Green-Eyed Cats: What Their Eye Color Means—and When to Call a Vet

Green eyes are a normal feline variation and do not identify a breed. Learn how to distinguish stable eye color from changes that need veterinary attention.

Green eyes are a natural variation in cats, not proof of a particular breed or a sign of illness by themselves. Both purebred and mixed-breed cats can have them. What matters medically is a new change: cloudiness, a change in iris color, pupils that look different in size, or squinting should prompt veterinary attention.

How do cats get green eyes?

Genetics influences a cat’s eye color. Green eyes occur in both purebred and mixed-breed cats, so the color alone cannot establish pedigree. The veterinarian-reviewed Catster overview associates green eyes with Russian Blue cats, but that association does not mean every green-eyed cat is a Russian Blue.

Are green eyes common in cats?

Green is not described as the most common feline eye color in the veterinarian-reviewed Catster account. That is a qualitative description, not a measured prevalence: the source does not provide a population study or a dependable percentage. A related Catster article describes yellow or gold and amber as common, followed by hazel (green-gold), but it likewise does not establish numerical frequencies. Treat these descriptions as broad editorial characterizations, not statistics.

Does a cat’s green eye color mean it is sick?

A stable green eye color, on its own, is a normal variation rather than evidence of illness. The important distinction is between an eye that has looked the same over time and a newly noticed change in an adult cat. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause of an abnormality, so have a veterinarian assess a new change rather than trying to diagnose it from color.

Which eye changes should prompt a vet call?

Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises watching for a change in iris color, cloudiness, pupils that differ in size, and squinting. Its guidance describes healthy feline eyes as bright and clear, with pupils of equal size and no squinting. If you notice one of these signs, contact a veterinarian promptly for advice and assessment.

Early diagnosis can improve treatment prospects for vision problems, according to Cornell. Some damage may already be irreversible by the time it is noticed; Cornell notes that retinal detachment may sometimes be treated to restore partial vision, while permanent blindness can result in many cases. These are general clinical cautions, not a diagnosis of an individual cat.
