Can Cats Safely Eat Raw Meat? Risks, Nutrition and What to Feed Instead

Raw meat can expose cats and people to pathogens, and plain meat is not necessarily nutritionally complete. Learn what to feed instead and when to seek veterinary advice.

No—raw meat is not recommended as a regular food or treat for cats. It can carry disease-causing organisms that may infect cats and people, and plain meat does not establish that a cat is getting a complete, balanced diet. Veterinary and public-health guidance favors nutritionally complete food suited to the cat’s life stage.

Why raw meat is not recommended for cats

The concern is not that meat has no nutritional value. It is that uncooked meat can carry bacteria, viruses and parasites, while a piece of meat alone is not formulated to provide the full balance of nutrients and calories a cat needs. Cornell’s Feline Health Center does not recommend raw or gently cooked diets, citing infection risks and a lack of established scientific evidence for claimed benefits. Cornell’s nutrition guidance also explains how to assess food for nutritional adequacy.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) discourages feeding cats and dogs raw or undercooked animal-sourced proteins because contaminated food can cause illness in animals and create risks for people. An animal that appears healthy may still carry organisms that can expose other animals or household members. The risk is especially important where young, elderly, pregnant or immunocompromised people live. Read the AVMA policy on raw or undercooked animal-source protein.

What can contaminate raw pet food?

The AVMA identifies potential hazards that include Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), among others. These are food-safety concerns for both the cat eating the food and people handling it or encountering contamination in the home.

FDA research provides a historical example, not a current estimate of how often raw cat food is contaminated. In a Center for Veterinary Medicine study conducted from October 2010 through July 2012, 15 of 196 raw pet-food samples tested positive for Salmonella and 32 of 196 tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The study screened over 1,000 pet-food samples overall; the 196 raw samples were part of the second year of the study. These results describe only the tested samples and should not be read as present-day prevalence across all raw pet food. FDA’s account of the pet-food study quotes study investigator Renate Reimschuessel describing a potential health risk for pets eating raw food and owners handling it.

H5N1 makes uncooked animal products an additional concern

FDA says cats are particularly sensitive to H5N1 and describes investigations indicating that transmission can occur through food, most often uncooked meat or unpasteurized milk. Heat treatment can inactivate H5N1 in meat, milk and egg products. This is another reason not to assume that raw animal products are safe for a cat. FDA’s H5N1 information for animal owners provides further context.

How to choose a safer, nutritionally suitable food

Look for a commercial cat food whose label states that it is complete and balanced, and confirm that the nutritional adequacy statement covers your cat’s life stage. Cornell explains that these statements are used to indicate nutritional adequacy. A food designed for one life stage may not be the right choice for another, so check the label rather than assuming that any cat food meets every cat’s needs.

Once nutritional adequacy and life stage are addressed, dry, semi-moist and canned foods differ in moisture, storage and palatability. The appropriate option depends on the individual cat and, where relevant, its medical needs. Ask your veterinarian for guidance if your cat has a health condition or dietary restriction.

Do not treat a home-prepared meat diet as balanced by default. Cornell notes that home-prepared diets can contain incorrect amounts and proportions of nutrients. If a medical need calls for a home-formulated diet, work with a veterinarian; consult one before adding supplements, too.

If you handle raw pet food

FDA’s primary prevention advice is not to feed a raw diet. If raw pet food is already being handled in your home, these steps can reduce opportunities for exposure, but they do not make raw feeding risk-free. FDA’s pet-food handling guidance recommends:

When to contact a veterinarian after possible H5N1 exposure

If a cat may have been exposed to H5N1 and develops concerning signs, contact a veterinarian. FDA lists fever, lethargy, low appetite, eye inflammation or redness, eye or nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, and neurological signs—including tremors, seizures, incoordination or blindness—as signs warranting veterinary care. See FDA’s H5N1 guidance for additional information.
