Noggin, an eight-year-old Oriental short-hair, did not regain his confidence through a fixed programme. He recovered at his own pace in a quiet foster home, where his carers gave him space, kept their visits short and predictable, and waited for him to come closer. His story, told by Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on 22 October 2024, shows what that patience looked like in practice and where its limits are.
Why Noggin ended up in foster care
Noggin had been closely bonded with his owner and often followed them around the house. When that owner could no longer care for him, he entered Battersea’s care. He was anxious and did not settle well in the cattery, so Battersea arranged a foster home where he might feel more relaxed (Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, “A second chance for Noggin: fostering a nervous cat,” 22 October 2024).
The loss of a familiar person and routine is the starting point of the story. Noggin’s hiding and slow approach to people were part of his adjustment to that loss, not a fixed trait, and the account treats them that way.
The foster home and the settling room
Sharon and Graham are foster carers who grew up with cats. They chose fostering after moving to a house on a busy road, where they felt the traffic made owning a cat too risky. Their home gave Noggin a single settling room to begin with, which is where his slow progress started.

At first Noggin squeezed into a small gap under a sofa bed in that room. He came out at night, when the house was quiet, and stayed hidden during the day.
How the carers approached him
Following Battersea’s suggestion, Sharon went into the settling room twice a day to encourage Noggin to come out. She did not force contact. The visits were regular, so he could learn when they would happen and that they did not end in a grab or a restraint.

The account describes three things her carers did consistently:
- Visited twice a day, at predictable times.
- Offered a treat from her hand once he was willing to take it.
- Gave him time and space when he retreated, rather than pressing for contact.
Sharon’s own summary of the approach was simple: “patience is key and that the cat will be comfortable when they’re ready.”

Noggin’s progress, step by step
The story describes a gradual sequence rather than a single breakthrough. The table below sets out each stage as Battersea reports it. Where the account gives no date or length for a stage, the table says so.
| Stage | What Noggin did | Timing reported by Battersea |
|---|---|---|
| Hiding | Stayed in a small gap under the sofa bed; came out at night when the house was quiet | Initial period; length not stated |
| First contact | Briefly poked his head out while Sharon visited | Nearly a week after visits began |
| Taking a treat | Took a treat from Sharon’s hand, though small movements or noises could send him back into hiding | Gradual; date not stated |
| Leaving the room | Ventured out of the settling room but remained easily frightened by human interaction | Date not stated |
| Keeping distance | Sat across the room from his carers in the evening | Date not stated |
| Play and brief touch | Played briefly with a string toy and accepted a very brief cheek rub | Week seven |
| Seeking affection | Jumped onto the sofa beside Sharon for cheek rubs and head scratches, and curled up on her lap to sleep | Later; date not stated |
Two points matter for reading this timeline. The nearly-a-week wait before Noggin first showed himself is a single cat’s experience. The week-seven milestone is also specific to him, and Battersea’s account does not give the total length of his foster placement.

What this case does and does not show
The account is a single cat’s story, told by the organisation that placed him and reported in October 2024. It does not establish a standard timeline for nervous cats, and it does not test one method against another. Battersea compares nothing, and it does not present the string toy as necessary.
What it does show is a pattern worth copying: predictable, low-pressure contact; food offered rather than handed over under pressure; and a carer who treated each small step as the cat’s decision. Those are reasonable habits for anyone fostering a frightened cat, but they are not guaranteed to produce the same result, and some cats may take much longer or need a different arrangement.

Practical lessons for anyone fostering a nervous cat
- Give the cat one quiet room with a hiding place it can reach without being disturbed.
- Visit at fixed times, keep each visit calm, and leave when the cat retreats.
- Use a treat as an invitation, and do not press it on the cat.
- Expect progress to be uneven: a cat may come forward one day and go back into hiding after a sudden movement or noise.
- Introduce play only after the cat shows interest, and keep it brief.
- Wait for the cat to choose contact, such as sitting nearby or jumping up, before attempting touch.
Noggin’s story ends with him curled on a lap, but the route there was made of many small decisions, none of them forced.
