For a ready-to-teach, no-cost polar bear study, start with Polar Bears International’s Paws Up for Polar Bears. The official curriculum page provides separate downloadable plans for grades 3, 4 and 5, and says teachers may teach the lessons together as a unit or individually. The sequence connects polar bear ecology with Arctic habitat, changing sea ice, climate impacts, problem solving and stewardship while identifying links to NGSS and Common Core State Standards.

Use WWF’s Polar Bears and Climate Change toolkit alongside it when you want more climate-focused activities, printables, multimedia and cross-curricular options for grades 3–5. Both resources are free; the main planning decision is whether you need a coherent grade-specific unit or a menu of activities to supplement one.

What students study in the Paws Up unit

Polar Bears International describes the unit’s focus as polar bear ecology, the Arctic, and the impacts of climate change on habitats and natural processes. That scope lets you teach the animal as part of a system rather than as an isolated species.

Ecology and adaptations

Students investigate how a polar bear’s body, behavior and food needs relate to its environment. The lessons provide a context for asking what an adaptation does, what resources an animal needs and how a change in one part of an ecosystem affects another.

Arctic habitat and sea ice

The Arctic is presented as a habitat with physical conditions that shape movement, feeding and survival. Changing sea ice gives students a concrete way to discuss habitat change and the relationship between natural processes and living things.

Climate impacts, problem solving and stewardship

The unit addresses climate impacts as an ecological and human problem. Students can examine causes and effects, consider possible responses and practice stewardship. The curriculum page describes this educational approach; it does not itself establish a particular population, temperature or sea-ice statistic, so do not present a number as a finding of the unit unless you verify it in the original scientific source.

Standards connections

Polar Bears International states that Paws Up incorporates Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Check the grade-level plan for the exact performance expectations and literacy connections before writing them into a formal standards map.

How to download and organize the grade-level plan

  1. Open the official Polar Bears International education curriculum page and select the Paws Up for Polar Bears plan for grade 3, 4 or 5.
  2. Download the grade-level document and save it with the grade and school year in the filename. Keep the original file unchanged so you can return to the publisher’s directions.
  3. Read the full plan once before teaching. Mark the lessons you will teach as a sequence and those you will use as stand-alone activities.
  4. List the required printouts, student materials, discussion prompts and any technology referenced in the plan. Prepare copies before the first lesson.
  5. Decide what students will produce as evidence of learning: a labeled model, notebook explanation, data interpretation, argument, journal entry or presentation.
  6. Schedule a short launch about the Arctic, then reserve time for students to explain relationships among habitat, polar bears and human choices.

The publisher says lessons may be used together or individually. A full sequence gives students continuity; an individual lesson works when you are adding a polar-bear example to an existing ecology, climate or habitat unit.

WWF’s free toolkit: activities to add variety

WWF’s Polar Bears and Climate Change resource is intended for grades 3–5. It combines an educator guide and classroom presentation with downloadable activities, printables and multimedia. Its activities cover science, social studies, language arts, physical education and arts and crafts, depending on the selection.

Climate Trackers

Students observe patterns and create climate timelines. Use this as a data-literacy extension: ask learners to distinguish an observation from an explanation, label the time period represented and identify what additional evidence would strengthen a conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My Day on Patrol

Students write a journal entry from an imagined role with a polar bear patrol team. Before writing, establish what the role involves in the activity instructions; then have students separate factual details from creative choices. The exercise supports point of view, descriptive writing and discussion of how communities respond to human–polar bear encounters.

What’s the Connection?

This activity models cause and effect between daily energy use and polar bears’ future. Have students map each link rather than jumping from an individual action directly to a global conclusion. That makes room for questions about systems, scale and collective choices.

Arctic Defense Team

Students collaborate on an argument about Arctic drilling. Assign or let teams research the positions specified by the toolkit, require evidence for each claim and use a structured discussion so that disagreement remains focused on reasons and consequences.

Polar Bear Freeze

This movement game helps students understand the challenges of catching food and surviving. Set clear boundaries, explain the stop-and-start rules and provide a low-impact alternative for students who cannot run. Debrief immediately: the learning comes from connecting the game’s constraints to the ecological challenge, not from competition alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paw to Paw

Students make plaster handprint models and compare them with polar bear paw prints to explore adaptations. This is the clearest activity in the toolkit that calls for an optional physical supply: plaster of Paris or another plaster-casting material. No particular brand or kit is required. Prepare a washable work area, follow the material’s safety directions, prevent dry plaster from entering sinks and allow models to cure fully before handling.

