Lifelong health depends on measured, complete nutrition; obesity prevention without underfeeding; secure, temperature-appropriate housing; daily rooting and exercise; pig-experienced veterinary care; and routine hoof, dental, parasite, and biosecurity management.
How long do potbellied pigs live?
A well-cared-for potbellied pig may live approximately 14 to 21 years, with many healthy individuals reaching about 15 to 18 years. That makes a pig a long-term commitment comparable to, or longer than, many dogs. Lifespan depends on genetics, adult size, nutrition, weight control, housing, preventive veterinary care, dental and hoof care, and how quickly illness is treated.

There is no reliable “teacup” size guarantee. A piglet that fits comfortably in your arms may grow for approximately two to three years or longer, and adult size varies considerably. Responsible care means planning for a strong, intelligent adult animal—not buying equipment or choosing housing based on a piglet’s current size.
The most important longevity decisions are straightforward: feed a complete mini-pig diet in measured portions, prevent obesity without underfeeding, provide safe exercise and rooting activities, arrange care with a veterinarian experienced in pigs, and treat changes in appetite, breathing, movement, digestion, or behavior as potentially important.

Adult size: why “teacup pig” promises are unreliable
“Teacup pig” is a marketing term, not a standardized size or breed category. Modern pet miniature pigs have diverse ancestry, including potbellied pigs crossed with other miniature and sometimes larger swine. Two piglets sold under the same label can mature into very different-sized adults.
Genetics are the biggest influence. The adult size of the parents—and, ideally, grandparents—is more useful than a seller’s estimate based on the piglet’s current weight. Even then, a precise adult weight or height cannot be guaranteed. Miniature pigs may continue growing until roughly two or three years old or beyond.
Do not intentionally restrict a growing pig’s food to keep it unnaturally small. Nutritional stunting can cause malnutrition, poor development, and other health problems. A pig can be small because of genetics, but it should not be made small through starvation. Ask to see adult relatives when possible, plan for a larger animal, and make sure local zoning, fencing, flooring, and veterinary resources are suitable before bringing home a pig.
Nutrition: feed for health, not maximum smallness
Use a complete mini-pig diet
Feed a nutritionally complete food formulated for miniature pigs and appropriate for the pig’s life stage and activity level. Commercial diets may include separate formulas for youth, active adults, and mature or less-active pigs. A complete mini-pig diet is a better foundation than trying to construct a diet from table scraps, fruit, vegetables, or a generic livestock ration.
When comparing mini pig food, look for a complete life-stage formula and review the choice with your pig’s veterinarian. No single brand or formula is ideal for every pig: the correct amount and life-stage transition depend on body condition, growth, activity, other foods, environmental temperature, and health.
Measure portions
One manufacturer’s general starting guideline for an active-adult miniature-pig diet is approximately 1% to 2% of body weight per day, divided into two meals. This is not a universal prescription. Use the product’s label as a starting point, measure the ration rather than estimating by eye, and have a veterinarian help assess whether the pig is underweight, at an ideal weight, or overweight.
Count everything the pig eats as part of the daily intake:

Many pigs have an intense appetite and will continue searching for food even after eating enough. Begging is not a reliable sign that more food is needed. Multiple measured meals, low-calorie vegetables when appropriate, and food-based enrichment can help satisfy normal foraging behavior without continuously adding calories.
Prevent obesity without crash dieting
Weight management is one of the most important ways to protect a pig’s quality of life. Excess weight increases stress on joints and is associated with degenerative arthritis. An overweight pig may also struggle to exercise, groom itself, or reach food and water comfortably.

Ask your veterinarian to evaluate body condition and create a gradual weight-loss plan if necessary. Do not sharply reduce food, withhold essential nutrients, or try to make a growing pig smaller. Extremely small or obese miniature pigs may have shortened lives.
Provide water continuously
Fresh, clean water should always be available. Requirements vary with age, diet, temperature, illness, and reproductive status. Never restrict water as a routine weight-control method. A sudden increase or decrease in drinking is a reason to contact a veterinarian, particularly when it occurs with changes in urination, appetite, energy, or weight.

Housing: secure the home and control temperature
Indoor safety
Potbellied pigs are strong, curious rooting animals. They can open cabinets, move objects, investigate electrical cords, and swallow items that seem harmless. Before the pig arrives, secure or block access to:
- Cleaning products, pesticides, medications, and other chemicals
- Trash, food waste, and compost
- Toxic plants
- Electrical cords and small objects
- Children’s toys, socks, plastic pieces, and other swallowable items
Use sturdy latches rather than assuming a closed cabinet is pig-proof. Keep food preparation and waste areas inaccessible, and inspect the floor at the pig’s level. Arrange furniture to discourage jumping on or off high surfaces. Ramps are generally preferable to stairs, which can be difficult to navigate and may increase injury risk.
Outdoor housing
An outdoor area should have secure fencing, clean bedding, shade, fresh water, and protection from dangerous weather. Fencing must prevent escape and should keep the pig from contacting feral or wild swine. Outdoor pigs also need a dry, sheltered resting area and a surface that does not remain constantly muddy or contaminated.
Pigs do not cool themselves efficiently by sweating. An environmental temperature of approximately 60°F to 75°F is considered a comfortable range, while temperatures above about 85°F can create a significant overheating risk. In hot weather, provide shade plus a reliable cooling option such as a shallow pool, wallow, or covered pen designed so the pig cannot become trapped. Check outdoor pigs frequently during heat, not just at the beginning and end of the day.

