All pet goldfish belong to one species, Carassius auratus. What people call a “type” is a selectively bred variety, distinguished by body shape, tail and fin structure, eye shape, head growth, color or pattern. For practical care, start with two broad groups: single-tailed fish such as commons, comets and shubunkins, and fancy goldfish with rounder bodies or specialized features.

That distinction matters more than a color label. A juvenile goldfish can become a large, long-lived fish, and some fancy forms swim more slowly or see less effectively than single-tail varieties. Identify the form first, then choose an adult-sized aquarium, filtration, food and tank mates around its needs.

Are there lots of different species?

No. There is one commonly kept goldfish species, Carassius auratus, with many cultivated varieties. Practical Fishkeeping describes the familiar forms as varieties rather than separate species. Selective breeding has produced differences in proportions, fins, tails, eyes and coloration, but a comet and a bubble eye are still the same species.

There is no single worldwide list that establishes every goldfish variety or gives each strain a universally accepted standard. PetMD’s pages themselves use slightly different example lists. The names below are therefore representative, not an exhaustive registry. Individual fish can also vary within a named variety, especially in color, pattern and final size.

The two practical groups

Group Representative varieties Typical identifying tendencies Planning implication
Single-tailed or common types Common goldfish, comet, shubunkin and sarasa Straight or single tails, streamlined bodies and generally stronger, faster swimming Usually need generous horizontal swimming room and can grow fairly large
Fancy types Nymph, tamasaba, wakin, fantail, ryukin, telescope, butterfly tail, pompom, lionhead, ranchu, celestial eye and bubble eye; PetMD also lists oranda, black moor, pearlscale and tosakin Often rounder bodies, flowing or specialized fins, unusual eyes or head growth; many are slower or less robust than single-tail fish Prioritize turning space, gentle circulation, safe decor and compatible swimming speed

These are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every fish. A particular strain, age, body condition and rearing environment can change how well an individual swims and how large it becomes.

Single-tailed varieties

Common goldfish are the traditional single-tail form. They are generally robust and can become substantial fish when given room and good water quality.

Comets are also single-tailed, with a typically longer, flowing tail than the basic common form. Their active swimming makes an elongated aquarium or pond more useful than a tall, cramped container.

Shubunkins are single-tailed fish recognized in many examples by blue and speckled coloration. The pattern is a useful visual clue, not a promise that every individual will show exactly the same colors.

Sarasa is another common-type name included by PetMD. As with other single-tail forms, judge the fish by its actual body, tail and adult growth rather than by a juvenile’s size in a shop tank.

Fancy varieties

Fancy goldfish names describe a wide range of body and feature combinations. PetMD’s representative list includes fantail, ryukin, telescope, butterfly tail, pompom, lionhead, ranchu, celestial eye and bubble eye, as well as nymph, tamasaba and wakin. A separate PetMD care sheet also names oranda, black moor, pearlscale and tosakin.

Telescope varieties have protruding eyes. Their vision and eye surfaces need protection, so avoid sharp ornaments and use food that reaches them without forcing frantic competition. Practical Fishkeeping specifically suggests sinking pellets for telescope-eye fish.

Black moors are a dark, metallic example often described as having a velvet-like appearance. Their color can change with age and conditions, so identification should include their eye and body form rather than color alone.

Orandas are known for a prominent head growth. The size and shape of that growth differ among fish, which is why a photograph or color label is not enough for precise identification.

Fantails, ryukins, butterfly tails, pearlscales, ranchu, lionheads, bubble eyes, celestial eyes, pompoms, tosakins, wakins, nymphs and tamasabas are best assessed by the combination of body profile, tail or fin arrangement and any specialized feature. The names overlap in hobby usage, and the available sources do not establish one global scoring system for every trait.

How to identify a goldfish without relying on color

Color is the least reliable single identifier. Goldfish may be orange, red-and-white, yellow, white, black, blue-speckled or patterned, and the shade can change as the fish matures. Use several physical clues together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tail count and movement: a single tail and fast, direct swimming suggest a common-type fish; elaborate paired or flowing tails point toward a fancy form.
  • Body profile: a streamlined body usually leaves more room for efficient swimming, while a rounded or deep body needs easier turning space.
  • Eyes: protruding eyes identify telescope forms; other unusual eye arrangements, such as the celestial-eye type, require extra attention to feeding and decor.
  • Head features: a pronounced head growth is characteristic of an oranda; lionhead and ranchu are also named among fancy forms with specialized head and body profiles.
  • Pattern: blue-and-speckled markings are a common shubunkin clue, while a dark metallic, velvet-like appearance is associated with black moors.

When buying, photograph the whole fish from the side and above, note the tail and eye shape, and ask which variety the seller believes it is. Treat the answer as a practical identification, not proof of membership in a formal international registry.

Adult size and lifespan: plan for the fish you will have

PetMD’s June 21, 2024 care sheet gives an adult-size range of 1–18 inches, depending on type. Its general care guidance says some larger varieties may require 50–100 gallons. These figures are broad, source-specific estimates rather than a universal stocking formula. A juvenile in a small sales tank is not evidence that the same container will remain suitable.

Measure Reported figure Qualification
Typical lifespan 10–15 years PetMD general goldfish care article, updated March 26, 2024
Long life in excellent conditions Sometimes up to 20 years Same PetMD article; an upper possibility, not a promise
Exceptional report 30+ years PetMD’s separate 2024 care sheet describes this as possible with proper care
Adult length 1–18 inches PetMD care sheet, June 21, 2024; varies by type and conditions

Use the expected adult footprint when selecting the aquarium, filter and stand. If the seller cannot identify the variety, plan conservatively for a larger fish and upgrade as growth reveals the form.

