Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) records include several sizable gar entries from those connected waters, but they do not rank fishing spots or establish catch rates. Treat them as leads for planning, not promises of a catch.
Where have gar been recorded in the Lake Michigan region?
The DNR’s 2024 Master Angler Awards report lists longnose gar caught in Muskegon Lake and the Muskegon River. These are Lake Michigan-connected waters; the entries do not establish that the fish were caught in open Lake Michigan.

These are individual approved catch entries, not a survey of gar abundance or a measure of how likely anglers are to catch one. The report also lists catches from other Michigan waters, including Kent Lake, the Grand River, Maple River, and Lake Leelanau; those are not Lake Michigan shoreline locations.

Muskegon Lake and the channel
Muskegon Lake is the strongest documented starting point in the Lake Michigan region because the 2024 report includes three gar entries from the lake. The DNR’s Central Lake Michigan Management Unit page describes public access around Muskegon Lake, along the channel, and at nearby piers. These are access options, not DNR-identified gar hotspots.

The DNR describes the channel and piers mainly for fishing salmon, steelhead, brown trout, whitefish, yellow perch, channel catfish, walleye, and freshwater drum. That general fishery description is not evidence of targeted gar success at each access point.
Muskegon River
The 45-inch entry from May 8, 2024, confirms a recorded longnose gar catch from the Muskegon River. The management-unit page provides river access and general fishery context, but does not identify gar-specific locations. Check DNR access information and current conditions before choosing a stretch.

The DNR’s Master Angler map is useful for exploring reported catches, but the agency cautions that locations come from anglers and may be generalized to a lake center or river drainage. Do not treat map points as precise coordinates.

Michigan’s listed longnose gar state record is 18 pounds and 53 inches, caught in 1995 at Williamsville Lake in Livingston County. The DNR lists spincasting and a Green Rattle Trap as the method and lure. That is one documented catch example—not proof that a Rattle Trap-style lipless crankbait is the best choice or that a particular color or retrieve will work. The record information is on the DNR’s state record fish page.

The 2024 Muskegon-area entries fall in April, May, and September. Those dates show when those particular fish were caught; they do not establish a seasonal pattern or predict when gar will be active. For trip planning, use the DNR’s fishing information page to find official resources, including current reports and access information.

Michigan’s 2026 Fishing Regulations are in effect through March 31, 2027, according to the DNR. Consult the current booklet for the specific water and fishing method you plan to use rather than assuming a statewide gar season or limit. The DNR regulations page identifies mandatory harvest registration for lake sturgeon and muskellunge, not gar.

If you believe you have a record fish, note that Michigan recognizes state records by weight only. The DNR says a fisheries biologist must verify the identification, and the fish must exceed the current listed record weight.
