Do not assume outdoor kittens are abandoned. A mother cat may be nearby and waiting for people to leave. First assess the kittens, watch for the mother from a discreet distance, and contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinarian for a plan. The right response depends on the mother’s presence, each kitten’s age and health, and the support your local program can provide.
If the kittens are clean, plump, quiet, and appear comfortable, monitoring may be safer than removing them immediately. If they are injured, visibly ill, cold, persistently crying, or in immediate danger, seek animal-welfare or veterinary help without delay. Check for identification, an owner, and local found-animal reporting rules before taking them in.

I found kittens outside: what should I do first?
Observe before you move them
A mother cat can leave temporarily to find food or avoid people. ASPCA guidance recommends assessing the kittens and monitoring those who look clean, plump, and quiet. Watch from a location where the mother is unlikely to see you; a person standing close by can keep her away. The length and frequency of your checks should follow advice from a local shelter or rescue, because weather, traffic, predators, and the kittens’ condition change the risk.
Do not feed or handle kittens simply because you cannot see an adult cat. Instead, note their appearance, sounds, activity, and surroundings. Keep children and pets away while you observe. If the nesting spot is exposed to rain, extreme temperatures, vehicles, or other immediate hazards, call a local organization for instructions about a safe relocation.

When to intervene urgently
Contact a shelter, rescue, or veterinarian promptly if a kitten is injured, appears very weak or ill, is cold, or is in immediate danger. A mother may still be caring for a sick-looking litter, so professional advice is important before you separate them. Do not turn a general web guide into a substitute for an examination or local animal-welfare direction.
Check ownership and legal requirements
Before bringing kittens indoors, look for a collar, ear identification, microchip information, or a nearby owner. Local rules may require a found-animal report or a waiting period. A shelter or animal-control office can tell you what applies in your area and how to document where and when you found the litter.
Choose the care pathway, not a one-size-fits-all routine
Fostering is a care pathway rather than a single schedule. Use these questions to frame the decision with a shelter, rescue, or veterinarian:

How age changes feeding and daily care
Orphaned kittens under four weeks
Best Friends Animal Society guidance describes kittens under four weeks as needing warmth and bottle feeding. Seasonal guidance gives a broad feeding range of every two to four hours, while its foster manual notes that very young bottle babies may need feeds every two to three hours. These are program-level ranges, not a prescription for every litter. Age, weight, health, and the last successful feed determine the schedule, so obtain an individualized plan before you begin.
Use a kitten milk replacer formula and nursing bottle only when kittens are orphaned or cannot nurse successfully. A shelter or veterinarian should demonstrate the correct formula, amount, position, and nipple flow. Best Friends’ orphaned-kitten guidance also emphasizes warmth, suitable bottles and rubber nipples, and cleaning supplies. Keep a written log of each feed, urine or stool assistance, weight or other measurements requested by the program, and any change in behavior.
Very young kittens may need help eliminating because they cannot yet manage this independently. Follow the organization’s demonstrated technique and stop for help if a kitten will not eat, becomes weaker, or develops other concerning signs. Never improvise a formula or feeding schedule when professional instructions are available.

The included measuring cup and funnel make the process of mixing formula more precise and spill-free, making it the ideal assistant for pet owners and animal rescuers.
Beginning the weaning transition
Timing differs slightly among reputable guides. ASPCA nutrition guidance says orphaned or hand-fed kittens can generally begin weaning around three weeks, while Best Friends describes introducing gruel at about four weeks and gradually moving toward kitten food. The difference reflects an approximate developmental window, not a contradiction to resolve on your own. Let the shelter or veterinarian caring for your litter decide when to offer gruel, how to reduce milk replacer, and when a kitten is eating enough independently.

Provide shallow dishes that are easy to reach, fresh water when directed, and a clean area so you can tell what was actually consumed. Older kittens that eat independently
Kittens who reliably eat on their own usually need fewer meals than bottle babies. An ASPCA fostering article describes healthy independent eaters being fed three or four times a day, but the appropriate frequency depends on age, diet, body condition, and the program’s protocol. Provide a complete kitten diet, clean water, a suitable litter setup, play, rest, and daily observation. Report appetite, stool, energy, and respiratory or other health changes to the foster coordinator.
Set up a secure foster room before the kittens arrive
Use a quiet, escape-proof room that can be cleaned easily and separated from resident animals until the program says introductions are safe. The Best Friends foster manual lists examples of supplies; your organization may provide some items or require different ones.
- Secure sleeping space with towels or blankets that cannot trap a kitten.
- A safe heat source used according to the program’s instructions, with room for kittens to move away from it.
- Kitten food and, for orphaned bottle babies, kitten milk replacer formula, bottles, rubber nipples, and cleaning supplies.
- A low-sided litter box with non-clumping litter for kittens able to use one.
- Age-appropriate toys and a scratching post for mobile kittens.
- Cleaning materials, hand-washing access, and a way to keep feeding equipment sanitary.
- A carrier or secure transport container for appointments and emergency moves.
Ask specifically which heat source, bedding, litter, formula, and food are approved. Do not assume a product brand is required or endorsed. The relevant search category for bottle babies is kitten milk replacer formula; it is not needed when kittens are nursing successfully from their mother.

