The Florida panther is the state animal in the narrow statutory sense; the other nine represent birds, marine mammals, fish, reptiles, a tortoise and a butterfly. Florida’s government does not publish one law titled “the 10 official state animals.” This list combines the animal designations shown in the Florida Department of State’s symbol index and Chapter 15 of the Florida Statutes. You can cross-check the index at Florida State Symbols and the statutory categories in Chapter 15 of the 2026 Florida Statutes.
What “10 official state animals” means in Florida
Florida law assigns symbols by category rather than placing every species under one generic “state animal” title. That is why the list includes a state bird, two kinds of marine mammal, two kinds of fish, three reptile-related symbols, a tortoise and a butterfly. In biological language, all ten are animals; in Florida’s legal language, each has a specific designation.

The distinction matters when someone asks for Florida’s state animal. The precise answer is the Florida panther. If the question means Florida’s official animal symbols collectively, the ten below are the defensible roster.
In other words, “10 official state animals” is useful shorthand for ten official animal-related symbols. It should not be presented as the name of a single statutory list. The Department of State index gathers the categories in one place, while Chapter 15 supplies the legal designations and wording. Reading both together prevents a category from being accidentally omitted or renamed.

The 10 symbols at a glance
| # | Common name used by Florida | Official designation | Broad setting or group |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Florida panther | State animal | Land mammal |
| 2 | Mockingbird | State bird | Bird |
| 3 | Manatee | State marine mammal | Freshwater and coastal waters |
| 4 | Porpoise, also commonly known as the dolphin | State saltwater mammal | Saltwater |
| 5 | Atlantic sailfish | State saltwater fish | Saltwater |
| 6 | Florida largemouth bass | State freshwater fish | Freshwater |
| 7 | American alligator | State reptile | Freshwater wetlands and other waters |
| 8 | Loggerhead turtle | State saltwater reptile | Coastal and ocean waters |
| 9 | Gopher tortoise | State tortoise | Terrestrial |
| 10 | Zebra longwing | State butterfly | Insect |
The categories and names in the table follow Florida’s official index and statute. The state’s index does not specify a mockingbird subspecies, so “mockingbird” is the accurate form here.
The table is also a practical way to see why the count reaches ten without repeating an animal. “Marine mammal” and “saltwater mammal” are separate labels, as are “state reptile,” “state saltwater reptile” and “state tortoise.” The two fish entries are separated by saltwater and freshwater. Each row therefore contributes a distinct official category.
Florida’s official animal symbols, explained
1. Florida panther — state animal
Florida Statute §15.0353 states: "The Florida panther is hereby designated and declared as the official Florida state animal." The complete provision is available from the Florida Senate’s §15.0353 page. The Department of State records that Florida students selected the panther in a statewide vote in 1982. That student choice became the symbol’s legislative designation in chapter 82-61.

This is the one entry that answers the short, singular question “What is Florida’s state animal?” The other entries are official symbols, but they do not replace the panther’s narrow legal title.
2. Mockingbird — state bird
Florida’s state-symbol index lists the mockingbird as the official bird. The source uses the common name without adding a subspecies, which is important because casual lists sometimes present a more specific bird name than the state does. As the bird entry, it occupies a different statutory category from the panther and the marine symbols.
3. Manatee — state marine mammal
The manatee has Florida’s state marine mammal designation. It is separate from the saltwater-mammal category, so a list that calls the manatee the state saltwater mammal is using the wrong legal label. The Department of State’s index and Chapter 15 both preserve this distinction.
For readers organizing a classroom or family list, “manatee — state marine mammal” is the clearest wording. It identifies the official category without implying that Florida law limits the animal to ocean water.

4. Porpoise or dolphin — state saltwater mammal
Florida’s statute uses both common names: "The porpoise, also commonly known as the dolphin, is hereby designated as the Florida state saltwater mammal." The exact statutory wording appears in Florida Statutes §15.038.
Because the law itself pairs the names, “porpoise or dolphin” is not a contradiction between two separate symbols. The reviewed official wording does not resolve the entry into a more specific species name, so the statutory common-name pairing is the safest form to publish.
5. Atlantic sailfish — state saltwater fish
The Atlantic sailfish is Florida’s saltwater fish symbol. Its category distinguishes it from the freshwater fish designation below. In a coastal-state symbols list, this is the fish associated with marine water, while the largemouth bass represents inland freshwater.
6. Florida largemouth bass — state freshwater fish
Chapter 15 identifies the Florida largemouth bass as the state freshwater fish. The official wording includes “Florida,” so dropping that qualifier and writing only “largemouth bass” loses part of the state’s chosen common name. It also makes the entry less precise than the government list.

7. American alligator — state reptile
The American alligator is Florida’s state reptile. The Department of State says the designation dates to 1987; its historical note is available on the State Reptile page. This broad reptile category is distinct from the saltwater-reptile and tortoise categories that follow.
That separation explains why a complete list contains three reptile-related entries without treating them as duplicates: the alligator is the general state reptile, the loggerhead is the saltwater reptile, and the gopher tortoise has its own tortoise designation.
8. Loggerhead turtle — state saltwater reptile
Florida law names the loggerhead turtle as the state saltwater reptile. The category signals a marine or coastal role and is legally separate from the alligator’s state-reptile title. In an educational chart, retain “loggerhead turtle” rather than shortening the name to “turtle,” because the official symbol identifies the particular common name.

