Gujarat’s official estimate rose to 891 Asiatic lions in 2025, from 674 in 2020. The increase is real in the reported estimates, but it does not establish that the lions are overpopulated: the latest figures also reflect a population spread across the wider Gir and Greater Gir landscape, and the sources cited here do not set a carrying-capacity threshold for that landscape.
How many Asiatic lions are there in Gir?
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reported the Gujarat Forest Department’s estimates to Parliament on 5 February 2026. The figures cover Gujarat’s lions across the Gir and Greater Gir landscape—not just animals inside Gir National Park.

| Estimation year | Gujarat lion population estimate |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 674 (Gujarat Forest Department estimate, reported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2026) |
| 2025 | 891 (Gujarat Forest Department estimate, reported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2026) |
These are official estimates, not an independently audited census. Gujarat’s 2025 estimation report documents three new satellite populations and records satellite and corridor populations in the estimation exercise. The state’s report describes these populations as a “second home” within Gujarat; that means a broader distribution inside the state, not a second population established outside it.
The Gujarat Forest Department’s “About Gir National Park” page says Asiatic lions roam over more than 22,000 sq km of Saurashtra. That is a range statement, not a measurement of intact forest, protected land or suitable habitat throughout that area. The page also notes the reliance of Maldharis and forest settlers on livestock and forest resources, and refers to habitat improvement and grass harvest for scarcity relief.

Are lions in Gujarat overpopulated?
The available figures establish population growth and geographic expansion, but not overpopulation. That conclusion would require evidence about the landscape’s capacity to support lions over time—not just a rising estimate or a larger occupied range. Relevant evidence would include habitat condition and connectivity, prey availability, demographic trends, and the effects of lion presence on both wildlife and nearby communities.
The Gujarat Forest Department’s 2025 report gives an adult male-to-adult female ratio of 1:1.68 and an adult female-to-cub ratio of 1:0.68. These are ratios reported for that estimation exercise; they are not, on their own, a measure of long-term viability or proof that the population has exceeded ecological limits.
No carrying-capacity threshold is provided in the cited government material. Nor does it provide a current quantified habitat-loss rate or a location-by-location account of fragmentation and its causes. “Habitat loss” is therefore a concern that needs better measurement here, not a demonstrated explanation for the expansion.

Why are Asiatic lions spreading beyond Gir?
The 5 February 2026 parliamentary response says lions have inhabited new areas, including notified forest areas, river corridors and revenue wastelands. The 2025 estimation report’s documentation of satellite and corridor populations supports the conclusion that lions now use a broader landscape than the protected Gir core. It does not establish why any individual lion moved, or whether every newly occupied area offers secure habitat.
The same government response lists a comprehensive satellite telemetry study intended to inform understanding of lion ecology, spatial distribution, corridor use, satellite populations, seasonal patterns, land-use preferences and management zones. That work is relevant because occupied range and high-quality, connected habitat are different things.
Why do lions enter villages, and what is known about conflict?
Lions and people share parts of the wider Saurashtra landscape, where some residents depend on livestock and forest resources. That context makes coexistence and safety important, but it cannot explain a particular village visit or establish how often conflict occurs.

The Ministry’s 2026 response describes trackers and Vanya PraniMitras who sensitize nearby residents about wild-animal movement. It also refers to strengthened veterinary facilities in connection with conflict and disease vulnerability. These are government-reported measures; the cited response does not quantify their outcomes.
The sources cited here do not provide a current comparable series for attacks, livestock losses, human fatalities, compensation claims or payouts. Without those data, the scale and distribution of present-day conflict cannot be responsibly summarized with a single annual figure.
Could an outbreak or disaster threaten all Asiatic lions?
Concentrating a species in one region can create a shared risk if disease, a natural disaster or severe conflict affects that region. That concern was part of the historical case for establishing a second free-ranging population outside Gir.

In its 2013 judgment in Centre for Environmental Law, WWF-India v. Union of India, the Supreme Court reproduced the National Board for Wildlife Standing Committee’s assessment: “The population of Asiatic Lions in India has been restricted to its habitat in the Gir National Park and Gir Sanctuary alone, where they face threats due to man-animal conflict, outbreak of possible epidemic or any natural calamity, etc. Such actions may wipe out the whole population.” The judgment also records that Kuno Palpur was considered the most suitable site in the cited technical assessment for reintroduction and a second free-ranging population.
This is a historical rationale, not a current description of lion distribution or an update on whether an outside-Gujarat population has been established. The 2025 Gujarat report’s “second home” refers to satellite populations within Gujarat; it should not be confused with the separate proposal for a population beyond Gir and the state.

The Ministry’s 2026 parliamentary response lists satellite telemetry, community-facing trackers, grassland restoration, prey-base augmentation and habitat improvement across Gir and Greater Gir. A separate 21 August 2025 parliamentary response describes Project Lion as landscape-ecology-based conservation integrating conservation and eco-development, and lists habitat management, disease surveillance, veterinary care, ICT-based tracking and eco-development as program activities. These are reported actions, not an assessment of how effective they have been.

The measures address different needs. Telemetry and ecological monitoring can inform where lions move and how corridors are used; trackers and Vanya PraniMitras are aimed at communication with nearby residents. Grassland and prey measures concern habitat and food resources, while veterinary and disease-surveillance work addresses health risks. Their actual effects on lion survival, connectivity and human safety require measured outcomes.
What evidence would clarify the crisis?
- Habitat and corridors: publish dated, location-specific assessments of habitat condition, fragmentation and land-use change, rather than treating all occupied range as equally suitable or protected.
- Conflict and costs: report comparable district-level incidents, livestock losses, injuries, fatalities, compensation claims and payouts, with consistent dates and definitions.
- Health readiness: explain how disease surveillance and veterinary capacity are being evaluated, including how risks are managed across the wider lion range.
- Management results: measure whether telemetry, habitat work, prey-base measures and community outreach improve conservation and safety outcomes.
- Geographic risk: assess the benefits and practical risks of maintaining connected populations within Gujarat alongside the distinct conservation question of a second free-ranging population outside Gir.
The central issue is not whether the estimate has risen—it has—but whether the expanding population can be supported safely across a connected, well-managed landscape. The available official sources document growth, wider distribution and government measures; they do not yet settle the claims of overpopulation, quantified habitat loss or the present scale of conflict.
