Hammerhead sharks are not one species but a family, Sphyrnidae, whose members differ in head shape, size, habitat, diet and conservation status. The best-known examples include scalloped, smooth and bonnethead sharks. Here are 10 evidence-based facts, with each claim tied to the species or population it actually describes.
1. “Hammerhead shark” names a family, not a single animal
The family Sphyrnidae includes several distinct sharks. NOAA Fisheries’ identification material specifically covers the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) and bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo). Treating a measurement or behavior from one of these as a fact about every hammerhead leads to mistakes.

The animals share a laterally expanded head, called a cephalofoil, but the outline is not identical across species. A reliable description should therefore name the species whenever it gives a size, range, diet, breeding detail or legal category. NOAA’s shark identification guide is useful for separating the common forms.

| Species | Head outline described by NOAA |
|---|---|
| Scalloped hammerhead | A prominent indentation in the center of the front edge |
| Smooth hammerhead | The front edge lacks a central indentation |
| Bonnethead | A shovel-shaped outline |
These features are identification clues, not a complete explanation of why the head evolved in that form. The cited NOAA profiles document the shapes but do not establish a single, fully demonstrated account of the cephalofoil’s evolutionary or sensory advantages. Claims that assign one definitive function should therefore be presented as hypotheses rather than settled fact.
How to identify one without overclaiming
- Look at the entire front edge rather than judging a photograph by the broadness of the head alone.
- Check for a central notch: a pronounced one supports scalloped hammerhead identification, while a smooth edge supports smooth hammerhead identification.
- Compare the outline with a trusted guide and record the location, depth and date of the observation; juvenile shapes and viewing angles can make field identification harder.
3. Scalloped hammerheads range through warm seas worldwide
NOAA describes scalloped hammerheads in warm temperate and tropical seas around the world. They occur in both coastal and offshore settings across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific regions. “Worldwide” here refers to that broad species range, not to every hammerhead species occupying every ocean or coastline.
The range explains why a scalloped hammerhead can appear in very different regional fisheries and management systems. A sighting near shore does not by itself establish a local resident population; the species also uses offshore waters, and movement patterns vary with life stage and location.
4. Hammerheads vary dramatically in size
For scalloped hammerheads, NOAA lists a maximum length of 11 feet, a maximum weight of 335 pounds and a lifespan of up to 30 years. These are recorded upper limits for that species, not typical measurements for the family. A large scalloped hammerhead should not be used as a proxy for the much smaller bonnethead.

Size also affects vulnerability. A shark that grows slowly and takes years to mature can be removed from a population faster than it is replaced, even when occasional large adults are still seen. That life-history issue is central to interpreting conservation concerns.
5. Bonnetheads are the family’s smallest members
NOAA identifies bonnetheads as the smallest hammerhead sharks. They are warm, shallow-water coastal animals rather than the open-ocean stereotype many people associate with large sharks.
The NOAA profile gives bonnetheads a maximum length of 5 feet and a heaviest recorded weight of 24 pounds. Those figures are species-specific maxima. Their smaller size does not make them ecologically unimportant: shallow coastal habitats provide feeding and nursery areas where changes in water quality or vegetation can affect local populations.
6. Adult bonnetheads can show a sex-linked head shape
In bonnetheads, mature females develop an evenly rounded head, while mature males develop a central bulge. This is a documented feature of adult bonnetheads, not a rule for all hammerhead species. Age and sex should therefore be considered before using head shape as an identification shortcut.

When recording a photograph or observation, note whether the animal appears mature and whether sex is known. A central bulge in a mature bonnethead does not turn it into a different species, and the absence of that bulge does not by itself identify a juvenile or a female without other evidence.
7. Bonnetheads eat plants as well as animals
Bonnetheads are documented omnivores. Their diet includes fish, crabs, snails and shrimp, and they also graze on seagrass. That combination is unusual enough to be one of the family’s most memorable species-specific facts.
It should not be generalized to all hammerheads. The available profiles do not establish that scalloped or smooth hammerheads routinely graze seagrass, so a statement such as “hammerhead sharks are omnivores” is too broad. For bonnetheads, however, seagrass feeding connects diet directly to the condition of shallow coastal habitats.
8. Several hammerheads give birth to live young
Hammerheads include live-bearing species. NOAA’s population-assessment material identifies hammerheads among sharks with viviparity, and its scalloped hammerhead profile describes adult females moving inshore to give birth. Young scalloped hammerheads remain inshore early in life. Bonnetheads also give birth to live pups.

