Start by contacting the rescue organization and a veterinarian: they can confirm what is known about the cat’s health and pregnancy, advise on food and treatments, and tell you whom to call after hours. Then prepare a quiet nesting space and learn which changes during labor or nursing need urgent veterinary attention. Every cat’s needs differ, so use this guide alongside case-specific advice from her care team.
1. Coordinate with the rescue and veterinarian
Ask the rescue organization what is known about the cat’s history, health, and possible pregnancy dates. Arrange veterinary advice early, especially if the cat has an existing condition or seems unwell. Cats Protection recommends seeking veterinary guidance about pregnancy support and treatments; a veterinarian can advise whether any parasite treatment is appropriate for this particular cat.

- Confirm the feeding plan and whether the cat needs an examination or follow-up.
- Ask what to do if labor begins, including the rescue’s preferred clinic and after-hours emergency contact.
- Check who is responsible for arranging care and how to reach them promptly.
There is no single foster protocol that applies to every rescue or every cat. Follow the instructions given for this animal rather than starting medications or treatments on your own.
2. Treat the due date as an estimate
VCA Animal Hospitals gives a typical feline pregnancy duration of 63–65 days, with a stated range of 58–70 days. These figures are a general guide, not a reliable due date for a cat whose mating date is unknown. If the timing is uncertain, ask the veterinarian what signs to watch for and when to call; seek advice sooner if she appears ill.

3. Feed for pregnancy and nursing
VCA recommends a high-quality commercial kitten food or an appropriate growth formulation during pregnancy. It also describes diets that have passed feeding trials for gestation and lactation, or are labeled for all life stages. Cats Protection likewise recommends good-quality kitten food for a pregnant cat. Check the food’s life-stage suitability with the veterinarian and follow their advice on portions and any transition from the current diet.
Avoid abrupt changes and do not assume that extra food is always better: both underfeeding and overfeeding can cause problems. During nursing, the mother’s energy needs rise substantially. VCA recommends kitten food or an appropriate gestation/lactation or all-life-stages food, but the right amount depends on her condition and litter size, so a single portion target will not fit every cat.

4. Prepare a calm nesting area
Set up a warm, clean, dry, draft-free place away from household traffic and other pets. Cats Protection suggests a semi-enclosed option, such as a box, lined with clean, dry blankets, and advises avoiding harsh lighting. Give the cat time to settle. If she chooses another safe, comfortable spot, do not force her into the prepared nest; ask the rescue or veterinarian how best to make that area suitable.

5. Observe labor quietly and know when to call
During birth, watch from a distance and avoid disturbing or making the cat anxious. Cats Protection advises contacting a veterinarian if she strains for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, if a kitten appears stuck, or if she suddenly becomes weak. Excessive bloody discharge or greenish discharge without a kitten also warrants veterinary advice.
Greenish discharge can occur after a kitten or with an afterbirth, so its presence does not mean the same thing in every moment of labor. If you are unsure about the timing or what you are seeing, call the veterinarian rather than trying to intervene or waiting for certainty. These are general escalation signs, not a substitute for instructions tailored to the cat.

6. Check that kittens are nursing and the mother is well
After birth, keep the area quiet and avoid handling very young kittens unless needed. Observe whether each kitten is feeding and whether the mother is caring for them. Cats Protection advises gently guiding a kitten to its mother if it has not started suckling after about 30 minutes. Contact a veterinarian if a kitten is not feeding well or the mother seems unwell.
If nursing is not possible or a kitten is too weak to suckle, ask a veterinarian promptly for a feeding plan. VCA notes that kitten milk replacer and pet nursing bottles may be used when maternal nursing is unavailable. Bottle flow that is too fast can cause aspiration, pneumonia, or death, and a weak kitten may need veterinary help rather than attempted home feeding. Do not use cow’s milk. VCA says goat’s milk is too low in protein and fat for kittens; it is only an emergency stopgap until kitten milk replacer can be obtained.

7. Treat possible eclampsia as an emergency
VCA says feline eclampsia most often occurs when kittens are one to four weeks old, when the mother is producing the most milk. Signs can include lethargy, poor appetite, trembling, muscle spasms, pale gums, or difficulty breathing. If you suspect eclampsia, prevent the kittens from nursing and contact a veterinarian immediately; VCA describes the condition as a medical emergency.
Do not give calcium supplements or dairy to prevent it unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. Excessive calcium intake can increase risk, and supplementation needs to be veterinarian-directed.
8. Plan for weaning with the care team
VCA says weaning should begin around three to four weeks of age. The mother’s and kittens’ needs change during this transition, and the right pace can vary with the litter and their health. Coordinate the plan with the rescue organization or veterinarian rather than treating one age as a fixed schedule for every kitten.

9. Keep the veterinarian and rescue in the loop
Share meaningful changes in the mother’s appetite, strength, behavior, discharge, or ability to nurse, as well as concerns about any kitten’s feeding or condition. Keep the emergency number accessible and follow the care team’s directions about when to report progress or arrange an examination. General animal-welfare guidance can help you recognize concerns, but it cannot determine an individual cat’s health, due date, medication needs, or safest course of care.