9. Gopher tortoise — state tortoise
The gopher tortoise holds its own state tortoise designation. Florida’s framework does not fold it into the state reptile entry, even though tortoises are reptiles biologically. The separate title is one reason the official-symbol list cannot be reduced to a simple list of broad animal classes.
10. Zebra longwing — state butterfly
The zebra longwing is Florida’s state butterfly. A butterfly is an insect, and insects are animals in the broad biological sense used by this article. Florida’s symbol index treats the butterfly as its own official category, so it belongs in a ten-symbol answer even though it is not a mammal, bird, fish or reptile.
How the categories fit together
One land mammal with the singular “state animal” title
The panther is the only entry whose legal designation is simply “official state animal.” If a quiz allows one answer, choose Florida panther. If it asks for animal symbols or all official animals, use the full category-based set.
Two marine-mammal designations
Florida distinguishes a state marine mammal (manatee) from a state saltwater mammal (porpoise, also commonly known as the dolphin). Treating those as one combined symbol erases a distinction written into the statute.
Two fish categories
The sailfish and Florida largemouth bass divide fish symbols by water type: saltwater versus freshwater. Their paired categories make the list useful for explaining Florida’s marine and inland environments without claiming that one fish represents every habitat.

Alligator, loggerhead turtle and gopher tortoise are not three versions of the same designation. They occupy, respectively, the state reptile, state saltwater reptile and state tortoise categories.
A bird and an insect complete the set
The mockingbird represents the bird category, while the zebra longwing represents the butterfly category. The state’s use of “animal” in the broad sense allows the insect to appear alongside vertebrates.

A short designation timeline
The panther’s history explains why it is the singular answer. Florida students selected it in a statewide vote in 1982, and chapter 82-61 supplied the legislative history for its designation. The Department of State identifies 1987 as the year the American alligator was designated state reptile. Those dates describe when symbols were selected or designated; they are not population statistics or rankings.
No comparable year is needed to identify the remaining entries in this list. Their current labels come from the Department of State index and the category provisions in Chapter 15. When a worksheet asks for a date, use the documented panther or alligator history rather than guessing a year for another symbol.

- Singular versus collective wording: Some pages answer only the narrow legal question and list the panther. Others collect every animal-related symbol from the state index.
- Category names get shortened: “State marine mammal” and “state saltwater mammal” are not interchangeable in Florida’s statutory scheme.
- Common names are modernized: The law’s “porpoise, also commonly known as the dolphin” explains why either word may appear, but the paired wording is the most faithful quotation.
- Biological and legal groupings differ: A gopher tortoise is biologically a reptile, yet Florida gives it a separate state tortoise title; the zebra longwing is an insect but remains an official animal symbol.
- Unofficial additions appear: A page may mix symbols, mascots or wildlife facts with legally designated symbols. The ten entries here are limited to the animal categories identified by Florida’s official index and Chapter 15.
How to cite Florida’s list accurately
- Use the Florida Department of State symbol index as the concise cross-check for names and categories.
- Use Chapter 15 of the Florida Statutes when the legal category or wording matters.
- For the panther’s exact designation, cite §15.0353; for the porpoise/dolphin wording, cite §15.038.
- When writing a headline or quiz answer, say “Florida’s 10 official animal symbols” to avoid implying that one statute creates a single ten-animal roster.
Quick reference for families and classrooms
For a simple study sheet, pair each name with its category exactly as follows: Florida panther—state animal; mockingbird—state bird; manatee—state marine mammal; porpoise or dolphin—state saltwater mammal; Atlantic sailfish—state saltwater fish; Florida largemouth bass—state freshwater fish; American alligator—state reptile; loggerhead turtle—state saltwater reptile; gopher tortoise—state tortoise; zebra longwing—state butterfly.
A useful classroom exercise is to have students sort the ten cards twice: first by official designation, then by broad setting or group. The first sort demonstrates that legal categories are not interchangeable. The second shows how land, freshwater, saltwater, bird and insect groupings can coexist in one state-symbol set without changing the official names.
The Department of State also provides an official symbols coloring-book PDF at What are Florida’s State Symbols?. It is a government educational resource; its availability does not establish that a similarly titled commercial book is currently sold elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Florida’s official state animal in the singular?
The Florida panther. Florida Statute §15.0353 calls it the official Florida state animal. The other nine entries are official animal symbols in separate categories.
Why does the list contain ten animals if Florida has one state animal?
The count combines the state animal with official categories such as state bird, marine mammal, saltwater mammal, fish, reptiles, tortoise and butterfly. It is a collective symbol list, not one statutory roster titled “the 10 state animals.”

Is Florida’s state marine mammal the same as its state saltwater mammal?
No. The manatee is the state marine mammal. The porpoise, also commonly known as the dolphin, is the state saltwater mammal. Florida treats those as separate designations.
Should the fourth entry be called a porpoise or a dolphin?
Use both names when precision matters. Section 15.038 says, “The porpoise, also commonly known as the dolphin,” and then gives it the state saltwater mammal designation. The statute does not require a more specific species name in this wording.
What are Florida’s three reptile-related symbols?
The American alligator is the state reptile, the loggerhead turtle is the state saltwater reptile, and the gopher tortoise is the state tortoise. Their titles are distinct even though a tortoise and turtle are reptiles biologically.
Which fish are official Florida symbols?
The Atlantic sailfish is the state saltwater fish, and the Florida largemouth bass is the state freshwater fish. Keep the word “Florida” in the bass’s common name because it appears in the official designation.
When was the Florida panther chosen as the state animal?
Florida students selected the panther in a statewide vote in 1982. Its legislative designation is associated with chapter 82-61.
When was the American alligator designated state reptile?
The Florida Department of State identifies 1987 as the designation year.
Is the zebra longwing really an animal symbol?
Yes. It is Florida’s official butterfly. A butterfly is an insect, and insects are animals in the broad biological sense used when listing all ten symbols.
