The Litter-Robot 3 Connect is a discontinued, Wi-Fi-enabled automatic litter box that can still make sense for some cat owners buying used or maintaining a unit they already own. Its rotating globe sifts clumping litter into a waste drawer, but it still needs regular emptying and cleaning, a compatible 2.4 GHz network, and enough room for a bulky enclosure. Cat acceptance is not guaranteed. Whisker says the model is discontinued and points shoppers to newer products; it does not offer the LR3 as a current new purchase.
What the Litter-Robot 3 Connect does
The LR3 Connect uses a rotating globe to separate clumps from clean litter after a cat leaves, depositing waste in a drawer beneath the globe. It also connects to Whisker’s app for status and activity features. The system automates sifting, not every part of litter-box care: someone still has to empty the drawer, replenish litter, and clean the unit.

Whisker’s specification panel lists 15 V DC power, an empty weight of 24 lb, and a footprint of 24.25 by 27 inches. It lists the entryway as 10.25 by 15.25 inches. - Her smaller cat used the globe readily, while her larger cat was reluctant and seemed to find it confining.
- The app paired quickly, but did not consistently identify her other cat, which limited the usefulness of activity tracking in that household.
- She observed that hard-clumping clay litter formed firm clumps in her trials, while lightweight clay and some biodegradable litters stuck more to the liner. She also found that scatter escaped the small included mat and that the unit took up substantial floor space. These were her observations, not standardized performance measurements.
Used-unit buying considerations
Because Whisker lists the LR3 Connect as discontinued, a shopper should treat it as a used, refurbished, or residual-stock purchase rather than assume a new unit can be ordered from the manufacturer. Before buying an individual used unit, ask the seller to demonstrate a complete cycle and confirm the app connection, sensors, drawer, power supply, and globe are functioning. Check for damage, odors, missing components, and a clear return arrangement. These checks are prudent for any used mechanical appliance; they do not establish the condition or remaining life of a particular LR3.

Whisker says an existing WhiskerCare warranty remains active for one year from the product’s ship date, or three years if extended coverage was purchased. It also says it no longer offers extended warranties for LR3 units, while replacement parts remain available after warranty expiration. Warranty coverage is tied to the individual unit, so confirm the ship date and transferable coverage, and ask Whisker about current availability of any needed part before relying on it. Fit and cat acceptance
Compare the listed 24.25-by-27-inch footprint and 10.25-by-15.25-inch entryway with your available floor area and your cat’s size and habits. The entryway dimension does not by itself establish that every cat will feel comfortable inside the globe. If possible, observe your cat entering the unit before purchase or keep a workable alternative during the transition.

Wi-Fi requirements
Whisker says the connected unit requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and IPv4. It does not support 5 GHz, IPv6, or shared networks such as some apartment and college networks. If your router combines bands or your network is managed by a building, verify that you can connect a device on a compatible 2.4 GHz IPv4 network before counting on app features. Litter and transition
The manufacturer manual says, “The Litter-Robot litter sifting system requires clumping litter to work properly.” It recommends high-quality clay-clumping litter and advises against strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellet litter. For a gradual introduction, the manual recommends placing the unit where the old litter box stood, introducing it while powered off, and giving cats time to explore before starting cycles. The blue indicator flashes when the waste drawer needs emptying. The manual gives household examples—twice a week for two average-sized cats and once a week for one cat—but says the interval depends on the number and size of cats. Treat those as examples, not a fixed schedule for every home. The unit also requires occasional full cleaning; Crusta describes periodically disassembling and cleaning hers. Clumping litter is a continuing requirement, and a used unit may also need replacement parts or drawer liners over time. Verify that any part or liner you buy is explicitly compatible with the LR3 Connect; fit and availability should be checked for the specific item rather than assumed from a newer model.
How to compare it with a current automatic litter box
Do not choose on the automatic-cycle feature alone. Compare the costs and constraints that will affect everyday use, especially because the LR3 is discontinued and a used unit’s condition and warranty may vary.
