Which beaches were closed, and when?

SharkSmart’s official alert, also issued on 24 September, said a school of bull sharks had been reported near Fremantle Bridge multiple times over the previous three days. The two sources establish a temporary closure in response to reports at that time, not the present status of each beach.

The sources cited here do not verify whether Crab Bay, Pier 21 Marina, or other affected river beaches remain closed on 4 October 2026. The City’s 2025 “until further notice” wording is not a current-status update. What was reported about the sharks?
PerthNow reported that video taken near the North Fremantle traffic bridge on Tuesday morning showed six bull sharks. The article also recounted reports of multiple sharks about two metres long roughly 10 metres offshore near the Rottnest Express ferry terminal, and a separate report of sharks estimated at 1.5 metres near the bridge. A further group sighting was reported there on Wednesday afternoon.
Those sizes and counts are descriptions of reported observations, not measured biological data or an estimate of how many sharks live in the river. SharkSmart independently confirmed repeated reports near Fremantle Bridge; it did not identify the animals in those reports as tagged sharks.

What should river users do if they see a shark?
- Check SharkSmart’s current website or app alerts before using the river.
- Do not enter a closed area; comply with closures advised by local government rangers or Parks and Wildlife Service officers.
- Report a sighting to Water Police on 9442 8600, the number given in SharkSmart’s 24 September 2025 warning.
SharkSmart’s 3 October 2025 update said DPIRD was continuing to monitor the situation and repeated the advice to follow local closures. Because warnings and closures can change, a dated article or an older alert should not replace the latest official notice.

How were authorities monitoring the area?
PerthNow reported that the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) was monitoring the situation and planned to deploy a research boat. A DPIRD spokesperson told the outlet that receivers at East Fremantle, Blackwall Reach and near Canning Bridge provide near-real-time notifications of tagged shark activity.

Receiver detections are not the same as public sightings: the system reports activity from tagged animals, while a reported shark may be untagged or not yet confirmed. A later SharkSmart warning dated 24 February 2026 reported multiple detections of a tagged bull shark over three days at the East Fremantle and Blackwall Reach receivers. That warning advised extra caution in the lower Swan River from Melville Waters to Fremantle; it did not update the status of the 2025 closure locations.
Why did the location alarm local residents?
Stella Berry died after a bull shark bite while swimming near the North Fremantle traffic bridge on 4 February 2023. The September 2025 report said the nearby sightings recalled her death among residents. The proximity explains the community concern, but it does not show that the sharks sighted in 2025 were the same animal or that an attack was imminent.

What local safety measures are in place?
The City describes wider safety measures for Fremantle river users, including warning infrastructure and patrols, as well as a study of protected swimming areas. Its North Fremantle BEN-sign notice says seven signs were installed along the river between Crab Bay and Rocky Bay. These signs give coded locations for emergency response and can display “Beach Closed” messages. They are general local safety infrastructure, not evidence that a particular beach is currently closed or that the signs were installed in response to the September 2025 sightings.
