Galaxy: The Healing Powers of a Rescue Dog is a true-story book about a rescued dog whose recovery leads to relationships with people facing pain, fear and loneliness. Written by Jen Wilson and Judy Katz, it follows Galaxy’s adjustment to family life and her later work as a pet therapy dog. The publisher’s synopsis and a review from Best Friends Animal Society frame those encounters as personal stories, not proof of clinical treatment outcomes.

What is Galaxy: The Healing Powers of a Rescue Dog about?

Lyons Press describes the book as a true story about the Wilson family’s decision to adopt a dog. They visit a shelter expecting to choose a small, cute dog, but connect with Galaxy, a calm dog with a history of serious abuse and injury. The narrative follows Galaxy’s adjustment to family life and the relationships she later forms with people coping with physical or emotional pain, according to the publisher’s book description.

The publisher highlights a veteran returning from Afghanistan with severe injuries, a teenager afraid of dogs after an attack, and an elderly man facing loneliness. These are the synopsis’s descriptions of people in the book; they should be understood as narrative accounts rather than independently verified therapeutic outcomes.

How does Galaxy become a pet therapy dog?

In a review published June 24, 2026, Sally Rosenthal of Best Friends Animal Society says Jen Wilson worked with an animal behavior expert to help Galaxy become comfortable with people and later had her certified as a pet therapy dog. Rosenthal recounts visits with a veteran, a nursing-home resident, and a young woman working through a fear of dogs with her doctor and Galaxy. These details are Rosenthal’s account of the book, not a clinical evaluation of its effects.

Rosenthal brings relevant personal context to her response: she writes that she and her late husband were part of a pet therapy team at a hospice facility with their Labradors. She says, “My late husband and I were members of a pet therapy team in a hospice facility with our Labradors many years ago, and Jen’s book resonates with me in many ways.” That experience helps explain her connection to the subject; it does not establish a general measure of pet therapy’s effectiveness. What does the book establish—and what does it not?

The available publisher description and review present a story about Galaxy’s recovery, training and interactions with people in difficult circumstances. They do not provide quantified outcomes or evidence that the encounters treat injuries, fear, loneliness or other health conditions. Readers looking for documented clinical evidence should distinguish the book’s moving individual stories from research evaluating therapy-animal programs.
