It’s a relatable moment, not evidence that Great Danes are especially afraid of rain: the available guidance discusses rain reluctance in dogs generally, and does not establish a breed-specific tendency.
Why might a dog hesitate to go out in light rain?
Rain can feel unpleasant when it hits a dog’s coat, makes the ground wet, or comes with a chill. That ordinary discomfort may be enough to make a dog pause at the door. The sources cited here do not identify a particular cause for this Great Dane’s reaction.
A brief reluctance to step into drizzle is also different from a broader fear response. A dog that is simply avoiding wet weather may need a more comfortable, low-pressure bathroom break. Signs such as panting, pacing, hiding, or clinginess around storms may point to storm-related anxiety instead.
How to make a rainy bathroom break easier
Keep the outing short and go along
For a necessary potty break, go outside with your dog, keep the trip calm and brief, and reward toileting. Vetstreet recommends going out with the dog and rewarding success rather than leaving the dog outdoors until it goes. A sheltered spot or a route protected from wind and rain may help; sharing an umbrella is another option if your dog is comfortable with it.

Consider a coat only if your dog tolerates it
A properly fitted, water-resistant raincoat may make wet weather more comfortable for some dogs. Fit matters: the coat should not restrict movement or cause discomfort, and it is not a treatment for fear. Choose coverage and a design suitable for your dog’s body, but let the dog’s comfort and willingness to wear it guide whether it is useful.
Introduce rainy weather and clothing gradually
If your dog is wary, use rewards and gradual exposure rather than forcing a long walk or confronting the fear head-on. Cornell behavior guidance quotes Dr. Pamela J. Perry: “Owners should never force a dog to confront fears head-on.” Perry also advises increasing exposure only as the dog becomes more confident, and only at a level that does not trigger a fear response.

If the hesitation is specifically about getting wet, a short, sheltered bathroom trip may be enough. If your dog shows signs such as panting, pacing, hiding, or clinginess around storms—or the fear is difficult to manage—ask a veterinarian for advice. Do not force prolonged exposure while trying to make the dog tolerate the weather.
