most shelters list found pets but cannot guarantee that every shelter in an area participates.
- Check the microchip record. Find the chip number and confirm that its registry record has a current phone number and email address. A chip is useful only if it can be scanned and its number leads to contact details that still work.
- Alert the immediate neighborhood. Ask neighbors and nearby businesses to watch for the pet, share flyers in the area, and contact nearby veterinary offices. Respond promptly to calls or messages so a possible sighting can be checked while it is fresh.
Why use both a collar tag and a microchip?
A collar tag and a microchip provide different routes to identification. A tag can display contact information directly to a finder; a microchip can still identify a pet if its collar is lost, but it requires a scanner and a current registry record.

| Collar ID tag | Read the contact information printed or engraved on the tag. | Provides a quick visible way to reach the owner, but can be lost or removed. It does not provide GPS location. |
| Microchip | Have a veterinarian or shelter scan the pet, then use the ID number to look up registry details. | Can remain with the animal if a collar is lost. It is not a GPS device, and the registry information must be current for the owner to be contacted. |
The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends up-to-date collar identification as a quick way to identify a found pet and explains that a microchip is not a tracker. Its brochure states: “The microchip is not a GPS device and cannot track your pet’s location, even if the pet becomes lost or stolen.” See the AVMA microchipping guidance.

How to make a pet easier to identify before it goes missing
- Keep a readable tag on the collar. Put a phone number or another reliable contact route on an engraved tag, and update it when your details change. A tag makes information visible without a scanner; it is not a tracking device.
- Ask your veterinarian about microchipping. Confirm that the chip is registered, that the number can be read, and that the registry has current contact information. A chip number without a reachable owner record is much less useful.
- Check both identification layers periodically. Make sure the tag is legible and attached securely, and confirm that the chip registry still has working contact details.
What online pet-recovery services can—and cannot—do
Photo-matching and alert services can make a pet visible beyond the people who happen to be nearby. Petco Love Lost says its service is free to users and allows people to upload photos, look for matches, and create shareable lost- or found-pet materials. Its database is not a substitute for direct local reports because participation by every shelter is not guaranteed.

Local practice can differ: Austin Animal Services, for example, directs people to report found pets through Petco Love Lost and to share information through neighborhood channels. Follow the instructions for your own city or county, and keep contacting local shelters even after posting online.
Service-reported totals should not be treated as the odds that any individual pet will be found. Petco’s FY2022 sustainability report, published in 2023, reported almost 18,000 pets reunited through Petco Love Lost to that point after the program launched in April 2021. AKC Reunite’s fact page reports more than 5 million enrolled pets and more than 460,000 pets returned home, without stating a year on that page. These are organization-reported cumulative figures, not a comparable current success rate or a guarantee of recovery.
