Plan around your priorities: mix nearby Kanab-area stops with selected park or public-land trips, and check permits, road conditions, seasonal services, and lodging before setting out.
What is there to do in Kanab and nearby?
Kanab combines small-town attractions with access to parks, public lands, and desert landscapes. Nearby options include Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Kodachrome Basin State Park, Grosvenor Arch, Cottonwood Canyon, Bull Valley Gorge, Buckskin Gulch, and Pipe Spring National Monument. In town, visitors can consider Moqui Cave, the Little Hollywood Museum, and Parry Lodge.

Is Kanab a good base for Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the North Rim?
Yes, if you want to explore several parts of Southern Utah from one base and are comfortable with substantial day trips. Kane County tourism gives approximate distances from Kanab of 40 miles to Zion National Park to the west, 70 miles to Bryce Canyon National Park to the north, 80 miles to the Grand Canyon North Rim to the south, and 60 miles to Lake Powell/Glen Canyon National Recreation Area to the east. These are geographic distances, not drive-time estimates. The route, destination access, and road conditions can make a day out longer than the distance suggests.

For your own plan, choose the farthest or most important destinations first, group outings geographically, and leave room for local activities and changes in weather or access. A shorter trip can focus on Kanab and nearby attractions; a broader regional itinerary needs more days and flexibility.
Where should you stay near Kanab?
Kanab has hotels, motels, and boutique stays. Other bases may make sense depending on where you plan to spend your time: East Zion or Mount Carmel for a quieter stay near that area, Duck Creek Village for higher-country lodging and Bryce access, or Big Water for Lake Powell access. Cabins, campgrounds, and glamping are among the available stay formats.

Access to The Wave in North Coyote Buttes is limited and requires a day-use permit. Permit procedures can change, so check current official entry information before travel. Peek-a-boo Slot Canyon
Utah’s tourism page places Peek-a-boo Slot Canyon about nine miles north of Kanab along Highway 89. It says four-wheel drive is required and strongly recommends a local guide. Verify current route and access conditions, weather, and tour arrangements directly before making plans.

Can you drive a regular car on Grand Staircase–Escalante roads?
Some access is possible in a two-wheel-drive car under dry conditions, but the answer depends on the route and weather. Visit Utah says nearly all monument trailheads are reachable by two-wheel-drive cars in dry weather, while recommending four-wheel drive for travel off pavement. Roads range from well-graded dirt to rocky or sandy tracks, so “accessible” does not mean every road is suitable for every vehicle.
Hole in the Rock Road is a more demanding case: the same guidance says this 55-mile route requires four-wheel drive and substantial preparation. Do not treat it as equivalent to an ordinary trailhead approach.
How to prepare for remote roads and changing weather
Grand Staircase–Escalante is remote. Rain can make clay roads slippery and impassable, while flash floods can damage roads or leave debris. Avoid unpaved roads when wet, and ask local BLM offices or visitor centers about current conditions before departure. The monument is open year-round, but nearby services can be limited in winter; confirm visitor-center and road status close to your trip. Visit Utah recommends preparing for delays or being stranded on remote roads. Its checklist includes:
- A full fuel tank, ample water, and food.
- A tow rope or chain, tool kit, jumper cables, duct tape, tire pump, and shovel.
- Stove fuel and matches.
These supplies do not make an unsuitable route safe or a wet road passable. Choose a route and vehicle appropriate to conditions, and check access before you go.
