That notice does not confirm the two-metre description in the headline. It also should not be confused with a later, separate shark-risk episode associated with a whale carcass at City Beach.
Why do reports differ about whether Cottesloe was open?
In late September, a whale carcass washed ashore at City Beach and sharks were reported in the area. The carcass was removed on 1 October, but beach closures and reports of risk continued to change.

- 3 October 2026: ABC News reported City, Floreat and Swanbourne beaches closed, while Cottesloe beaches were open at the time. The local ocean-swimming group PodSquad had paused its daily swim.
These are dated reports, not a live status feed. Check the Town of Cottesloe’s beach conditions page, which links to Coastal Watch, and SharkSmart WA for current information before heading to the water. ABC reported that the Town typically installs its shark barrier ahead of summer, around the end of October; seasonal timing does not establish whether it is installed now.
What should beachgoers do during a shark closure?
The Town’s instruction is direct: “When beaches are closed due to shark sighting or incident, please abide by signage and do not enter the water.” Its rangers patrol beaches and may close them after a shark sighting or another hazard that could endanger the public. SharkSmart WA’s Cottesloe alert says reports made to Water Police are shared with land managers, relevant authorities and the public through SharkSmart channels. What shark-warning systems and barriers are at Cottesloe?
The Town identifies two Spectur Shark Warning Systems: one at the Cove surf break and another at North Cottesloe. It describes these as part of a broader response that also includes BEN signs, beach patrols and a protected swimming enclosure. The Town says its swimming enclosure is a flexible nylon barrier extending 170 metres north from the groyne and 140 metres offshore. The Town’s enclosure information describes seasonal installation as usually beginning around late October, with removal around late April.