A practical teaching sequence using both resources

Lesson 1: Build Arctic background

Use the opening material from Paws Up to establish the Arctic setting and the idea of habitat. Ask students to create a vocabulary chart for terms such as habitat, adaptation, sea ice, ecosystem and stewardship. Avoid introducing unsupported statistics; focus on relationships students can observe in diagrams, images or the lesson materials.

Lesson 2: Connect adaptations to survival

Teach the adaptation content from the grade-level plan. Add WWF’s Paw to Paw if a hands-on model suits your class. Students should explain what a paw feature might help a bear do, then identify the limits of a model: a plaster print represents shape and size, not every function of a living paw.

Lesson 3: Model change and cause and effect

Use a Paws Up lesson about habitat or natural processes, followed by WWF’s What’s the Connection? or Climate Trackers. Require students to show intermediate steps in a cause-and-effect chain and to label observations separately from inferences.

Lesson 4: Apply learning through communication

Choose My Day on Patrol for narrative writing or Arctic Defense Team for argument and civic reasoning. Provide a checklist that requires an accurate Arctic setting, a clear claim or viewpoint, evidence from class materials and an explanation of consequences.

Lesson 5: Synthesize and act

Return to the stewardship goal in Paws Up. Students can present a habitat-protection proposal, explain one relationship in the Arctic system or create a class display that distinguishes individual actions from broader policy and community decisions.

Extensions for math, data and geography

Polar Bears International lists further units and lessons for teachers who want to go beyond the core sequence. The integrated polar bear STEM material includes movement geometry, energy and unit conversion, sea-ice data trends and estimating population through probability. Other listings include Arctic geography, a polar bear tracker and a mother-and-cubs unit.

  • Movement geometry: use paths, angles or distances to represent animal movement, then state what assumptions the model makes.
  • Energy and unit conversion: practice converting units in an Arctic or animal-energy context; show the original and converted units so students can check reasonableness.
  • Sea-ice data trends: have students describe the pattern shown in the lesson data before discussing possible causes. A trend in classroom data is not, by itself, proof of every climate claim.
  • Population estimation through probability: make students distinguish an estimate from a census and identify the sample or assumptions used.
  • Arctic geography: map the region, label relevant physical features and explain why geography matters to habitat.

Assessment ideas that match the lessons

  • Concept map: students connect polar bears, sea ice, food, habitat and human choices, adding a short explanation to each arrow.
  • Evidence-based paragraph: students answer how a habitat change can affect a polar bear and cite two class observations or data points.
  • Model explanation: students present the Paw to Paw print and explain what it represents and what it cannot show.
  • Argument rubric: score the Arctic Defense Team task for claim, evidence, reasoning, acknowledgment of another view and clarity.
  • Reflection: ask students to identify one idea that changed during the unit and the evidence that caused the change.

Assess the reasoning, not whether students repeat a particular climate statistic. The official education pages establish the curriculum’s scope and activities, but they are not substitutes for the scientific sources behind numerical claims.

Materials, preparation and classroom cautions

The core downloads are free. Most activities rely on ordinary classroom supplies and printed pages. The optional exception specifically evidenced in the toolkit is plaster or plaster-casting material for Paw to Paw. Because plaster can irritate skin and should not be washed into plumbing, follow the product directions, supervise mixing and clean tools according to local safety rules.

For movement activities, clear the floor, define boundaries and offer an accessible participation option. For multimedia, preview every clip and provide captions or an alternative description. For sensitive climate discussions, distinguish what the lesson asks students to model from what a scientific study has measured.

What these resources do—and do not—provide

They provide free, classroom-ready educational frameworks for grades 3–5, with lessons, presentations, printables and activity ideas. They do not guarantee that every linked PDF is available in every location, and availability can change on the publishers’ websites. Download the files you need ahead of class and retain the source attribution in your planning records.

Neither curriculum page supplies a single dated population, sea-ice or climate statistic that should be treated as the article’s key figure. If students need current numbers, obtain them from the original scientific or government source and teach the date, region, method and uncertainty with the number.
