Benefits depend on the ingredient, dose, formulation, product quality, species, and the animal’s medical situation. For a healthy dog or cat eating a complete and balanced diet, treats are optional rewards—not a substitute for nutrition or veterinary care.
What “functional” means in a pet treat
“Functional” describes an intended purpose beyond rewarding an animal. A treat may be marketed for digestive support, joint comfort, skin and coat care, calming, dental care, or another goal. That label describes what the maker intends the product to do; it does not establish that the product delivers an effective dose or produces a measurable health outcome.

Evidence has to be assessed at the level of the specific ingredient and product. The same ingredient can have different effects depending on its chemical form, concentration, stability, manufacturing quality, and how it is fed. A promising ingredient in a laboratory or veterinary study does not automatically make every biscuit, chew, or soft treat containing it effective.

Extra calories can contribute to weight gain, while large amounts of supplemental nutrients can upset dietary balance.

Do functional treats actually improve a pet’s health?
Sometimes a carefully selected product can help provide an ingredient that a veterinarian has decided is appropriate. However, the evidence is uneven, and a treat format itself does not guarantee benefit. A healthy animal already eating an appropriate complete and balanced food generally does not need additional supplements, according to AAFCO. Extra nutrients can be harmful when they are unnecessary or excessive.
The strongest practical case for a functional treat is convenience: a pet may accept an ingredient more readily when it is incorporated into a reward. Convenience is not the same as efficacy. Before buying one, ask:
- What exact health purpose is claimed?
- What ingredient is intended to provide that benefit?
- How much of that ingredient is supplied per treat or daily serving?
- Is there evidence for that ingredient in this species and condition?
- How many calories does the serving add?
- Could it interact with a disease, medication, or another supplement?
For a pet with chronic disease, a restricted diet, pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or multiple medications, a veterinarian should decide whether an additional ingredient is appropriate.
Evidence by ingredient
Probiotics: potentially useful, but product-specific
Probiotics are live microorganisms intended to influence the gastrointestinal tract. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine discusses their use in dogs with diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset, while emphasizing that products must be evaluated individually. A probiotic treat may be a way to disguise a capsule or make administration easier, but the treat format does not prove that the organisms remain alive at the stated amount or that they will help every dog.
A useful label should identify the exact microorganism species or strain, the number of organisms supplied, and a guarantee for viable organisms through the product’s shelf life. Cornell also recommends looking for evidence that the specific product has been studied for efficacy rather than assuming that all probiotics work alike.

Safety matters. Cornell urges particular caution with severely immunocompromised dogs, for whom probiotics should be used only with veterinary supervision. A dog with ongoing vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, fever, or marked lethargy needs veterinary assessment rather than a treat-based experiment.
Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil: comparatively stronger joint support evidence
Fish-oil omega-3 fatty acids, especially the EPA and DHA components, have comparatively stronger support for joint-related use than many other supplement ingredients discussed by Cornell. Even so, the expected effect depends on dose, product quality, and the individual animal. A veterinarian should determine whether an omega-3 product fits the pet’s condition and current diet.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fish oil is calorie-dense, so Cornell warns that it may be a poor choice for an overweight dog unless the added calories are accounted for. Supplements can also be overdosed. A treat containing fish oil therefore should be assessed as part of the entire daily intake, not as a harmless extra.
VCA’s arthritis nutrition guidance also discusses EPA and DHA alongside physical rehabilitation. That does not mean an omega-3 treat reverses arthritis or replaces weight management, exercise planning, pain control, or other prescribed care.
Glucosamine and chondroitin: common claims, unsettled results
Glucosamine and chondroitin are widely marketed for joint support. Their presence on a label is not proof that they protect cartilage, slow arthritis, or relieve pain. Cornell describes few joint-supplement ingredients beyond fish oil as definitively proven to slow joint degeneration and presents glucosamine and chondroitin as possible supports. VCA, in contrast, reports that controlled studies have failed to show a benefit from glucosamine in dogs or cats with osteoarthritis.

These statements are not identical, so the responsible conclusion is uncertainty. Do not treat a glucosamine-containing chew as a proven arthritis therapy, and do not delay a veterinary examination for stiffness, lameness, difficulty rising, or reduced activity. If a veterinarian recommends a trial, establish what improvement would count as meaningful and when the trial should be stopped.
Other “functional” ingredients
Marketing may highlight herbs, vitamins, minerals, fiber, or other compounds for skin, calming, immunity, or digestion. No universal benefit has been established for those categories. Evaluate each ingredient by its accepted regulatory status, amount, evidence in the relevant species, and safety margin. A long ingredient list can create an appearance of sophistication without showing that any component is present at an effective level.
How to read a functional-treat label
In the United States, FDA labeling guidance requires an animal-food label to identify the product, state net quantity, name the manufacturer or distributor, and list ingredients. Ingredients are listed by common or usual name in descending order by weight. This ordering tells you which ingredients are present in greater amounts by weight; it does not tell you that the first ingredient is responsible for a claimed medical effect.
Look for a guaranteed amount of the ingredient that matters. “Contains probiotics” is less informative than a named microorganism with a stated viable count and a shelf-life guarantee. “With omega-3s” is less useful than a declared amount of relevant fatty acids. If the amount is not stated, you cannot determine whether the treat can plausibly supply the quantity used in a study or recommended by a veterinarian.
Check the species and life-stage instructions. A product intended for dogs should not automatically be given to a cat, and a treat suitable for an adult animal may not fit a growing, pregnant, or nursing pet. AAFCO notes that ingredients may have species or quantity restrictions and must have an accepted basis such as an AAFCO ingredient definition, formal FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine review, or self-affirmed generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status.