Habitat requirements for every variety

Choose space before choosing a fish

PetMD’s care guidance gives about 20 gallons per fish in some situations and recommends at least a 20-gallon habitat for a single juvenile, with additional space as the fish grows. Its general article notes that larger varieties may need 50–100 gallons. Because those recommendations vary with fish, filtration and setup, use them as planning guidance rather than a universal minimum. Long single-tail fish benefit from length; round-bodied fancies need enough open area to turn without striking the glass or decor.

Filter for waste and oxygenation

Goldfish produce substantial waste relative to their body size. Use filtration sized for the actual adult bioload, maintain it regularly and keep open swimming space around the outlet. Strong, chaotic flow can exhaust slower fancy fish, while stagnant water allows waste to accumulate. Aim for effective circulation that the fish can navigate comfortably.

Make decor safe

Do not use gravel small enough for a goldfish to swallow. Remove sharp ornaments, especially in tanks housing telescope-eye fish, because protruding eyes can be injured. Leave a clear route for swimming and turning, and check that plants or decorations cannot trap a fish by its fins.

Water parameters and maintenance

Parameter or task PetMD 2024 guidance How to apply it
Temperature 65–75°F Use a reliable thermometer and avoid abrupt swings; treat this as general guidance, not an all-varieties guarantee.
pH 6.5–7.5 Test regularly and prioritize stability over chasing a number with sudden chemical changes.
Other tests Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, plus temperature and pH Test on a routine schedule and whenever fish behavior or water appearance changes.
Water changes Routine partial changes with conditioned replacement water Match replacement water to the aquarium’s temperature as closely as practical, remove uneaten food and avoid replacing all water at once because that can remove beneficial bacteria.

Stable, filtered water is more useful than a perfect-looking number measured once. Record results so gradual deterioration is visible before fish become stressed.

Feeding common and fancy goldfish

Feed a varied diet made for goldfish. PetMD lists flakes, pellets, frozen foods and freeze-dried foods, and advises against feeding the same food every day. Offer only what the fish can consume promptly, remove leftovers and adjust portions for body condition and growth.

Slow or visually impaired varieties may lose meals to faster tank mates. Sinking pellets are a practical choice for telescope-eye fish, according to Practical Fishkeeping, because the food does not remain at the surface where competition and swallowed air can be problems. Watch each fish eat rather than assuming that food placed in the tank has been shared evenly.

Swimming ability, tank mates and daily observation

Single-tail goldfish are generally more robust and faster than many fancy forms. Fancy fish with rounded bodies, unusual eyes or elaborate fins may tire sooner or have difficulty competing for food. Choose companions with similar swimming ability and feeding speed, and monitor the group during meals.

Observe breathing, posture, fin condition, appetite and buoyancy each day. A fish that suddenly hides, stops eating or struggles to reach food needs a water-quality check before you assume the variety itself is the cause. Specialized features increase vulnerability to injury, but they do not replace the need to test the aquarium.

Which fancy goldfish can I keep all year round in ponds?

There is no single yes-or-no list that applies worldwide. Practical Fishkeeping says pond suitability depends on the variety and local conditions. Research the fish’s history, consider winter temperatures and consult a local goldfish club or the Goldfish Society of Great Britain before moving a fish outdoors.

Do not move a shop-bought fancy goldfish into a pond simply because another goldfish survives outdoors nearby. A sheltered climate, depth, seasonal temperature range, predators and the fish’s swimming ability all matter. Single-tail forms are generally hardier, while delicate fancy forms may be poor choices where winter conditions are severe, but the decision must be made for the actual variety and location.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  1. Identify the form: record whether the fish is single-tailed or fancy, then note eye, head, tail and body features.
  2. Estimate adult needs: use the variety’s likely size, not the juvenile length, to choose aquarium volume and floor space.
  3. Prepare filtration: install and test the filter before adding fish, leaving enough open water for comfortable swimming.
  4. Make the interior safe: remove swallowable gravel and sharp objects; provide turning room, especially for round-bodied or telescope-eye fish.
  5. Test and condition water: monitor temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate; use conditioned replacement water for partial changes.
  6. Feed for the individual: vary foods, remove leftovers and confirm that slower or visually impaired fish are actually eating.
  7. Reassess as the fish grows: upgrade space and filtration when the body, waste production or swimming behavior shows that the original setup is no longer adequate.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Choosing by color alone: identify body, tail and eye features as well; color and pattern vary within a variety.
  • Keeping a large single-tail in a bowl: replace the bowl with a filtered aquarium sized for adult growth and swimming distance.
  • Mixing very different swimmers: separate or rearrange fish when a fancy variety cannot reach food or is being outpaced constantly.
  • Using dangerous substrate or ornaments: remove swallowable gravel and sharp pieces, with particular care around telescope eyes.
  • Replacing all the water: perform routine partial changes with conditioned water so beneficial bacteria are not discarded wholesale.
  • Assuming every fancy fish is pond-safe: evaluate variety, local winter conditions and outdoor risks before any move.

Goldfish care becomes predictable when the variety informs the setup. Identify the fish’s form, allow for adult size, maintain stable filtered water and adapt feeding and decor to its swimming ability and specialized features.
