On 21 April 2025, spearfisher Jasmine Warneford was pulled backward underwater when a shark took a fish attached to the float line around her waist, according to a PerthNow report. Warneford cut the line with her knife, and the report says she and fellow diver Sam Anderson escaped unharmed. The footage was captured on Warneford’s GoPro, but the reported distance and shark identification have not been independently confirmed in the official pages reviewed.
What happened off Red Bluff near Kalbarri?
PerthNow reported that Warneford and Anderson were spearfishing off Red Bluff near Kalbarri on 21 April 2025. They had met at the campsite days earlier, and this was their second dive together. The report says they had been in the water for around five hours when the shark approached.

According to the report, the shark took a fish and then turned toward Anderson, appearing in the footage to try to bite him. The article identifies it as a tiger shark, but the reviewed material does not document a formal species examination or official confirmation.
Why was Warneford pulled underwater?
A float line connected Warneford to a fish at its far end, and the line was around her waist. PerthNow says the shark swam away while pulling at the fish, tightening the connected line and dragging Warneford backward. The reported distance is about 10 metres; it is the news report’s figure, not an independently verified measurement.

Warneford told PerthNow: “The float line was connected around my waist as the shark was pulling away the fish . . . it pulled really hard around my waist, my whole body flipped around and it was kind of dragging me backwards, so I kind of had to let myself go and relax.”
How did she get free, and was anyone hurt?
Anderson swam toward Warneford as she was being pulled, according to PerthNow. She used a knife from her weight belt to cut the float line. The report says both divers escaped unharmed and continued spearfishing, taking two more fish home.

Warneford described the shark’s apparent motivation as her interpretation, not a verified finding about its intent: “The shark definitely just wanted the fish, it didn’t want us,” she told PerthNow.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
The detailed account of the encounter comes from PerthNow’s 29 April 2025 report, which attributes the sequence to the participants and footage. The official SharkSmart pages reviewed do not establish whether an authority investigated this specific event, confirmed the species, measured the distance, or issued a warning about it. It is therefore more precise to describe this as a reported close shark encounter, rather than an officially adjudicated shark attack.

SharkSmart’s Kalbarri notice dated 18 July 2024 concerned a separate situation: an injured whale reported at Jakes Corner that had attracted sharks. It recommended extra caution, checking activity and observing local closures; it was not a notice prompted by the April 2025 encounter. For current local alerts, check the SharkSmart website rather than relying on an old notice. The government service page describes recent sightings and tagged detections, but it was last updated in 2017, so its listed features should not be assumed to reflect the current service.
