His death prompted neighborhood mourning and renewed criticism of robotaxis, while a local supervisor called for counties to have more say over where driverless vehicles operate.
Who was KitKat?
KitKat was a familiar presence at Randa’s Market in the Mission District. The San Francisco Chronicle described him as a nine-year-old tabby; people in the neighborhood called him the “Mayor of 16th Street.” Daniel Zeidan, part of the market’s family, told The Guardian that the nickname reflected how well known KitKat was locally.
How did KitKat die?
On October 27, 2025, a Waymo struck and killed KitKat outside the market, according to The Guardian and the Chronicle. Waymo’s account, as quoted by The Guardian, was: “While our vehicle was stopped to pick up passengers, a nearby cat darted under our vehicle as it was pulling away.” That is the company’s explanation, not an independent investigative finding.
A Los Angeles Times report published January 29, 2026, later described video showing KitKat under the vehicle for several seconds before it pulled away, as well as a woman trying to lure him to safety. The Times also reported criticism of Waymo’s account. This later description adds context to the dispute, but the coverage cited here does not establish a separate official finding about the collision.

How did the neighborhood respond?
Reports published in early November 2025 described people mourning KitKat and paying tribute to him, including a memorial. The Chronicle reported mounting scrutiny after the killing, while The Guardian quoted community members describing his place in the neighborhood. For people who had come to know him around the market, KitKat was not an anonymous animal in the path of a vehicle; he was a familiar part of daily life.
Waymo told The Guardian it offered condolences and had made a donation to a local animal-rights organization in KitKat’s honor. The company also said that “trust and the safety of the communities we serve is our highest priority.” These statements explain Waymo’s public response; they do not resolve questions about how the vehicle handled the moment.

Why did his death become a robotaxi policy flashpoint?
The incident fed into a larger argument over who should decide whether driverless vehicles can operate in a community. On November 5, 2025, Axios reported that San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced a resolution urging state leaders to let counties decide whether driverless vehicles could operate in their communities.
The proposal reflected a tension between statewide consistency and local control. State-level rules can provide a common framework, while local decision-making gives residents and county officials a direct voice in deployment. The coverage cited here establishes that Fielder proposed the resolution; it does not establish that it became law or changed robotaxi operations.
