1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGeorgia does not have one official animal that represents every category. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Resources Division’s FY2025 fact sheet, updated in September 2025, names 12 animal categories and their designated species. They include the whitetail deer, brown thrasher, gopher tortoise, green treefrog, four separately classified game fish, the eastern tiger swallowtail and the honeybee.
The often-used headline “15 official state animals” needs qualification. A 2025 Georgia Code index shows additional animal-related headings for a state dog, state ’Possum and state crustacean, but the material available here does not establish the designated names for those categories or prove that they are the three additions intended by the 15-item count. The defensible current list is therefore the DNR’s 12 named entries, followed by a clear explanation of what remains to be verified.

The 12 animal designations Georgia’s DNR currently names
The DNR fact sheet uses “State Species” rather than a single all-purpose “state animal” label. Every row below is a separate designation. In particular, Georgia treats its ordinary state mammal, marine mammal, state bird and game bird as different categories.
| Official category on the DNR fact sheet | Designated animal or species | What the label means |
|---|---|---|
| State Reptile | Gopher Tortoise | Georgia’s reptile symbol |
| State Amphibian | Green Treefrog | Georgia’s amphibian symbol |
| State Marine Mammal | North Atlantic Right Whale | The marine-mammal designation, distinct from the general mammal category |
| State Mammal | Whitetail Deer | Georgia’s general mammal designation |
| State Bird | Brown Thrasher | The state bird category |
| State Game Bird | Bobwhite Quail | A separate game-bird category, not a replacement for the state bird |
| State Coldwater Game Fish | Brook Trout | A fish designation defined by the coldwater-game-fish category |
| State Freshwater Game Fish | Largemouth Bass | The freshwater-game-fish designation |
| State Saltwater Game Fish | Red Drum | The saltwater-game-fish designation |
| State Riverine Game Fish | Shoal Bass | The riverine-game-fish designation |
| State Butterfly | Eastern Tiger Swallowtail | Georgia’s butterfly symbol |
| State Insect | Honeybee | Georgia’s insect symbol |
This is a 12-category list, not a claim that Georgia has only 12 animal-related symbols. The number “12” belongs specifically to the September 2025 DNR fact sheet’s State Species section.

Why “15” appears in some Georgia state-animal lists
The Georgia Code’s Title 50, Chapter 3, Article 3 index organizes state symbols under many separate headings. Alongside categories represented on the DNR sheet, the index displays headings for a state dog, state ’Possum and state crustacean. It also lists the bird, game bird, fish, mammal, butterfly, insect, reptile, amphibian, cold-water game fish, salt-water fish and riverine sport-fish categories, among others.
That structure explains how a writer could arrive at 15 animal-related categories by adding three headings to the DNR’s 12. It does not, by itself, verify that those are the intended additions. The index is a secondary-hosted index and warns that it may not be the latest version. An index heading is not a substitute for reading the operative statute, and the available text does not provide the designated species for the dog, ’Possum or crustacean headings.
What can be stated confidently
- The DNR’s current fact sheet names 12 categories and gives a species for each one.
- Georgia law treats animal symbols as separate legal categories rather than one universal animal designation.
- The state dog, state ’Possum and state crustacean appear as headings in the 2025 code index.
- The exact 15-entry inventory cannot be presented as settled without checking the operative provisions and confirming the scope intended by the headline.
What should not be assumed
- Do not count the four fish categories as one “state fish.” They are printed as four distinct DNR designations.
- Do not treat the North Atlantic right whale as a second name for the whitetail deer. One is the marine mammal; the other is the general mammal.
- Do not assign a species to the state dog, ’Possum or crustacean category from an unsourced list.
- Do not attribute the number 15 to the DNR fact sheet; its State Species list contains 12 entries.
How to read Georgia’s animal categories
State mammal and state marine mammal
“State Mammal” and “State Marine Mammal” are intentionally separate labels. The whitetail deer occupies the general mammal category, while the North Atlantic right whale occupies the marine-mammal category. Listing one without the other gives an incomplete picture of the DNR’s classifications.
State bird and state game bird
The brown thrasher is the State Bird. The bobwhite quail is the State Game Bird. “Game bird” is not a descriptive nickname for the state bird; it is its own category in the fact sheet and in Georgia’s state-symbol framework. A quiz asking for Georgia’s state bird expects the brown thrasher, whereas a question specifically asking for the game bird expects the bobwhite quail.