Fostering includes observation, socialization, and appointments
Build a simple daily record
Record feeds, appetite, elimination, medication instructions if prescribed, behavior, and any weight or growth checks requested by the care team. A consistent record helps a coordinator distinguish a normal transition from a developing problem and makes handoffs safer.

Socialize at the right stage
Fostering is more than feeding. You provide a calm environment and help kittens become comfortable with people through brief, positive handling, play, and predictable routines. Best Friends’ manual describes daily socialization for kittens between four and twelve weeks in its program guidance. Follow your organization’s plan for touch, noise, visitors, and interaction with other animals; a fearful or medically fragile kitten may need a slower approach.
Plan transport and veterinary care
Ask who schedules examinations, vaccinations, parasite treatment, testing, and follow-up, and whether you or a coordinator provides transport. Know the after-hours contact before an emergency occurs. Keep the carrier ready and bring your care log to every appointment.

Myth: “The kittens are alone, so I should take them immediately.”
Fact: The mother may be nearby or temporarily out of sight. Clean, plump, quiet kittens may be better off with her than separated from her. Observe discreetly, protect them from immediate hazards, and involve a local shelter or rescue in the decision.
Myth: “Every foster requires the same time commitment.”
Fact: A bottle baby may need feeding every few hours, including overnight, plus warmth and elimination assistance. A healthy kitten eating independently follows a different routine. Confirm the age, health status, and expected schedule before accepting a placement.
Myth: “Fostering always costs the caregiver money.”
Fact: Many programs cover some care supplies and toys, but coverage is local and specific. ASPCA guidance does not guarantee that every program pays every expense. Ask about formula, food, litter, equipment, veterinary bills, emergency care, and transport in writing before you agree.
Myth: “Fostering is only feeding.”
Fact: Safe housing, cleaning, observation, socialization, record-keeping, appointments, and transport are all part of the job. The organization may also need you to report changes quickly or return supplies after the placement.

Questions to ask a shelter or rescue before accepting kittens
- What is the estimated age of each kitten, and how was it determined?
- Is the mother being located, monitored, or reunited with the litter?
- What exact feeding, warmth, elimination, and socialization schedule should I follow?
- Which formula, bottles, food, litter, heat source, and cleaning supplies are approved?
- Who pays for supplies, examinations, medication, emergency treatment, and transport?
- Whom do I call after hours, and what symptoms require immediate veterinary care?
- How often should I report weight, appetite, stool, behavior, or other observations?
- What animals must be kept separate, and what sanitation steps prevent disease spread?
- How long is the expected placement, and who handles adoption or transfer?
A practical start-to-finish plan
- Assess the scene. Note the kittens’ condition, hazards, and whether an adult cat returns. Keep people and pets back.
- Contact local help. Call a shelter, rescue, animal-control office, or veterinarian for location-specific instructions and reporting requirements.
- Confirm the pathway. Decide with the organization whether monitoring with the mother, reunification, emergency treatment, or foster intake is appropriate.
- Prepare the room. Set up secure sleeping space, warmth, food or formula, litter, cleaning supplies, and transport equipment before moving kittens.
- Learn the routine. Have a coordinator demonstrate feeding, bottle position, elimination assistance, hygiene, and record-keeping when those tasks apply.
- Monitor and communicate. Follow the assigned schedule, log observations, and report changes rather than adjusting feeds or treatment independently.
- Support development. Add age-appropriate handling, play, and socialization while preserving rest and medical care.
- Complete the handoff. Keep the organization informed about progress and follow its process for adoption, transfer, or return.
Common problems and safer responses
The mother has not returned during your checks
Do not extend unsupervised waiting if weather, predators, traffic, or the kittens’ condition creates danger. Call the local organization again, describe exactly what you observed, and follow its instructions about temporary shelter, transport, or reunification.
A kitten refuses a feed or seems weaker
Contact the foster coordinator or veterinarian promptly. Have the feeding log, approximate age, last successful intake, temperature or warmth observations if requested, and any other changes ready. Do not force-feed or switch products without professional direction.
You cannot meet the schedule
Tell the program before accepting or as soon as circumstances change. Bottle babies require a reliable plan; the organization may arrange a substitute caregiver, split shifts, or a different placement. Returning a kitten through the program is safer than quietly reducing feeds.
You are unsure what the program supplies
Ask for a written checklist and confirm who owns the equipment. Programs differ in what they lend, reimburse, or expect fosters to provide. Clarifying this before intake prevents gaps in warmth, feeding, litter, or transport.
Bottom line for new foster caregivers
Start with observation and local guidance, not an automatic rescue. Keep a mother and healthy kittens together when it is safe, obtain urgent help for kittens who are cold, injured, or ill, and match the foster commitment to the kittens’ age and ability to eat. A well-supported foster home combines secure housing, age-specific nutrition, careful records, socialization, and dependable communication with the shelter, rescue, or veterinarian directing the case.
