There is no universally safe list of goldfish tank mates. The 13 animals below are candidates named by Aquarium Source, but a workable pairing depends on the goldfish variety, the adult size of every animal, swimming speed, temperament, water requirements, group size and the aquarium’s capacity. Treat the list as a screening tool, not a guarantee.
For many aquariums, the safest companion is another appropriately matched goldfish. Smaller schooling fish can become prey as goldfish grow, while slow or fancy goldfish may lose access to food when housed with faster swimmers. Read the compatibility checks before adding any species.

What makes a goldfish tank mate suitable?
Compatibility is a system-level decision. A fish that tolerates the same water temperature may still be too small, too quick, too aggressive, or too demanding of group space. Evaluate every candidate against these questions:

RSPCA Australia advises that other fish should be larger than the goldfish’s mouth. OATA specifically warns that larger goldfish may eat white cloud mountain minnows, even when the pairing appears possible while the goldfish are small.
- Can the animals use the same water conditions? Compare temperature preference, pH and hardness needs, and tolerance of the aquarium’s filtration and maintenance routine. A shared “freshwater” label is not enough.
- Can everyone reach food? Fancy or otherwise unusual goldfish may have difficulty locating and competing for food beside stronger, faster swimmers. RSPCA Australia recommends specialized care and additional research for unusual body types.
- Will anyone nip fins? Extended-finned goldfish should not be kept with fish prone to fin-nipping.
- Does the companion need a group? OATA says danios and white cloud mountain minnows should be kept in groups of at least five. A group that is too small can cause stress.
- Is there room for the full adult stock? Count the goldfish, the required shoal or group, and the adult size of bottom-dwellers. OATA notes that larger aquariums are more stable in temperature and water quality.
These checks matter more than whether a species appears on a “best tank mates” list. The Aquarium Source article presents 13 possibilities; its recommendations should be interpreted through the constraints above.

“Listed” does not mean “safe for every setup.” Before purchase, verify the adult size and care sheet for the exact species and compare it with your goldfish’s variety and aquarium.
How goldfish variety changes the answer
Fancy and unusual-bodied goldfish
RSPCA Australia cautions that unusual body shapes can make it difficult for a goldfish to locate food and compete with faster swimmers. A slow, round-bodied or extended-finned fish may therefore need a calmer community than an athletic single-tail fish. If a companion consistently reaches food first, the arrangement is failing even if there is no chasing.
Fast-swimming goldfish
More athletic goldfish can outcompete peaceful bottom-dwellers and smaller schooling fish. Their growth also changes predation risk: a minnow that was ignored by a juvenile may become prey to an adult.

Fin type and nipping risk
RSPCA Australia says extended-finned goldfish should not be housed with fish prone to fin-nipping. Observe the actual fish rather than relying on a species label. Torn fins, repeated chasing, clamped fins or a fish hiding continuously are reasons to separate the animals.
Species-by-species guidance
Rosy barb
Aquarium Source includes rosy barbs among its candidates. Assess the adult barb’s size against the goldfish’s mouth, its activity level and its tendency to nip fins before considering the pairing. The inspected official sources do not independently confirm rosy barbs with goldfish, so treat this as an individual, observation-dependent choice rather than a standard recommendation.
Platy fish
Platies appear on Aquarium Source’s list. Confirm the adult size, any group requirement for the particular stock, and the water parameters needed by both species. A small platy may fail the mouth-size test as a goldfish grows, and a group of livebearers can add more bioload than the aquarium plan allows.

Bristlenose pleco
Aquarium Source names bristlenose plecos as candidates. Their bottom-dwelling lifestyle does not remove the need to check adult size, food access and water chemistry. Make sure the pleco receives food without being displaced and that the filter and maintenance schedule can handle the combined waste load. No inspected official source independently validates this specific pairing.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHillstream loach
Hillstream loaches are listed by Aquarium Source, but their specialized habitat and flow requirements deserve particular scrutiny. A tank adjusted for a loach may not suit every goldfish, and a goldfish setup may not provide the conditions the loach needs. Confirm the exact care requirements before purchase; do not add one solely because it occupies a different level of the aquarium.
Hoplo catfish
Hoplo catfish are another Aquarium Source candidate. Check adult size, floor area, hiding places and feeding access. The official guidance inspected for this guide does not establish a universal goldfish compatibility rule for hoplo catfish.
Cherry shrimp
Cherry shrimp are small enough to present a serious predation question. Even if adults survive, juveniles and recently molted shrimp may be vulnerable. Dense cover can provide refuge, but hiding places do not guarantee safety. Add shrimp only if you accept that the goldfish may eat them and have a plan to remove them if harassment occurs.
Banded corydoras
Aquarium Source lists banded corydoras. Verify the adult size and social requirements for the exact corydoras species, then make sure the aquarium has enough unobstructed bottom area for a group and enough food reaches the substrate. The inspected official sources do not independently confirm this pairing.
Mystery snail
Mystery snails appear on Aquarium Source’s list, and Aqueon generally names apple, nerite and mystery snails as possible companions. That is broad aquarium-care guidance, not a promise that every goldfish will leave every snail alone. Check whether the goldfish can overturn, harass or bite the snail, and provide a way to separate it if damage occurs.

