- Record the scale display. Make the number readable in photographs or video and retain the surrounding context so the display is not an isolated, unexplained image.
- Check certification timing. The scale’s certification must be no more than 12 months old on the date of the catch.

Florida’s current rules for tiger sharks
FWC lists tiger sharks among the shark species prohibited from recreational harvest in Florida state waters. The existence of an old, legally accepted record does not create a present-day permission to keep one. Anglers must follow the current rule set rather than treating the 1981 entry as a precedent for harvest.
FWC’s handling guidance says prohibited sharks must remain in the water with their gills submerged when caught from shore or from a vessel. When fishing from shore, the shark must be released without delay.
