Garlic for Warts in Dogs and Cats: What Pet Owners Should Know

The garlic wart results often cited online come from a secondary account of a human study. They do not establish that garlic treats or is safe to apply to dog or cat growths.

No evidence here shows that garlic treats warts in dogs or cats, or that applying it to a pet’s growth is safe. The study often cited in support of garlic involved people, not animals. A wart-like bump may also be something other than a papilloma, so ask a veterinarian to assess an uncertain or changing growth rather than trying a human remedy.

What did the garlic wart study report?

A September 7, 2026 article by Veterinary Secrets with Dr. Andrew Jones, DVM, describes a 2005 study by Iranian researchers at Shiraz University. In that secondary account, 33 people with multiple warts were assigned to groups using water extract of garlic, fat-soluble garlic extract, or a chloroform/methanol solvent without garlic. The article reports that the water extract cleared small warts and partially improved larger ones over two months; warts in the fat-soluble extract group disappeared in under two weeks; and the solvent-control group showed no improvement. It also reports complete recovery from corns for seven of nine patients and no wart recurrence during a four-month follow-up. Veterinary Secrets with Dr. Andrew Jones, DVM

Those results are the article’s account of a human study, not verified primary-study statistics. The original clinical paper was not retrieved, so its full methods, randomization, statistical analysis, and the consistency of the reported participant totals and groups could not be checked. The account does not establish that garlic works on animal papillomas.

Can you put garlic on a dog’s or cat’s wart?

The human study does not establish either benefit or topical safety for pets. It is not a basis for applying garlic extract, raw garlic, or a homemade paste to a dog or cat, and it does not provide an animal dose or protocol. The evidence summarized here did not identify a clinical trial testing topical garlic on canine or feline papillomas.

Garlic findings from studies using other routes do not fill that gap. A 2018 study gave beagles aged garlic extract by mouth at 45 or 90 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks. At the higher dose, it reported no observable changes in measured clinical signs, blood counts, or serum biochemical parameters during the study, alongside changes in selected gene expression. That narrow oral study does not establish the safety of raw garlic, topical use, use in cats, or application to a wart. 2018 beagle study

In a separate experiment, dogs given a high dose of garlic extract by stomach tube for seven days showed changes in red-cell measures, Heinz bodies, and eccentrocytes. The authors concluded that garlic constituents can oxidize canine red blood cells. This experiment does not quantify the risk of topical exposure, but it is a reason not to assume every garlic preparation is harmless. Garlic extract and canine red blood cells

Is the growth actually a wart?

Dogs and cats can develop papillomavirus-associated lesions, including oral papillomas and skin lesions. But a bump that looks wart-like is not a confirmed diagnosis. The type and cause of a growth matter, and appearance alone cannot establish that it is a papilloma. A 2023 veterinary review discusses papillomavirus-associated lesions in both species; it does not validate garlic as treatment. 2023 review of papillomaviruses in dogs and cats

What usually happens to canine papillomas?

Many canine oral papillomas regress within weeks, and many cutaneous warts resolve spontaneously, although some persist. The course varies by lesion type. Cutaneous warts are less frequently described in cats, according to the 2023 review. These observations are not a reason to diagnose or monitor an unexplained lump without veterinary guidance.

Arrange veterinary assessment if a growth is changing, bleeding, painful, inflamed, infected, or otherwise uncertain. A veterinarian can determine whether it is a papilloma and advise whether observation or treatment is appropriate.

Does a veterinary treatment study prove every papilloma needs medication?

No. A small randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial studied oral azithromycin for canine papillomatosis and reported clinical improvement in its treatment group. That is an example of a veterinary treatment trial, not a general recommendation to medicate every papilloma, and it says nothing about garlic. Azithromycin trial for canine papillomatosis