Giant danio
Giant danios are listed by Aquarium Source. OATA’s guidance for danios requires groups of at least five, so the decision is never about adding one fish; it is about housing a complete shoal. Compare the adult danio size with the goldfish’s mouth, watch for fin-nipping and allow room for fast swimming. The official guidance supports the group requirement, not a blanket endorsement of the goldfish pairing.
White cloud mountain minnow
This is the clearest caution in the list. RSPCA Australia mentions white cloud mountain minnows as a possible option for smaller aquariums, subject to size conditions. OATA warns that larger goldfish can eat them and recommends avoiding the pairing as goldfish become large. OATA also says to keep at least five minnows. A juvenile-goldfish arrangement can therefore become unsafe with growth; plan for separation rather than assuming the initial setup will remain compatible.
Rubber lip pleco
Rubber lip plecos are named by Aquarium Source. Confirm adult size, food requirements and water parameters, and check that the aquarium can support another bottom-oriented fish without crowding. The inspected official sources do not independently validate this particular combination.
Zebra danio
Zebra danios are listed by Aquarium Source, and OATA’s danio guidance requires at least five. Their speed and activity can make feeding difficult for slow or fancy goldfish, while fin-nipping would be unacceptable for extended-finned varieties. Evaluate a full shoal and the adult size of every fish, not a single store-sized specimen.
Dojo loach
Dojo loaches appear on Aquarium Source’s list. Check the adult size, floor area, cover and water requirements for the exact loach. Because this is a substantial bottom-dweller, calculate the adult bioload and space before adding it to an already stocked goldfish aquarium. No inspected official source independently confirms the pairing.
Companions mentioned outside the 13-item list
Other goldfish
RSPCA Australia says keeping at least two goldfish can provide companionship and promote activity. Matching still matters: unusual varieties may struggle to compete with stronger swimmers. Pair goldfish with similar swimming ability and feeding speed, and be prepared to separate fish that cannot maintain body condition.

Gold medaka
RSPCA Australia names gold medaka as a possible companion in smaller aquariums. The guidance does not establish that gold medaka suit every goldfish variety or every tank, so apply the mouth-size, group, water and capacity checks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Murray River rainbow fish
RSPCA Australia mentions Murray River rainbow fish for larger aquariums. “Larger” is not a complete stocking formula; confirm adult dimensions, group needs and the capacity of the specific aquarium before proceeding.
Snails generally
Aqueon names apple, nerite and mystery snails as possible companions. Treat this as general aquarium guidance. Goldfish behavior varies, and a snail that survives in one tank may be harassed in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan the aquarium before buying a companion
1. Record the current stock and adult sizes
Write down the goldfish variety, number, current size and expected adult size. Add the adult size and required group size of the proposed companion. If the animal is too small to pass the mouth-size test, reject it before purchase.
2. Check the complete water profile
OATA lists freshwater test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness and states: “Water quality test kits are a necessity not an optional extra.” Test the established aquarium before adding livestock and continue testing after the addition. A test kit supports maintenance; it does not make an incompatible pairing safe.
3. Confirm capacity for groups
OATA gives general figures of at least 45 litres for a small shoal of smaller species and 120 litres for larger danios of 5 cm or more. These are general guidance figures, not a complete goldfish-stocking formula. Goldfish, their filtration needs and any required shoal must all fit within the actual aquarium.

4. Prepare filtration and maintenance equipment
OATA’s setup checklist includes a filter, water conditioner or dechlorinator, substrate, and cleaning equipment such as a siphon and bucket. Have these ready before introducing a companion. Stable water quality is especially important when adding animals increases the biological load.
5. Quarantine or use a separation plan
Use a separate, appropriately maintained container when you need to observe a new arrival before permanent introduction. If you cannot separate fish quickly after aggression, predation or feeding failure, the aquarium is not ready for that experiment.
6. Introduce gradually and observe feeding
After acclimation to the aquarium’s water, release the newcomer with lights subdued and provide cover. Watch the first feeding closely: every fish should be able to find food, and no fish should be repeatedly chased or pinned away from it.
Warning signs that the pairing is failing
- Chasing, nipping, striking or repeated cornering
- Torn fins, missing scales or visible bites
- A fish hiding continuously or refusing food
- One species consuming food before another can reach it
- Rapid body-condition loss or a swollen, injured or stressed animal
- Water-test results worsening after the addition
- A shoaling species being kept below its required group size
At the first serious sign, move the affected animal to a prepared separate setup. Do not wait for the fish to “sort it out”; predation and injury can escalate quickly.
A practical decision rule
- Reject any candidate that fails the mouth-size test. This is especially important for white cloud mountain minnows and other small schooling fish as goldfish mature.
- Reject any candidate whose water requirements cannot overlap. If the species needs a specialized setup that conflicts with the goldfish’s needs, use separate aquariums.
- Reject fin-nippers for extended-finned goldfish.
- Budget for the complete group. Danios and white cloud mountain minnows require at least five according to OATA.
- Check food access for the slowest fish. A companion that is peaceful but much faster can still make the arrangement unsuitable.
- Confirm adult capacity, not store size. Include the goldfish, the full shoal and every bottom-dweller in the aquarium plan.
- Have a separation option before introduction. If there is no backup space, choose a lower-risk stocking plan.
Bottom line for “what fish can live with goldfish?”
The 13 Aquarium Source candidates—rosy barb, platy, bristlenose pleco, hillstream loach, hoplo catfish, cherry shrimp, banded corydoras, mystery snail, giant danio, white cloud mountain minnow, rubber lip pleco, zebra danio and dojo loach—are possibilities, not guarantees. The strongest evidence-based cautions concern size, growth and group care: fish must be larger than a goldfish’s mouth, danios and white cloud mountain minnows need groups of at least five, and OATA warns against keeping white cloud mountain minnows with larger goldfish. For many keepers, appropriately matched goldfish are the most predictable companions; every other option requires an aquarium-specific assessment and a ready separation plan.
