Fun things to do with your cat can be as simple as a prey-like wand game, a food search, a cardboard box, or a secure spot by the window. For variety, try these 21 ideas at your cat’s pace: some work indoors, while the outdoor options use controlled access rather than free roaming. Cats differ in confidence, age, mobility, and preferences, so let yours opt in and stop if they seem distressed or lose interest.

What are fun things I can do with my cat indoors?

Indoor activities are most engaging when they give cats safe ways to chase, pounce, search, climb, scratch, and explore. The AAFP and ISFM environmental-needs guidelines describe play and food puzzles as ways to engage these behaviors; the ASPCA also suggests exploration, training, and window watching. Mix active games with quieter options and let your cat choose.

1. Play a wand-toy hunt

Move a wand toy like prey, skimming it along the floor or briefly lifting it through the air. Let your cat catch it to complete the play sequence. Keep the toy moving away from the cat rather than teasing with it just out of reach.

2. Change the wand toy’s route

For a fresh version of the hunt, draw the toy around a chair leg, behind a box, or across open floor. Varying where it appears gives your cat a chance to stalk and pounce without requiring a new toy.

How can I safely take my cat outside?

The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ 2024 indoor/outdoor lifestyle position statement says, “Safety is the primary concern when letting cats outdoors.” It identifies harness-and-leash walks, outdoor enclosures, and cat-safe fences as controlled-access options, while noting that outdoor access carries risks. These approaches are not risk-free: choose based on your cat’s temperament and the actual security of the setup, and never force a reluctant cat outside.

19. Explore with a harness and leash

If your cat tolerates gradual harness training, try a short, supervised visit in a calm, controlled area. Let your cat set the pace; do not pull, drag, or carry a frightened cat into an outdoor outing. A harness does not remove outdoor risks.

20. Spend time in a secure outdoor enclosure

A catio or other properly built outdoor enclosure can provide sights and smells while limiting exposure compared with free roaming. Check that the structure is suitable and secure, and supervise your cat during visits.

21. Use a cat-safe fenced area

A securely designed fenced area can offer controlled outdoor time, but a fence should not be assumed to prevent every escape. Check the whole boundary and supervise your cat; suitability depends on the setup and the individual cat.

How do you keep these activities safe and rewarding?

  • Let your cat opt in. If they stop engaging or seem distressed, end the activity and try something different another time.
  • Do not use hands or feet as toys. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines recommend using toys instead.
  • Put away string toys and toys with potentially ingestible parts after play. Avoid small parts when a cat will have unsupervised access.
  • Keep food games within the daily food allowance. The ASPCA says treats should make up 5% or less of a cat’s daily food intake; this guidance concerns treats, not a new feeding prescription. See the ASPCA’s cat nutrition tips.
  • Adapt height, activity length, and access to your cat’s age, mobility, and confidence. Indoor cats still need chances to play, forage, rest, and use vertical territory, according to the AAFP’s 2024 position statement.
  • For cats allowed outdoors, the ASPCA recommends a safety collar and ID tag; both a tag and a microchip can help a lost cat return home. See ASPCA general cat care.
  • If your cat develops a new or concerning behavior change, seek veterinary guidance. The AAFP and ISFM environmental-needs guidelines note that behavior changes can sometimes be related to an underlying medical problem.

For more guidance on play and environmental needs, see the AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines. The ASPCA also shares at-home tips for keeping pets busy and engaged.
