Gather’s current U.S. cat-food catalog lists one recipe: Free Acres Organic Free-Run Chicken Recipe for Adult Cats, a dry food formulated for adult maintenance. It has named chicken ingredients and certified-organic sourcing, but organic certification alone does not establish a health advantage, and peas and lentils feature prominently after the chicken. Cats.com rates the brand 6.7/10, with limited variety its clearest drawback. This is a narrow choice to consider for an adult cat—not a lineup for kittens or owners seeking multiple recipes or formats.
What Gather cat food is available?
Gather’s U.S. cat-food catalog currently shows Free Acres Organic Free-Run Chicken Recipe for Adult Cats. The official product page lists it as dry food in 4 lb and 8 lb bags. The available catalog is therefore limited to one cat recipe, rather than a broad selection of life stages, proteins, or wet and dry foods.
The manufacturer says the recipe is formulated to meet the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance. That statement and the adult-cat labeling make it an adult-maintenance formula; it should not be described as suitable for kittens or all life stages.
What is in the Free Acres recipe?
Gather lists organic chicken and dehydrated chicken first, followed by organic peas and lentils. The remaining listed ingredients include chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols, organic flaxseed, natural flavor, blueberries, cranberries, vitamins and minerals, DL-methionine, calcium carbonate, taurine, and dried rosemary. The leading ingredients provide a named animal-protein source, while peas and lentils are also prominent in the list.
#1 Best Overall
- Organic Chicken as the #1 Ingredient: Made with single-source poultry protein from USDA certified organic, free-run chickens that are raised in smaller flocks on family farms
- Certified Organic Ingredients: This wheat-free, corn-free, and soy-free recipe is made with certified organic ingredients, like organic peas, with zero artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives and no genetically modified ingredients
- Complete & Balanced Nutrition: Formulated for adult cats by pet nutritionists using functional ingredients like antioxidant-rich berries to support immune function, fiber-rich organic flaxseed for digestion, and taurine to aid vision and heart health
- Sourced from Responsible Suppliers: We select ingredient partners that meet defined sustainability criteria, including water-efficient farming, soil health practices, and approaches that help maintain biodiversity and protect ecosystems.
- Reducing our Carbon Paw-print: We use organic farming methods that avoid synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, helping lower emissions. Our packaging contains 30% certified plant-based material, reducing reliance on petroleum-based plastics.
Gather says the chicken is certified organic and free-run. Its company sourcing information also describes screening ingredient suppliers and not using by-product meals or unnamed meat meals. These are manufacturer claims, not independent verification of each ingredient source.
Petcurean, Gather’s parent company, distinguishes sourcing from a “human-grade” claim. Its Ingredient FAQs says some fruits and vegetables come from the human food chain, but says the company does not claim they remain human-grade after entering a pet-food processor. Organic certification is likewise a sourcing and production attribute; the available information does not demonstrate that it makes this recipe healthier for an individual cat.

How does the independent review rate Gather?
Cats.com gives Gather an overall 6.7/10 (40/60, a B) in its brand review. Its rubric scores the brand on species appropriateness, ingredient quality, product variety, price, customer experience, and recall history. The scores below are Cats.com’s judgments, not a consensus rating or veterinary finding.
| Category | Cats.com score |
|---|---|
| Species appropriateness | 7/10 |
| Ingredient quality | 9/10 |
| Product variety | 2/10 |
| Price | 5/10 |
| Customer experience | 8/10 |
| Recall history | 9/10 |
Cats.com awards the Free Acres recipe a B+ in its product table, praising its ingredient quality and identifying peas and lentils high in the ingredient list as a concern. Its low variety score reflects the limited cat-food selection. The prominence of those plant ingredients is an editorial consideration, not evidence that they harm cats.

How should you decide whether it suits your cat?
- Check life stage: This is labeled for adult cats and formulated for maintenance, not kitten growth.
- Consider ingredient preferences: Chicken leads the list, but peas and lentils follow near the top. If you are choosing food to manage a health condition, ask your veterinarian rather than relying on ingredient order alone.
- Account for the format: It is dry food. The current catalog does not offer a choice of cat recipes or a wet-food alternative.
- Use the calorie information carefully: Gather reports 403 kcal per 250 ml cup. The maker says calorie needs vary with factors such as age, activity, breed, and climate, and recommends adjusting portions to maintain ideal weight.
Gather recommends weighing portions for accuracy. If measuring by volume, its stated calorie value is based on a standard 250 ml cup. Your cat’s ideal portion depends on individual needs, so use the package feeding guidance as a starting point and consult a veterinarian for medical or dietary questions.

Cats.com reports that it found no Gather recalls in the U.S. FDA database during its review. It also discusses a 2003 voluntary Petcurean Go! event later reclassified as a market withdrawal. That is the review site’s account, not a current, exhaustive regulator check. For up-to-date status, consult the FDA and relevant authorities’ notices before making a purchase.
Verdict
Gather Free Acres is a single, adult-maintenance dry recipe with organic chicken at the top of its ingredient list and manufacturer-reported nutrient and calorie values. Cats.com rates ingredient quality highly but flags the limited range and the prominence of peas and lentils. It may merit consideration if its adult life-stage, chicken recipe, dry format, and sourcing attributes suit your priorities; the available information does not establish an individual health benefit from organic ingredients. Compare the label and feeding needs with your veterinarian’s advice when a cat has a medical or special dietary requirement.
