A Havapoo is a cross between a Havanese and a Poodle, usually a Toy or Miniature Poodle. These small companion dogs can be bright, affectionate, playful, and highly trainable—but the name does not describe a standardized breed with predictable size, coat, or temperament.
That uncertainty matters when choosing one. A Havapoo may be a good fit for an involved household that can provide companionship, training, brushing, dental care, and regular grooming. It may be a poor fit for someone seeking a guaranteed nonshedding dog, a pet that can stay alone all day, or a low-maintenance small breed.

The Havapoo is sometimes called a Hava-poo, Havadoodle, or Poovanese. Those names do not create separate recognized varieties or a breed standard.

The Havanese is a small companion breed, while the Poodle parent may be Toy or Miniature. The Poodle variety makes a major difference: Toy Poodles are no more than 10 inches at the shoulder, whereas Miniature Poodles are over 10 and no more than 15 inches. Havanese are permitted to stand 8.5 to 11.5 inches, with an ideal height of 9 to 10.5 inches.

There is no official Havapoo standard defining adult height, weight, body proportions, coat, colors, or temperament. A puppy’s eventual size depends on the actual parents, their inherited growth patterns, sex, generation, and other genetic factors. The commonly repeated claim that every full-grown Havapoo weighs less than 15 pounds is not a reliable rule.
Mixed-breed dogs can take part in some American Kennel Club activities through the AKC Canine Partners program, but they are not judged against an AKC Havapoo breed standard.
Appearance and coat
Havapoos can look quite different from one another, including puppies from the same litter. A coat may be:

- Fine and silky or dense and Poodle-like.
- Solid, parti-colored, or multicolored.
- Low-shedding or more noticeably shedding.
The Poodle parent does not guarantee a curly coat, a nonshedding coat, or a particular adult appearance. Coat texture can also change as a puppy matures. A short haircut may make a dog look less fluffy, but it does not change the underlying coat or remove the need for routine care.
Are Havapoos hypoallergenic?
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. Allergic reactions are usually caused by proteins associated with dander, saliva, and other dog materials—not simply by visible loose hair. Some people tolerate a particular low-shedding Havapoo better than another dog, but that cannot be guaranteed from the breed label.
If allergies are a concern, spend time with the specific adult dog or puppy before making a commitment. Keep in mind that individual reactions can vary and that bringing the dog into the home may expose you to more allergens than a brief visit.
Havapoo temperament
Many Havapoos are affectionate, social, intelligent, and eager to interact with their owners. Havanese commonly contribute a strong companion-dog orientation, while Poodles often contribute energy, curiosity, and a desire to learn. These are tendencies, not promises. Genetics, early handling, socialization, training, health, and home environment all affect behavior.

Potential challenges include:
- Barking: boredom, fear, frustration, or a desire for attention can all contribute.
- Difficulty settling alone: a companion-oriented dog may develop separation-related behavior if alone time is introduced too quickly.
- Overexcitement: an intelligent dog without enough activity or structure may invent its own entertainment.
- Sensitivity: harsh corrections can increase fear and damage trust.
Not every Havapoo has separation anxiety, and barking is not inevitable. However, both are sensible risks to manage through gradual training, predictable routines, enrichment, and appropriate veterinary or behavior support when needed.
Training and socialization
Havapoos are generally capable learners, but being clever does not make a dog automatically obedient. Short, frequent reward-based sessions usually work better than repetitive drills or punishment.
- Start with practical skills: teach the puppy its name, recall, calm handling, house-training routines, and a settle cue.
- Practice alone time gradually: begin with brief, successful separations and increase duration only while the puppy remains comfortable.
- Desensitize grooming: pair brushing, ear handling, nail care, face handling, and clipper sounds with treats before these procedures become necessary.
- Socialize carefully: expose the puppy to friendly people, safe vaccinated dogs, surfaces, household sounds, travel, and veterinary handling.
- Continue after puppyhood: socialization is not a one-time project. Continue reinforcing calm behavior in new situations throughout the dog’s life.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior identifies the first three months as the most important puppy socialization period. Follow your veterinarian’s advice about vaccination risk and avoid unsanitized, heavily trafficked dog areas until your puppy is adequately protected.
Exercise and mental enrichment
A Havapoo usually needs regular, moderate physical activity rather than no exercise simply because it is small. The right amount depends on age, health, body size, fitness, weather, and inherited energy level.
Useful activities include age-appropriate walks, interactive play, fetch, trick training, nose work, food puzzles, and obedience games. A healthy adult may also enjoy supervised swimming or low-impact dog sports once physically mature and cleared for the activity. Watch for heat stress, fatigue, limping, or reluctance to continue, particularly in a small dog with a heavy coat.
Mental work is important. Five minutes of learning, scent games, or a food puzzle can be more useful than simply adding distance to a walk when the problem is boredom.
Grooming: the major commitment
Low shedding, if a particular Havapoo has it, does not mean low maintenance. Loose hair can remain trapped in the coat, where it combines with moisture and movement to form mats close to the skin.

