Why might southern right whales rest in shallow water?
A WA Parks and Wildlife spokesperson quoted by PerthNow said: “Southern right whales typically rest in shallow waters with their calves, before continuing their migration to Antarctica.” That was the department spokesperson’s explanation of the behavior; the article did not establish a more specific destination or timetable for these particular whales.
How close can people get to whales in WA?
PerthNow reported that WA Parks and Wildlife advised swimmers and boaters to keep 100 metres away from whales, and drones or remotely piloted aircraft to stay at least 60 metres away. The story quoted a spokesperson saying: “A vessel must not approach a whale within a distance of 100m, and within an arc of 60 degrees of the whale’s direction of travel or from behind.”

Guidance quoted in the 2025 report
- In the water: Do not approach closer than 100 metres.

- Near a whale showing distress: Abandon the interaction at any sign of distress or disturbance.
- With a drone or remotely piloted aircraft: Stay at least 60 metres away.

Consult current WA Parks and Wildlife guidance before using them as present-day legal advice. For shore-based viewing, binoculars can help you watch without approaching the animals.
What did the report say about the whales’ size?
