Fluffy bunnies are appealing companions, but rabbits need more than a cozy cage and occasional treats. Before adopting one, prepare suitable space, a hay-centered diet, daily exercise and enrichment, grooming, and access to a veterinarian familiar with rabbits. This is a general care guide; individual needs and local welfare requirements can vary.
Before you bring a rabbit home
Set up the essentials before adoption: housing that allows the rabbit to move appropriately, an appropriate daily diet, opportunities for exercise, and enrichment. Merck Veterinary Manual’s rabbit guidance, reviewed in July 2026, emphasizes planning for housing and daily exercise as part of care. Rabbits are not a one-size-fits-all pet: size, number of animals, health, and local standards affect what a suitable setup looks like.

- Arrange a safe, usable living area that supports movement and is practical to keep clean.
- Have good-quality hay or grass, clean water, and suitable feeding equipment ready.
- Plan for daily activity and safe places to hide, explore, and chew.
- Identify an appropriately experienced veterinarian before a health concern arises.
What should a rabbit eat?
Hay or grass should be the foundation of a rabbit’s diet. Scottish Government pet-rabbit guidance says the daily diet should consist mainly of large quantities of good-quality, dust-free feeding hay and/or fresh or dried grass. It describes a small amount of specialist rabbit food as a possible source of nutrients and minerals. Agriculture Victoria advises that rabbits need to eat their own body weight in grass hay each day; this is a government care recommendation, not a reported survey result.
Provide clean, fresh water and keep it readily accessible. The UK government’s rabbit welfare code calls for a nutritionally adequate daily diet and accessible clean fresh water. A hay rack can help keep hay cleaner and reduce waste, but it does not replace a suitable feeding setup.

Housing, exercise, and enrichment
Choose housing around the rabbit’s ability to move, not a universal enclosure measurement. The sources cited here do not establish one dimension that is right for every rabbit. Breed size, how many rabbits will share the space, the layout and usable floor area, and applicable local welfare standards all matter.

Grooming and everyday health checks
Make observation part of your routine. The UK welfare code describes alertness, bright eyes, good posture, active eating and drinking, and healthy fur and skin as signs associated with good health. It also identifies changes such as loss of appetite, discharge, abdominal distention, abnormal droppings, sneezing, or lameness as concerning signs. The code is written for farm rabbits, so use these general observations as prompts to seek advice—not as a complete companion-rabbit care standard or a way to diagnose illness.
Notice what is normal for your rabbit, including appetite, drinking, droppings, movement, and grooming, so you can spot a change. Grooming needs depend on the rabbit’s coat and condition; follow guidance from a veterinarian familiar with rabbits for technique and frequency. House Rabbit Society’s materials include grooming tools in its care checklist, but a supply list is not a substitute for individual advice.

When to contact a veterinarian
Contact an appropriately experienced veterinarian if your rabbit is unwell, injured, or showing a change that concerns you, especially a loss of appetite or abnormal droppings. Ask for professional guidance when changing foods causes concern or when you need a diet plan tailored to an individual rabbit. General welfare guidance can help you prepare and observe, but it cannot examine or diagnose your pet.
Rabbit-care recommendations and legal requirements differ by location. Check local veterinary and animal-welfare authorities for requirements that apply where you live.