For bonnetheads, NOAA reports four to 14 pups per litter and an approximately five-month gestation period. Those figures apply to bonnetheads, not automatically to scalloped, smooth or other hammerheads. Live birth also does not mean that every species uses the same season, nursery or movement pattern.
Why live birth matters for population recovery
Live-bearing sharks generally produce fewer young at a time than many bony fishes. When adults are caught before reproducing, or when juveniles lose protected shallow habitat, the reduction can affect recruitment for years. This is why a short-term rise in sightings should not be interpreted as proof that a population has recovered.

NOAA identifies bays, mangroves and other shallow areas as breeding or nursery habitat for scalloped hammerheads. Adult females move inshore to give birth, and young sharks use these areas during their early life stages.

Nurseries are productive but exposed. Habitat change, storm runoff, sedimentation and declining nursery productivity can reduce shelter or prey availability. A coastal project can therefore affect hammerheads even when no fishing occurs inside the project footprint, because water quality and food-web changes travel through the connected estuary.

What a healthy nursery provides
- Shallow water where young sharks can feed and avoid some larger predators.
- Seagrass, mangrove or bay habitats that support prey and provide structural complexity.
- Water-quality conditions that keep prey populations and early growth on track.
- Connectivity between inshore nursery areas and the broader coastal range used by adults.
10. Fishing pressure and slow growth make conservation difficult
NOAA identifies bycatch, overfishing and commercial fishing pressure—including pressure associated with the shark-fin trade—as major threats to scalloped hammerheads. The species’ slow growth and late maturity make recovery especially challenging: removing breeding adults can have effects long after the original catch.
Threats differ by fishery and region. A legal status or management action that applies in one population segment cannot be assumed to describe every hammerhead worldwide. There is also no single global population total or family-wide decline percentage established in the cited official material, so precise worldwide trend numbers should not be invented.
What “endangered” means for hammerheads
Conservation status depends on both the species and the population unit being assessed. NOAA lists the Eastern Pacific and Eastern Atlantic distinct population segments of scalloped hammerheads as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. It lists the Central and Southwest Atlantic and Indo-West Pacific segments as threatened.

International trade rules add another layer. NOAA says scalloped, great and smooth hammerheads are listed in CITES Appendix II. Appendix II regulates international trade so it does not become incompatible with survival; it does not automatically mean that every listed species is classified as threatened with extinction, and it is not a blanket status for every hammerhead population.
How to read a conservation claim
- Check the species name: “hammerhead” alone is not precise enough.
- Check the population segment or geographic region.
- Check the legal framework, such as the U.S. Endangered Species Act or CITES.
- Check the date of the assessment, because listings and management rules can change.
Quick comparison of the best-known species
| Feature | Scalloped hammerhead | Smooth hammerhead | Bonnethead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head outline | Prominent central indentation | No central indentation | Shovel-shaped; mature females rounded and mature males bulged |
| Habitat description in the cited profiles | Warm temperate and tropical seas; coastal and offshore | Identification feature documented; the cited material does not provide a comparable range summary | Warm, shallow coastal waters |
| Species-specific biology highlighted | Females move inshore to give birth; juveniles remain inshore early in life | The cited material emphasizes identification rather than the life-history figures shown here | Omnivorous diet; live pups; four to 14 pups and about five months’ gestation |
| Maximum figures supplied by NOAA | Up to 11 feet, 335 pounds and 30 years | The cited material does not provide a comparable maximum in this article’s source set | Up to 5 feet and 24 pounds |
The comparison is intentionally species-specific. A field guide such as NOAA’s cooperative shark identification resource can help confirm visual features, while NOAA’s profiles provide the biological and regulatory context.
Bottom line for identifying and protecting hammerheads
Remember the family name Sphyrnidae, then name the species before attaching a fact to it. Scalloped hammerheads are wide-ranging and dependent on vulnerable coastal nurseries; bonnetheads are the smallest, shallow-water members and are documented omnivores; smooth hammerheads are distinguished by a smooth front edge without the scalloped central indentation. Fishing pressure, slow life histories and habitat change all matter, while legal status must be read by population segment and regulatory system rather than reduced to a single label.
