When symptoms do occur, diarrhea is possible—but stool appearance alone cannot confirm Giardia. A veterinarian diagnoses the infection with fecal testing and decides whether treatment is appropriate. Prompt cleanup and careful hygiene help reduce contamination and reinfection.
What causes Giardia infection in cats?
Giardiasis is infection with the intestinal protozoan usually called Giardia duodenalis. Cats become infected by swallowing Giardia cysts shed in feces or left in contaminated surroundings. The parasite lives in the small intestine, and cysts passed in stool can remain infective, particularly in cool, damp conditions.

Infection is more common in multi-cat homes and catteries, and in cats younger than one year, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center. These circumstances raise exposure risk; they do not establish that a cat has Giardia.
What symptoms can Giardia cause?
Many infected cats have no obvious symptoms. When giardiasis causes illness, it may be associated with intermittent or persistent diarrhea and soft, poorly formed stool. Stool may be pale, foul-smelling, contain mucus, or appear fatty. Weight loss can also occur.

Watery diarrhea, blood in the stool, and vomiting are unusual signs of giardiasis, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. Diarrhea and weight loss have many possible causes, so neither symptoms nor stool appearance can diagnose Giardia. Contact your veterinarian if your cat has ongoing diarrhea, weight loss, or other concerning changes.
How do veterinarians diagnose giardiasis?
A veterinarian tests feces for Giardia cysts, parasite antigen, or—in some settings—Giardia DNA. The methods detect different evidence of infection:

- Fecal examination: Looks for cysts in a stool sample.
- Antigen testing: Looks for Giardia antigens in feces, commonly using a sensitive fecal ELISA.
- Molecular testing: PCR can detect Giardia DNA in feces when an appropriate test is available.
The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends combining fecal examination methods with a sensitive, specific fecal ELISA or PCR optimized for companion animals when testing symptomatic cats (CAPC Giardia guidance). Because cats may shed cysts intermittently, one sample can miss an infection; a veterinarian may recommend additional samples or more than one testing method. The veterinarian may also investigate other causes of diarrhea.

Treatment depends on the cat’s signs and circumstances, and the decision belongs with a veterinarian. Some cats have an infection without clinical illness, while treatment in a cat with symptoms is intended to address those signs. In the United States, the Merck Veterinary Manual and CAPC report that no drug is approved specifically to treat giardiasis in cats. Approval status and veterinary guidance can differ by country and may change.

How can you limit contamination and reinfection at home?
Removing feces promptly and keeping it away from food and water are central to control. Giardia cysts are susceptible to drying, so cleaning washable items and allowing them to dry thoroughly can help reduce environmental contamination.

- Scoop and dispose of feces promptly and regularly.
- Wash food and water bowls, bedding, and other washable items, then dry them thoroughly.
- Ask your veterinarian whether bathing is suitable for your cat. Bathing may remove cysts from the coat; a chlorhexidine cat shampoo may be discussed as a hygiene adjunct. It does not treat infection in the intestine.
Merck notes that no disinfectants are registered to kill Giardia cysts, so do not assume that a generic household cleaner eliminates them. As Merck Veterinary Manual author Lucy J. Robertson, PhD, puts it: “Good hygiene practices should be considered an essential component of control.”

Giardia can infect people, but veterinary references describe transmission from cats as relatively rare or not conclusively demonstrated in North America. The Merck Veterinary Manual says zoonotic transmission from cats appears relatively rare, likely because Giardia types tend to be host-specific. CAPC says human infection from a dog or cat source has not been conclusively demonstrated in North America (CAPC Giardia guidance).

- Natural sand is heavy, to avoid high costs as result of shipping and logistics, and after many years of testing, we arrived at an optimized amount of sand that is enough for the vast majority of cats to use once, yet still remain affordable. The amount of sand supplied in the 3 bags is meant for a one-time use all at once.
- Unlike Other Non-absorbing products, our Cat Litter has a patented Hydrophobic coating, this unique feature allows urine to rest on top of the sand no matter how much your cat tries to bury it, it will pop right back up easily when you move the sand from on top of it.
- Cats Love it! Its the only 100% Natural True Hydrophobic Sand That is Non-toxic and Odorless, Unlike Other Brands That Do Not Use Natural Sand. (Cats are picky animals, some more than others, and will take time to use the sand)
- Unlike cystocentesis which involves an expensive invasive procedure, this method of Cat urine collection is clean, easy, quick and simple, and most importantly non-invasive, which can be done at-home before a visit at the Vet.
- Early detection is important! Stay on top of your Cats health with the 2 testing Strips included and test for the 4 most common indicators for your pet's health - Glucose, Blood in the urine, pH, and Protein.
Use routine precautions: wash your hands after handling feces or contaminated items and clean up promptly. If someone develops gastrointestinal symptoms after exposure, they should seek medical advice.
