The central Havanese ownership trade-off is simple: this breed is adaptable and trainable, but it needs regular human involvement and coat care. Its small size may suit apartment living, but apartment suitability does not mean the dog can be left alone for long periods or ignored between grooming appointments.

Havanese history and identity

Although the Havanese is classified in the Toy Group, it is not an especially delicate-looking toy breed. The official standard describes a sturdy, slightly longer-than-tall dog with springy movement and a plumed tail carried arched over the back. Historical accounts also suggest that the breed was more physically capable around the household than its companion-dog role might imply. Stories about individual Havanese herding or swimming should be treated as historical background, not as guaranteed behaviors in every modern dog.
The AKC recognized the Havanese in 1996. The official breed standard places substantial emphasis on more than appearance: a friendly, playful, intelligent, sweet, and non-quarrelsome disposition, along with the breed’s characteristic coat, structure, and gait, are all part of Havanese type.
What does a Havanese look like?
A typical Havanese is small but solidly built, with a body that is slightly longer than it is tall. The breed has a lively, springy gait rather than a stiff or mincing one. Its tail is feathered and normally arches over the back.
The coat is one of the breed’s most recognizable features. It is long, soft, and silky, and may grow in a variety of colors and patterns. Under the official standard, the coat is kept long and untrimmed for the show ring and may be presented brushed or corded. Show presentation is intended to look natural rather than heavily sculpted.
Companion dogs do not have to maintain a show-length coat. Many owners choose a shorter trim to reduce daily grooming time. A short trim makes tangles easier to manage, but it does not eliminate brushing, bathing, nail care, or routine checks of the ears, eyes, and skin.
Havanese temperament
Havanese are generally cheerful, bright, affectionate, and eager to participate in family life. They often prefer staying near their people and tend to do best with owners who want a close companion rather than a highly independent dog.
The breed is usually alert without being defined by nonstop barking. A Havanese may bark to announce a visitor, an unfamiliar sound, or activity outside the home. Early, appropriate exposure to people and everyday situations can help a puppy become more comfortable with novelty, while training can teach useful quiet and attention behaviors.

Breed tendencies are not guarantees. Genetics, early rearing, socialization, training, health, and the household environment all influence an individual dog. The official standard faults aggression and shyness, but a prospective owner should still assess the temperament of the particular puppy and its parents rather than relying only on the breed label.
Are Havanese good family dogs?
A Havanese may suit a family, couple, or individual who wants a small, affectionate dog and is prepared to supervise interactions and teach both the dog and the household how to behave safely. Children should be taught not to carry, corner, grab, or disturb a small dog, and play should be supervised. The breed’s generally social reputation does not mean every Havanese is automatically comfortable with every child.
Havanese can often live successfully with other dogs or cats when introductions are gradual and appropriately managed. However, compatibility depends on the individuals involved. Do not choose a puppy on the assumption that it will automatically be good with children, cats, or every other dog.
Exercise and enrichment needs
The Havanese has moderate exercise needs. A brisk daily walk, interactive play, indoor games, short training sessions, and age-appropriate mental stimulation can provide useful activity. Puzzle toys, trick training, scent games, obedience, rally, and agility-style activities can all give this intelligent companion an appropriate job.

More exercise is not always better. Activity should be adjusted for age, physical condition, weather, and the dog’s ability to keep up. Puppies, older dogs, dogs recovering from illness, and dogs in hot or humid weather may need shorter or less strenuous sessions. The AKC specifically cautions owners against over-exercising a Havanese.
For this breed, companionship is as important as physical exercise. A Havanese may adapt well to an apartment or smaller home if it receives walks, play, training, attention, and regular outings. It is not a good fit for a schedule that routinely leaves the dog alone for extended stretches. Alone-time skills should be taught gradually rather than assuming the dog will simply adjust.
Havanese grooming requirements
Grooming is the most significant routine-care commitment for many Havanese owners. A long coat needs frequent—often daily—brushing and combing to reduce mats and tangles. Work gently and methodically, parting the coat so you can check close to the skin rather than brushing only the visible top layer.

For a long-coated Havanese, a useful starting setup is a Havanese grooming brush, such as a gentle pin brush or soft slicker brush, paired with a metal comb. The brush helps work through the coat, while a stainless-steel dog comb can reveal tangles that remain close to the skin after brushing. Look for comfortable handling and tools appropriate for fine, silky hair; no generic brush prevents every mat, and a tool should never be used roughly or forced through a painful knot.
Owners should also expect the following care:
- Bathing: Bathe occasionally as needed, using dog-appropriate products and considering the dog’s individual skin condition.
- Eye-area care: Clean the corners of the eyes carefully when needed. Light-colored facial hair may show tear staining, but staining can have several causes and should not automatically be treated as a cosmetic-only issue.
- Ear checks: Inspect the ears for excess wax, debris, odor, redness, or discomfort. Clean only as advised by a veterinary professional.
- Nail trimming: Keep nails at a practical length. All dogs need routine nail care, whether it is done at home or by a groomer.
- Professional grooming: Arrange professional help if the coat is difficult to maintain, the dog becomes distressed, or mats develop close to the skin.
A short clip can make home maintenance more manageable, but it remains a maintenance style rather than a way to eliminate grooming. A basic small-dog grooming kit can be useful for a new owner if it contains genuinely suitable components—a gentle brush, comb, nail trimmer, and basic bathing supplies. A kit does not replace learning safe handling, professional grooming when necessary, or veterinary care for skin, ear, or eye problems.
The Havanese should not be described as hypoallergenic. A coat that sheds less visibly, or a dog that is sometimes marketed as low-shedding, does not guarantee that an allergy sufferer will have no symptoms.
Training and socialization
Havanese are intelligent and often eager to please, making relationship-based training a strong fit. They can also be sensitive. Harsh corrections, intimidation, and punitive handling may damage trust or make learning less effective. Use positive reinforcement, clear boundaries, short sessions, consistency, and fair expectations.
Early socialization should gradually introduce a puppy to appropriate people, healthy and suitably vaccinated animals, household sounds, different surfaces, handling, grooming tools, car journeys, and ordinary routines. The goal is not to overwhelm the puppy with exposure; it is to create calm, positive experiences at a manageable pace.

