Yes. Fossil evidence indicates that anacondas had reached an estimated length of about 5.2 metres by 12.4 million years ago. The finding suggests giant body size was established early in the anaconda lineage and persisted into the present—not that every ancient anaconda was that long.
What the anaconda fossils show
A 2025 peer-reviewed study reports fossils of Eunectes, the genus that includes living anacondas, from the Miocene Socorro and Urumaco formations in Falcón State, Venezuela. The researchers estimate that anacondas had reached about 5.2 metres in total length by 12.4 million years ago.
That is an estimate of body length, not a direct measurement from a complete fossil skeleton. The evidence shows that giant size was present by that time; it does not establish the length of every individual or the average size of the ancient population.
How scientists estimated the snakes’ length
Vertebrae provide clues to total body length
Snakes have many vertebrae, and vertebral dimensions scale with body length. The team used measurements from fossil vertebrae in statistical regressions to estimate total length. They also checked those estimates against ancestral-state reconstruction on a time-calibrated boid family tree.

Combining measurements with an evolutionary reconstruction is more informative than treating one unusually large bone as proof of a record-sized animal. But it remains an indirect estimate: the fossils do not provide complete skeletons for every snake represented.
Why the discovery matters for anaconda evolution
Gigantism appeared during a period of extensive wetlands
The first appearance of anaconda gigantism coincided with the establishment of the Pebas wetland system in tropical South America. The Miocene also brought warmer global temperatures, extensive wetlands and abundant food—conditions associated with unusually large body sizes in several animal groups.

The timing links anaconda gigantism with that environmental setting, but it does not prove that one factor caused the snakes to grow large. The study does not isolate a single mechanism that kept large body size in the lineage after climate and habitats changed.
Large anacondas outlasted other giant reptiles
The study’s evolutionary contrast is that large Eunectes persisted while other giant Miocene reptiles later went extinct or were replaced by smaller-bodied descendants. The fossil evidence therefore points to anacondas reaching a giant form early and retaining it for roughly 12 million years.

How large were the ancient anacondas?
The researchers did not find evidence of a seven- or eight-metre Miocene anaconda. Lead author Andrés Alfonso-Rojas, a Gates Cambridge Scholar, said: “This is a surprising result because we expected the ancient anacondas were seven or eight metres long. But we don’t have any evidence of a larger snake from the Miocene when global temperatures were warmer.”
The study’s estimate is about 5.2 metres by 12.4 million years ago. It supports an early history of large-bodied anacondas, but not a claim that Miocene anacondas routinely reached greater lengths than modern ones.
