FVRCP is a core combination vaccine for cats that helps protect against feline panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus-1, and feline calicivirus. Kittens usually receive a series of doses, while adult boosters depend on age, vaccine history, product, and route. Prices vary by clinic, and there is no reliable current national price range; ask what a local quote includes. Your veterinarian should set the plan for your cat.
What does the FVRCP vaccine protect against?
FVRCP combines protection against three feline diseases: feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), and feline calicivirus (FCV). These are considered core vaccine targets in the AAHA/AAFP core-vaccine guidance. Vaccination reduces disease risk but does not guarantee complete protection, and it does not treat an infection already present.

When do kittens get FVRCP shots?
For parenteral (injected) core combination vaccines, AAHA/AAFP guidance says the series can begin at 6 weeks of age or later, with doses repeated every 3–4 weeks until the kitten is 16–20 weeks old. The exact product and route can change the schedule, so use the veterinarian’s plan rather than applying these intervals to every vaccine.
Why the series has repeated doses
Maternal antibodies passed from the mother can interfere with a kitten’s response to vaccination, and the age at which that interference wanes varies. Repeated doses increase the chance that a dose is given after maternal antibodies have fallen enough for the vaccine to work. The AAHA/AAFP vaccination principles note that intervals shorter than 2 weeks can interfere with successful immunization.

Booster after the kitten series
AAHA/AAFP recommends considering an additional FVRCP revaccination at 6 months after the kitten series. This is intended to reduce a possible susceptibility window if maternal antibodies interfered with the final kitten dose. For applicable parenteral products, the guidance then lists revaccination every 3 years. The interval is not universal: intranasal vaccines and different product labels can have different schedules.
How often do adult cats need FVRCP?
For an adult cat starting vaccination after 16 weeks of age, the AAHA/AAFP core schedule distinguishes by product: attenuated-live products may require one or two doses, while inactivated products require two doses 3–4 weeks apart. Later revaccination depends on the specific product, route, label, and the cat’s circumstances.

A cat that is overdue or has unknown records needs a catch-up plan from a veterinarian. The number and timing of doses depend on the cat’s history and the vaccine selected; do not automatically restart a kitten schedule or assume that an annual booster is required. AAHA/AAFP addresses overdue cats in its vaccination FAQs.
- Bring any available vaccination records, including approximate dates and product details.
- Tell the veterinarian about the cat’s health, lifestyle, and likely exposure to other cats.
- Ask which product and route are being used, and when the next dose is due.
How much does an FVRCP shot cost?
There is no dependable, current general price range established here, and a single national figure would be misleading. Local cost depends on the provider and what is included in the visit. Call veterinary practices, shelters, or low-cost vaccine clinics and ask whether the quote covers only the vaccine or also an examination, other vaccines, or additional services.

What side effects should I watch for after my cat’s vaccine?
Common short-term reactions
Some cats may be less energetic or have soreness or swelling at the injection site for a short time. Monitor your cat and contact the veterinary clinic if a reaction concerns you or is not improving.
Signs that need immediate veterinary attention
Anaphylaxis is rare but potentially life-threatening. The AAHA/AAFP adverse-reaction guidance estimates approximately 1–5 cases per 10,000 vaccinations (2020). Seek immediate veterinary attention for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, itching, or collapse after vaccination. The guideline lists these among possible signs of a serious reaction; do not wait to see whether they resolve on their own. See AAHA/AAFP’s adverse postvaccination reaction guidance.
Rank #4
Persistent lumps
Injection-site sarcoma is a recognized but low risk. Follow the veterinarian’s advice about injection sites and have a persistent or concerning lump assessed rather than assuming it is harmless. The AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidance discusses injection-site practices and monitoring. No FVRCP-specific incidence is established here.

How should you weigh the benefits and risks?
AAHA/AAFP states that “Although the administration of biological products is never entirely free of risk, currently available feline vaccines have an excellent safety record.” Vaccine decisions should still account for the individual cat’s health and likelihood of exposure. Cornell’s Feline Health Center overview likewise explains that no vaccine is 100 percent effective and that benefits and risks should be considered together.