Puppy kindergarten or a well-run basic obedience class can help with skills and confidence. Begin house-training patiently and establish a predictable routine. Because Havanese often want to be with their owners, teach alone-time skills early: start with brief, successful separations and increase duration gradually. Do not promise that every Havanese will be easy to house-train or free from separation-related behavior.
Havanese health considerations
The Havanese is generally considered a healthy, fairly long-lived breed, but no breed or individual dog is free of health risk. Conditions discussed by the AKC and Havanese Club of America include:

These are breed-associated concerns to discuss with a veterinarian and breeder, not a prediction that a particular Havanese will develop them. Ask your veterinarian about preventive care, weight management, dental care, vaccination, parasite control, and any signs that warrant examination.
Health testing when buying from a breeder
For breeding dogs, Havanese Club of America materials emphasize annual CAER eye certification and OFA hip and patella evaluations. The AKC breed information also identifies patella, hip, and ophthalmologist evaluations among recommended health tests.

Ask to see the actual records for both parents, not just a statement such as “healthy parents.” Results should be publicly verifiable where applicable, and a responsible breeder should explain any abnormal findings rather than hiding behind a registry name or certificate number.
A CHIC number has a specific but limited meaning. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals explains that CHIC requirements are tailored to each breed and can change as health priorities and screening methods change. A CHIC number indicates that the required tests were performed and the results were made public; it does not mean every result was normal or guarantee that the dog’s offspring will never develop disease. Review the underlying results and discuss the puppy’s preventive-care plan with your own veterinarian.
The Havanese Club of America’s 2012 health survey may offer historical context about reported health concerns and screening, but it should not be presented as current prevalence data. It is more than a decade old and reflects respondent information rather than a current population-wide estimate.
Questions to ask a Havanese breeder
- Can you provide the sire’s and dam’s actual health-testing records?
- Are annual CAER eye results available where applicable?
- Are OFA hip and patella evaluations available?
- Are the results publicly verifiable, and will you explain any abnormal findings?
- How are puppies socialized to handling, grooming, household sounds, visitors, and short periods of separation?
- What grooming style do the adult dogs maintain, and what routine will this puppy require?
- What veterinary care has the puppy received, and what preventive-care schedule does the breeder recommend?
- What support and return-to-breeder provisions are included in the contract?

It is a sociable, intelligent companion whose quality of life depends on regular interaction, humane training, coat care, and thoughtful health decisions. Frequently Asked Questions
Are Havanese good apartment dogs?
Yes, potentially. Havanese are small and adaptable, and moderate walks, indoor play, training, and enrichment can meet their activity needs. They still need daily attention and should not routinely be left alone for extended periods.
How much grooming does a Havanese need?
A long Havanese coat can require daily brushing and combing to prevent mats and tangles. A shorter trim reduces the amount of coat to work through but does not eliminate brushing, bathing, nail care, or inspections.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Are Havanese good with children and other pets?
Havanese are generally affectionate, social, and eager to interact, but individual temperament varies. Children and dogs should be supervised, and introductions to children, cats, and other pets should be gradual and appropriate.
How much exercise does a Havanese need?
They have moderate exercise needs. Daily walks, interactive play, indoor games, and short training sessions are usually more appropriate than strenuous endurance exercise. Activity should be adjusted for age, health, weather, and fitness.
Are Havanese hypoallergenic?
No. A low-shedding or less visibly shedding coat does not guarantee that an allergy sufferer will have no symptoms. Allergy-sensitive households should spend time with the individual dog and consult a medical professional as needed.
What health tests should a Havanese breeder provide?
Ask for actual records for the parents, including applicable annual CAER eye certification and OFA hip and patella evaluations. Review the underlying results rather than relying on phrases such as “healthy parents.” A CHIC number shows that required tests were performed and made public; it is not a guarantee of normal health.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose a Havanese if you want a people-oriented small companion and can commit to daily interaction, positive training, and regular coat care. Look beyond the breed’s friendly image: responsible ownership includes gradual alone-time training, supervised introductions, documented breeder health testing, and a grooming routine that works for your household.
