No confirmed public record has been found of a pacu caught in Lake Smart, Florida. Pacu have been documented elsewhere in the state, so a sighting is possible, but the available Lake Smart fishing, monitoring, advisory, and public species records do not verify one.
No confirmed Lake Smart pacu catch has been found
There is no reliable public record showing that a pacu has been caught in Lake Smart in Winter Haven, Florida. That conclusion means no lake-specific news report, official catch record, fisheries database entry, or indexed angler report was found—not that it is impossible that someone has caught or seen one there without reporting it.

Pacu have been documented elsewhere in Florida, and an aquarium release is a plausible way for one to enter a connected lake. However, the available evidence does not verify a pacu sighting, catch, established population, or breeding population in Lake Smart.
What the Lake Smart records show
Lake Smart is a public lake of approximately 264 acres and part of Winter Haven’s Northern Chain of Lakes. The Polk County Water Atlas says it connects to Lake Conine through a west-side canal and has another connection to Lake Fannie that can be shallow or unusable at times. Those waterways provide possible movement routes for fish, but no source establishes that a pacu used them.

The Water Atlas also documents extensive monitoring at Lake Smart, including 22 water-quality sampling locations, six hydrologic sampling locations, and more than 72,000 samples. Monitoring activity is not the same as a complete fish census, but the publicly available lake records located for this question do not identify pacu. Fishing and advisory information
- A FishAngler page contains only two logged catches and lists largemouth black bass as the most-caught species in its limited user data. It does not show a pacu catch. These app records are not a biological survey and cannot prove that pacu are absent.
- A 2019 Florida fish-consumption advisory document includes Lake Smart entries for bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, and black crappie, but not pacu. An advisory table is not intended to be a complete species inventory, so this omission is useful supporting evidence but not proof of absence.
- A 2020 vegetation assessment reported an impaired Lake Vegetation Index score and described aquatic plant communities, but did not report pacu.
Lake Smart has also been the subject of a May 2023 blue-green algae health alert. That notice concerned water-contact precautions and fish-consumption handling during an algae bloom; it was not evidence for or against the presence of pacu. Anyone visiting the lake should check current health notices rather than relying on an old alert. The public fishing record and advisory sources are FishAngler’s Lake Smart page and the 2019 Florida fish-consumption advisory.
Could a pacu be in a Florida lake?
Yes. Pacu are South American freshwater characins related to piranhas, although they are distinct fish. UF/IFAS identifies pacu—including fish in the genus Colossoma—among freshwater ornamental fish cultured in Florida. Some pacu can exceed 400 millimeters, or roughly 16 inches, in length. A large, deep-bodied fish in a Florida canal or lake can therefore be a pacu, but size and body shape alone are not enough for a reliable identification.

Florida has documented nonnative pacu records. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database records a 1988 specimen from a diversion canal near Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County. It was identified as tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum; the fish had initially been identified as a black pacu, and the likely pathway was an aquarium release. The record is evidence that pacu have occurred in Florida, not that one was found in Lake Smart. See the USGS specimen record for the details.
WLRN also reported on a 27-pound pacu associated with an aquarium and the Loxahatchee River Center in Jupiter. That story demonstrates how large pacu can become in Florida and how aquarium-related fish may end up in public-facing aquatic settings. It does not connect the fish to Lake Smart.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says escape or release by pet owners is the most common pathway for exotic fish and wildlife to enter Florida habitats. That makes an isolated sighting in a connected central-Florida lake biologically plausible. It still does not turn an unverified possibility into a documented Lake Smart catch. FWC’s background and reporting information is available on its nonnative species page.
Why “no record” is not the same as “never happened”
The evidence supports a careful answer, not an absolute one. A private angler may catch a fish and never post it. A photograph may be mislabeled, unavailable to search engines, or shared only in a local group. User-generated fishing apps may contain very few records, and official consumption-advisory lists do not attempt to catalog every fish species in a lake.

It would be inaccurate to say that there has never been a pacu in Lake Smart. It would also be inaccurate to describe Lake Smart as having a pacu population. No evidence located for this article shows reproduction, persistence, repeated catches, or an established population there.

How to verify a future Lake Smart pacu claim
If someone reports catching a pacu in Lake Smart, the claim is much more useful when accompanied by evidence that allows independent identification and location checking:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Preserve the original photograph or video. Avoid relying on a compressed screenshot or a repost with no date information.
- Record the exact location. Note the lake, nearby shoreline landmark, canal, ramp, or GPS position. “Winter Haven” alone is not enough because the Northern Chain contains multiple connected lakes.
- Record the date and conditions. Include the capture date, approximate time, waterbody, and whether the fish was caught, found dead, or merely observed.
- Measure the fish if it can be done safely. Total length, approximate weight, and clear side and head photographs are more useful than a size estimate.
- Do not identify it from a casual comparison alone. Pacu can be confused with piranha and other deep-bodied fish. A fisheries biologist or other qualified fish expert should confirm an unusual record when possible.
- Report a suspected nonnative fish through FWC’s current channels. Use the agency’s current instructions rather than releasing the fish or moving it to another body of water.
Do not transport or release a suspected nonnative fish into another Florida waterway. FWC says most nonnative fish should be harvested rather than released, and Florida law generally prohibits releasing or introducing nonnative freshwater fish without the required authorization. Rules and exemptions can change, so anglers should check the current FWC freshwater-fishing regulations before fishing or handling an unusual catch. A freshwater fishing license is generally required to take or attempt to take native or nonnative freshwater fish, subject to applicable exemptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about Lake Smart’s other environmental notices?
Lake Smart’s monitoring history and environmental notices can be relevant to safe recreation, but they do not answer the pacu question by themselves. The Water Atlas’s long-term records, including a displayed sample date of May 11, 2026, document water-quality and hydrologic sampling rather than a complete inventory of fish. Similarly, the 2023 blue-green algae alert addressed risks from water contact and consuming or handling fish during a bloom—not the identity or presence of unusual fish.
These distinctions matter: a lake can be heavily monitored for water quality while still lacking a comprehensive, publicly searchable record of every fish caught there.
Bottom line
No reliable public evidence currently verifies that a pacu has been caught in Lake Smart, Florida. Pacu are known from other parts of Florida, commonly in circumstances linked to aquarium fish, so an isolated sighting is possible. But the Lake Smart-specific fishing records, advisory information, monitoring material, and public databases reviewed do not establish a catch or a resident pacu population.