Exercise, rooting, and enrichment
Rooting, searching, and investigating are normal pig behaviors. Trying to eliminate them completely often creates frustration and boredom. Instead, give the pig safe outlets for these behaviors while protecting the house and yard.
Useful activities include:
- Scattering part of the measured daily ration so the pig has to search for it
- Providing a designated rooting area with safe soil or another appropriate substrate
- Using durable, pig-appropriate enrichment that cannot break into small pieces
- Practicing simple training behaviors with tiny portions taken from the daily ration
- Providing supervised exploration and regular movement on safe, non-slip surfaces
Boredom, curiosity, and appetite can contribute to foreign-body ingestion. Do not offer small toys, loose household objects, socks, children’s toys, thin plastic containers, or anything that can be chewed into swallowable pieces. Inspect enrichment items often and remove them as soon as they crack, splinter, or become small enough to swallow. A suspected obstruction is an emergency, not a problem to monitor casually.

Veterinary care throughout a pig’s life
Find the right veterinarian before an emergency
Locate a veterinarian with actual training or experience in potbellied-pig care before acquiring the pig. Many small-animal veterinarians do not receive thorough training in pigs, while a livestock veterinarian may not be prepared to manage a pet pig’s needs. Ask prospective clinics specifically about miniature-pig patients, emergency coverage, anesthesia, hoof and dental procedures, and referral arrangements.
A potbellied pig veterinarian should be able to help with preventive care as well as urgent problems. Establishing that relationship before the pig is sick makes it easier to obtain a baseline examination, develop a vaccination and parasite-control plan, and decide where procedures or emergencies will be handled.
What preventive care may include
At the first visit, bring all available records and be prepared to discuss diet, housing, exposure to other pigs or wildlife, appetite, stool, drinking, exercise, and reproductive status. Depending on history and local disease risks, the veterinarian may recommend:
- A complete physical examination and baseline weight or body-condition assessment
- Vaccination
- Fecal testing and veterinarian-directed deworming
- Evaluation and treatment for sarcoptic mange
- Hoof inspection and trimming
- Dental and canine evaluation
- Spay or neuter planning where appropriate
Young pigs commonly receive an initial vaccination at or after four weeks of age and a second dose three to four weeks later. Boosters are often given every six to twelve months, but schedules vary with the vaccine, the pig’s age and history, and local disease risks. Do not treat those intervals as a substitute for an individualized veterinary protocol.
Hoof care
Hooves grow continuously. Overgrown, cracked, or poorly balanced hooves can cause pain, lameness, infection, and abscesses. Suitable exercise surfaces may help wear the hoof ends, but many indoor pigs and pigs without appropriate terrain still need professional trimming—often annually or more frequently.
Have a veterinarian or qualified professional assess the hooves and show you what normal growth looks like. Sedation or anesthesia may sometimes be necessary. A hoof-care tool can be useful only when the handler has been taught how to use it safely; it is not a replacement for veterinary evaluation, especially when the pig is painful, frightened, lame, or has cracked tissue or an abscess.
Dental and tusk care
Dental care is lifelong. Newborn needle teeth may be trimmed when necessary to protect littermates or the sow. Permanent canine teeth generally erupt at approximately five to seven months, continue growing throughout life, and may need veterinary trimming beginning around one year of age and periodically afterward.
Elongated canines can cause discomfort, a misaligned bite, persistent chewing motions, or heavy salivation. Do not attempt to cut or file tusks at home. Dental procedures can involve pain, bleeding, fractures, or injury to the tooth if performed incorrectly. Have a pig-experienced veterinarian examine the mouth and determine whether trimming or another procedure is needed.
Skin, parasites, and grooming
Parasite prevention
Routine fecal checks help identify intestinal worms, but deworming medication should be selected and directed by the veterinarian. Sarcoptic mange can cause intense itching, rubbing, hair loss, and skin lesions. It may also affect people, so a suspected infestation warrants prompt veterinary attention and appropriate household precautions.