Also inspect the feeding directions and calorie information. AAFCO notes that products labeled as snacks or treats are generally exempt from nutritional-adequacy requirements. Therefore, attractive marketing language does not mean the product is complete and balanced. Treats should fit within the animal’s overall diet and daily calorie allowance.
Medical claims are a regulatory warning sign
FDA explains that expressed or implied claims to diagnose, treat, prevent, or mitigate disease can indicate that a product is intended for use as a new animal drug. Such products would require approval through the drug-approval process rather than being marketed merely as ordinary food.
Be cautious when a treat promises to cure arthritis, prevent infection, eliminate allergies, or replace prescribed therapy. A lawful food label can describe ingredients and general nutritional purposes, but disease-treatment language raises a different regulatory question. Ask a veterinarian about a product that makes a strong medical promise, especially if the animal already has a diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical method for choosing a functional treat
- Define the goal. Write down the problem you are trying to address—such as rewarding training, hiding medication, supporting a veterinarian-managed gastrointestinal plan, or adding a joint ingredient. If there is no specific goal, a simple low-calorie treat may be more appropriate than a supplement product.
- Confirm the diagnosis and treatment plan. Pain, diarrhea, itching, weight change, and lethargy can have many causes. A functional treat should not substitute for examination or prescribed treatment.
- Match the evidence to the ingredient. For probiotics, look for the exact organism, viable count, shelf-life guarantee, and product-specific studies. For joint support, recognize the relatively stronger discussion around EPA/DHA and the uncertainty surrounding glucosamine and chondroitin.
- Verify the amount. Find the amount per treat and the recommended daily serving. If the key amount is absent, you cannot judge whether the product supplies a meaningful dose.
- Check species, life stage, calories, and restrictions. Read the complete label, not only the front panel. Include treat calories in the daily ration and account for other supplements or fortified foods.
- Review interactions and contraindications. Ask the veterinarian before use for an immunocompromised animal, a pet with kidney, liver, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, or endocrine disease, or an animal taking medication.
- Monitor and reassess. Introduce one new product at a time, follow the label, and record stool quality, appetite, weight, mobility, or other relevant signs. Stop and seek advice if adverse signs occur or the intended improvement does not appear.
Dog and cat guidance is not interchangeable
The most detailed ingredient guidance summarized here is dog-focused, particularly Cornell’s discussion of probiotics and joint supplements. Cats should not be assumed to respond in the same way. Their nutritional requirements, tolerance of ingredients, body size, and disease patterns differ, and many dog treats are not formulated or labeled for cats.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming an ingredient name proves effectiveness
An ingredient can appear in a product at an amount too small to matter, in a form that has not been studied, or without adequate stability. Require an amount and relevant evidence rather than relying on the ingredient name.
Replacing a balanced diet with treats
Because treats are generally reward products and may be exempt from nutritional-adequacy requirements, feeding many of them can displace essential nutrients or add excess calories. Keep the main diet complete and balanced unless a veterinarian prescribes otherwise.
Stacking multiple supplements
Combining a fortified food, a supplement powder, a joint chew, and functional treats can push nutrient intake higher than intended. AAFCO warns that healthy dogs and cats generally do not need extra supplements and that excess nutrients can be harmful. Give the veterinarian a complete list of everything the pet eats.
Trusting a disease promise
Claims to treat or prevent disease are not ordinary evidence of effectiveness; they are also a regulatory warning sign. Use veterinary care for diagnosis and treatment, and treat marketing claims as claims to verify rather than facts.
Ignoring calories in oil-based treats
Fish oil and other oils provide concentrated calories. Cornell specifically cautions that fish oil may not suit overweight dogs unless its energy contribution is considered. The same principle applies to any calorie-dense chew or paste.
When veterinary advice is essential
- The pet has a diagnosed disease, is taking medication, or is on a prescription or elimination diet.
- The animal is severely immunocompromised, very young, pregnant, nursing, or elderly and medically fragile.
- You are considering a probiotic for persistent gastrointestinal signs or a joint product for lameness or pain.
- The product makes a claim to treat, prevent, or cure disease.
- The label does not state the amount of the key ingredient, species suitability, calories, or clear feeding directions.
- The pet develops vomiting, diarrhea, itching, swelling, lethargy, appetite loss, or worsening mobility after starting the treat.
What a well-chosen functional treat can—and cannot—do
A functional treat can make administration easier, provide a measured ingredient selected for a particular purpose, and serve as a controlled reward. It cannot by itself establish a diagnosis, guarantee a therapeutic dose, replace a complete diet, or substitute for veterinary treatment. The most defensible approach is to judge the product by transparent labeling, ingredient-specific evidence, calorie contribution, species suitability, and the pet’s individual risks.
