Do not assume kittens are abandoned just because their mother is out of sight. If they look warm, clean and settled, watch from a safe distance for a few hours and contact a local shelter or rescue if you cannot keep an eye on them. If they are sick, injured, cold or clearly not thriving, call a veterinarian, shelter or rescue promptly and ask whether they can receive them.

First decide whether to intervene

If the kittens look well

A mother cat may be away finding food or waiting for people to leave. When the kittens are in a safe place and appear cared for, observe from a distance for a few hours rather than taking them away. The ASPCA’s found-kitten guidance recommends watching for the mother’s return. If you cannot monitor them, ask a local shelter or rescue for help deciding what to do.

If the spot is dangerous, move the kittens only to a nearby safer place their mother can still find. If she is present and caring for them, she is generally their best caregiver; avoid separating them unnecessarily. You can ask a rescue for advice about supporting the mother and litter.

If the kittens seem unwell or the mother does not return

Dirty, thin kittens that cry excessively may need intervention. Illness or injury calls for prompt professional help. Call a veterinarian, shelter or rescue before transporting the kittens to confirm they can receive them and to ask what to do while help is arranged.

Keep orphaned kittens warm before feeding

Kittens under four weeks are especially dependent on attentive care. Make a warm, dry nest and arrange a safe heat source so the kittens can move away from it if they become too warm. A chilled kitten should be warmed before feeding; do not feed while it is cold. Contact a veterinarian or rescue for advice, and ask whether an experienced foster caregiver is available. Alley Cat Allies’ neonatal kitten care guide covers basic warmth and feeding precautions.

Feed with kitten milk replacer and a safe position

When hand-feeding is necessary, use kitten milk replacer—not cow’s or goat’s milk. Ask a veterinarian which product and feeding plan suit the kitten, and follow the replacer’s own directions for amounts and preparation. A nursing bottle and nipples may be needed, but the appropriate feeding method depends on the kitten’s condition.

  • Hold the kitten belly-down, as it would nurse naturally. Never feed it on its back.
  • Keep the bottle positioned to limit air intake, and let the kitten suck rather than forcing liquid into its mouth.
  • Wash your hands before and after feeds and keep bottles clean.
  • A kitten too weak or ill to suck needs veterinary help. Do not attempt improvised tube feeding.

Example feeding intervals by age

Alley Cat Allies gives these general examples for bottle-feeding; they are not an individualized prescription. Follow the formula label and get veterinary guidance, especially if a kitten is unwell or its age is uncertain.

Kitten’s age Example interval in Alley Cat Allies’ guide
10 days or younger Every 2 hours, around the clock
11 days to 2½ weeks Every 3–4 hours
2½ to 4 weeks Every 5–6 hours

Help kittens eliminate after feeding

Kittens younger than four weeks need gentle stimulation after feeds to urinate and defecate. Use a warm, moist cotton ball, tissue or soft washcloth and gently rub around the anal area. If elimination is difficult, ask a veterinarian for advice rather than rubbing harder or waiting without guidance.

Wean gradually as the kitten develops

The ASPCA says weaning usually begins around four weeks and is generally complete between eight and ten weeks. An orphaned or hand-fed kitten may be ready to start around three weeks, but readiness depends on development. The ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance describes a gradual transition:

  1. Offer milk replacer in a shallow dish.
  2. Gradually introduce a soft gruel made from kitten food and replacer.
  3. As the kitten eats more food, reduce the replacer gradually.

Do not push a kitten’s nose into the dish: it could inhale liquid and develop lung problems. Around four weeks, a shallow litter pan with non-clumping litter can be introduced for litter training, as recommended by Alley Cat Allies. Supplies such as a nursing bottle, replacer, kitten food for weaning and a shallow pan are age-dependent—not every found litter needs them.
