Gourami and Betta Fish Compatibility: Can They Live Together?

Betta and gourami fish may become territorial or nip fins, so sharing a tank is generally not recommended. Separate aquariums are the safer choice.

Usually, no: keeping a betta and a gourami in the same aquarium is not recommended. Both can be territorial, and some gouramis may chase or nip a betta’s fins. Their temperaments vary, so conflict is not inevitable—but a peaceful start does not establish that the pairing is safe long term. If you want both fish, plan on separate, species-appropriate tanks.

Why can a betta and gourami be a risky pairing?

Both fish may defend territory

Aqueon describes male bettas as highly territorial and advises avoiding male gouramis as tankmates. Its broader betta guidance also lists gouramis among more aggressive fish that may not suit bettas. The concern can run in either direction: Seriously Fish describes dwarf gouramis as shy and territorial, and warns that some males may become very aggressive when another anabantoid, such as a betta, is introduced. Fin-nipping and stress are also concerns

Practical Fishkeeping cautions against mixing Betta splendens with other fish and notes that some species, including dwarf gouramis, may nibble long betta fins. A betta that is chased, nipped, or unable to retreat may become stressed. Aqueon recommends providing hiding places for a betta to retreat to, but cover is a welfare measure—not proof that the fish are compatible. Does a bigger tank make them compatible?

No tank size is established by these care sources as a reliable way to make a betta–gourami pairing safe. A larger aquarium may provide more room, but it does not remove the documented behavioral concerns. Aqueon’s advice to avoid male gouramis with bettas still applies; do not treat an upgrade, plants, or a divider as a guarantee.

“Gourami” covers fish with different adult sizes and care needs. Aqueon recommends 10 gallons for some smaller gouramis, at least 30 gallons for several commonly sold larger types, and substantially more for kissing and giant gouramis. These are species-dependent husbandry recommendations, not compatibility thresholds for adding a betta. Check the requirements for the exact gourami species and the complete adult stocking plan. Aqueon’s Gouramis Care Guide.

What should you do if you want to keep both?

Use separate, suitable aquariums. Choose the gourami tank around its species and expected adult stocking rather than buying one tank size for “gouramis” in general. For a separate gourami setup, Aqueon recommends a secure lid and surface plants or other cover; it also notes that a heater may be needed when the room is below 75°F. Those setup measures support appropriate care but do not make co-housing safe. Aqueon’s Gouramis Care Guide.

Aqueon recommends hiding places for a betta, too, so it can retreat if stressed. A divider should not be assumed to be a dependable long-term solution: the available care guidance does not establish that a generic partition safely houses a betta and gourami together. What if they are already in the same tank?

If one fish is chasing or nipping the other, or either appears unable to retreat, separate them promptly rather than waiting for an injury. Move them into independent, properly equipped housing; do not rely on a period of apparent calm as evidence that the arrangement will remain safe. The risk guidance is husbandry advice, not a controlled test of every individual pair, and there is no established aggression or injury rate for all betta–gourami combinations.