Four separate game-fish designations
Georgia’s fact sheet divides game fish into four categories:
- Coldwater: brook trout.
- Freshwater: largemouth bass.
- Saltwater: red drum.
- Riverine: shoal bass.
These labels describe the legal or agency category attached to each symbol. Calling largemouth bass “the state fish” without saying “State Freshwater Game Fish” erases the distinctions the DNR publishes. The Georgia Fact Book 2024 also identifies largemouth bass as the state fish and the right whale as the state marine mammal, but the DNR sheet is the source for the complete four-part fish breakdown used here.
Reptile and amphibian
The gopher tortoise is Georgia’s State Reptile, and the green treefrog is the State Amphibian. Those are different biological groups and different official headings. They should not be combined into a generic “state cold-blooded animal” category.

Butterfly and insect
The eastern tiger swallowtail is the State Butterfly, while the honeybee is the State Insect. A butterfly is technically an insect, but Georgia gives it a dedicated symbol category as well as a broader insect category. Both entries belong in a complete list.

Georgia’s 12 named species, explained without category mix-ups
Gopher tortoise — State Reptile
The gopher tortoise is the exact name printed for Georgia’s reptile designation. In a reference list, retain the full common name “gopher tortoise” rather than shortening it to “tortoise,” which could make the entry less precise.
Green treefrog — State Amphibian
The green treefrog fills the amphibian category. Its listing alongside the gopher tortoise does not create a combined reptile-and-amphibian symbol; each remains a separate state designation.
North Atlantic right whale — State Marine Mammal
The full category is State Marine Mammal, and the species name is North Atlantic right whale. The marine qualifier matters because Georgia also has a separate State Mammal entry.

Brown thrasher — State Bird
The brown thrasher is Georgia’s State Bird. It is not interchangeable with the bobwhite quail, which appears under State Game Bird.
Bobwhite quail — State Game Bird
The bobwhite quail is the separate game-bird symbol. The category label is essential when answering a question that distinguishes Georgia’s bird symbols.
Brook trout — State Coldwater Game Fish
Brook trout is tied to the coldwater game-fish heading. “Coldwater” is part of the official category name in the DNR list.

Red drum — State Saltwater Game Fish
Red drum is the species listed under State Saltwater Game Fish. The saltwater label separates it from the freshwater, coldwater and riverine entries.
Shoal bass — State Riverine Game Fish
Shoal bass appears under State Riverine Game Fish. The DNR’s wording is “riverine,” while the code index uses a related “riverine sport fish” heading; those labels should be checked against operative statutory text before being treated as identical legal wording.
Eastern tiger swallowtail — State Butterfly
The eastern tiger swallowtail is the dedicated butterfly symbol. It belongs in addition to, not instead of, the honeybee under State Insect.
Honeybee — State Insect
The honeybee is the broad insect-category entry. Georgia’s separate butterfly heading is why both the eastern tiger swallowtail and honeybee appear in the 12-item list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a claimed 15-item list
- Start with the DNR baseline. Use the Wildlife Resources Division FY2025 fact sheet updated September 2025 and copy its 12 category-and-species pairs exactly.
- Identify the three proposed additions. A list claiming 15 should name the categories it adds rather than silently appending three animals.
- Read the operative Georgia provisions. Use the official Georgia source for Title 50, Chapter 3, Article 3; do not rely on an index heading alone.
- Confirm each designated name. The state dog, ’Possum and crustacean headings visible in the index do not, in the material available here, establish their species names.
- Label the source for every row. Mark DNR fact-sheet entries separately from categories established only by statute, so readers can see why the lists differ.
- Date the result. State-symbol laws and agency fact sheets can change. Include the fact sheet’s September 2025 update date and the date of the statutory check.
Common mistakes when answering “What is Georgia’s state animal?”
- Giving one animal as though it covers the state: Georgia uses multiple animal-related symbols.
- Reporting only the whitetail deer: That answers the general mammal category, not the marine mammal, bird, fish, reptile, amphibian, butterfly or insect categories.
- Reporting only one fish: The DNR lists four game-fish categories with four different species.
- Calling the brown thrasher the game bird: The brown thrasher is State Bird; bobwhite quail is State Game Bird.
- Presenting an unverified 15-row table: The additional category headings need operative-law verification and designated names before they can be stated as a definitive 15-item inventory.
Bottom line on Georgia’s “15 official state animals”
For a current, source-faithful answer, cite the 12 species on the DNR’s FY2025 State Species fact sheet: gopher tortoise, green treefrog, North Atlantic right whale, whitetail deer, brown thrasher, bobwhite quail, brook trout, largemouth bass, red drum, shoal bass, eastern tiger swallowtail and honeybee. Explain each category exactly as the agency does.
If a publisher or classroom worksheet requires 15 entries, treat that as a scope question rather than a settled fact. The code index shows three additional animal-related headings—state dog, state ’Possum and state crustacean—but their designated names and their status as the intended additions must be confirmed in the operative Georgia statutes.