Dry skin
Dry, flaky skin is common in potbellied pigs. Frequent bathing can make flaking worse by removing protective oils. A weekly wipe with a wet towel may be preferable to repeated full baths. If the skin remains dry, irritated, or inflamed, ask the veterinarian about an appropriate moisturizer or supplement.
Fatty-acid supplements add calories and should be used carefully in a species prone to obesity. Itching, sores, crusting, hair loss, or sudden worsening should not be dismissed as ordinary dry skin.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Biosecurity for homes, farms, and multi-pig households
Biosecurity matters particularly when a pig has outdoor access, lives on a small farm, or shares an environment with other pigs. Keep feed, water, bedding, and housing clean; control wildlife and insects; maintain sanitation; and discuss vaccination with the veterinarian.
New or returning pigs should be isolated for at least 30 days. Use separate clothing and footwear for the isolation area, wash hands, and clean and disinfect equipment before it moves between groups. Prevent contact with feral swine and keep wildlife away from feed and water.

Contact a veterinarian and the appropriate animal-health authorities promptly if a pig develops high fever, marked weakness, loss of appetite, red or blotchy skin, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, breathing difficulty, abortions, or sudden death. These signs have multiple possible causes, but some require immediate disease-control action.
Warning signs that need veterinary attention
Pigs can conceal illness until they are seriously affected. Call a veterinarian promptly for:
- Loss of appetite or marked lethargy
- Breathing difficulty, coughing, or unusual respiratory effort
- Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or inability to pass stool
- Sudden changes in drinking or urination
- Lameness, reluctance to move, or a swollen limb
- Severe itching, open sores, crusting, or rapidly worsening skin changes
- Persistent drooling, abnormal chewing, or difficulty eating
- Suspected ingestion of a toy, plastic, medication, chemical, or other foreign object
- Heat stress, weakness, collapse, or unusual panting during hot weather
- A sudden, unexplained behavior change or death
Do not give human medication, restrict water, induce vomiting, or attempt home tusk or hoof surgery unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

| Routine | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every day | Provide fresh water; feed measured portions; observe appetite, stool, urination, movement, breathing, skin, and behavior; check indoor or outdoor safety; provide appropriate enrichment. |
| Every week | Check weight or body condition as advised; inspect hooves, skin, mouth, fencing, bedding, and enrichment items; clean water and feeding equipment. |
| Regularly | Arrange veterinary examinations, fecal checks, parasite control, vaccinations, hoof care, and dental evaluation according to the pig’s individual plan. |
| Before hot weather | Test shade, shelter, water access, ventilation, and cooling equipment. Make sure the pig cannot become trapped in a pool or pen. |
| Before adding a pig | Prepare a 30-day isolation space, separate equipment, a feeding plan, secure fencing, and a relationship with a pig-experienced veterinarian. |
What to budget and prepare for
A potbellied pig’s care costs continue for decades. Plan for complete feed, secure housing and fencing, bedding, enrichment, routine examinations, vaccinations, parasite testing and treatment, hoof trimming, dental procedures, and emergency care. Older pigs may need more frequent monitoring or treatment for arthritis, dental disease, weight problems, or other chronic conditions.

The best purchase is not necessarily the cheapest food, smallest shelter, or most heavily marketed “mini” product. Choose equipment based on the pig’s actual strength and adult size. Ramps, secure latches, shade structures, cooling equipment, durable enrichment, and pig-safe fencing can all be useful, but none replaces supervision or veterinary care. Recheck product availability, seller quality, and suitability for pigs before purchasing.
Bottom line
Potbellied pigs can be rewarding companions, but they are not permanently tiny pets. Plan for approximately 14 to 21 years of care and substantial variation in adult size. A complete measured diet, healthy body condition, safe temperature-controlled housing, daily rooting and exercise opportunities, experienced veterinary care, lifelong hoof and dental maintenance, and good biosecurity give a pig the strongest chance of a long, comfortable life.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do potbellied pigs live?
A healthy potbellied pig may live approximately 14 to 21 years, with many reaching about 15 to 18 years. Genetics, obesity, nutrition, veterinary care, housing, and inherited health problems can change an individual pig’s outcome.
Do potbellied pigs stay teacup-sized?
No. “Teacup pig” is not a standardized breed or size category. A piglet may continue growing until roughly two or three years old or longer, and adult size is strongly influenced by genetics.
What should a potbellied pig eat?
Use a complete mini-pig food formulated for the pig’s life stage and activity level, measure the ration, and count treats and other foods in the daily intake. A veterinarian should adjust the amount for body condition and health.
How can I keep a potbellied pig small?
Never intentionally underfeed a growing pig to keep it small. Nutritional stunting can cause malnutrition and poor development. Weight loss should be gradual and veterinarian-supervised.
How often does a potbellied pig need veterinary care?
Find a veterinarian with specific potbellied-pig or miniature-pig experience before an emergency. Preventive care may include examinations, vaccination, fecal testing, parasite control, hoof care, and dental evaluation.

The Bottom Line
Plan for a 14–21-year commitment and a potentially much larger adult than the piglet suggests. Longevity depends less on keeping a pig artificially small than on maintaining a healthy body condition, providing species-appropriate food and housing, preventing hazards, and arranging regular care with a veterinarian experienced in potbellied pigs.