- Brush a long or curly coat daily, working in sections down to the skin.
- Arrange professional grooming regularly; the interval depends on coat length, texture, lifestyle, and home brushing.
- Check the ears, especially after swimming or damp weather.
- Keep nails trimmed and paw hair managed as appropriate.
- Clean around the eyes as needed and ask a veterinarian about persistent discharge or irritation.
- Bathe according to skin and coat needs rather than on an arbitrary schedule.
A shorter clip can reduce tangling, but it does not eliminate brushing, ear care, nail care, dental care, or skin checks. Ask a groomer to show you how to use a slicker brush and comb safely; brushing only the visible surface can leave tight mats underneath.
Dental care
Small dogs are particularly prone to dental disease. Introduce tooth-brushing while the dog is young and build the routine slowly. Daily brushing is ideal; brushing several times a week is still worthwhile.
Have a veterinarian check for tartar, inflamed gums, bad breath, painful chewing, and retained baby teeth. Dental treats and dental diets may help, but they are not replacements for brushing and professional veterinary dental care.
Health concerns
A Havapoo can inherit health risks associated with either parent breed. These conditions are possibilities—not diagnoses that every Havapoo will develop.
| Potential concern | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Progressive retinal atrophy and other eye disorders | Inherited eye disease can impair vision; parent eye examinations and relevant DNA testing are important. |
| Patellar luxation | The kneecap can move out of position, causing intermittent or persistent lameness. |
| Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease | A hip-joint disorder seen in some small dogs that can cause pain and lameness. |
| Periodontal disease | Common in small dogs and preventable in part through home care and veterinary treatment. |
| Ear problems | Dense ear hair, allergies, moisture, and swimming can contribute to infection. |
| Hip dysplasia | Particularly relevant to discuss when the Poodle parent is Miniature, though risk is not limited to one variety. |
A mixed-breed label does not guarantee hybrid vigor or freedom from inherited disease. When buying a puppy, ask for documented results for both parents rather than accepting claims that the cross is automatically healthier.

There is no Havapoo parent-club testing protocol, so the breeder should follow recommendations for both parent breeds and for the specific Poodle variety used.
| Parent | Tests to look for |
|---|---|
| Havanese | Annual CAER eye examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist, BAER hearing test, hip evaluation through OFA or PennHIP, and patella evaluation. |
| Toy Poodle | PRCD progressive-retinal-atrophy DNA test, annual ophthalmologist eye examination, and patellar-luxation evaluation. |

Feeding a Havapoo
Choose a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, and monitor body condition rather than relying only on the feeding chart. Treat calories count toward the daily total. Small kibble may be easier for a small dog to eat, but the correct food depends on the individual dog’s size, age, health, and veterinary advice.
Toy and very small puppies may need more frequent meals. A veterinarian can set a schedule based on age, weight, growth, food, and body condition. Do not assume that shakiness or lethargy is simply low blood sugar; those signs can have several causes and may require urgent veterinary assessment.
Havapoos with children and other pets
A Havapoo may live happily with children, cats, and other dogs when introductions are careful and the individual animals are compatible. Its small body is easy to injure, however. Young children should be supervised and taught not to carry, chase, corner, or roughly handle the dog.
Provide a protected resting area and supervise interactions with larger dogs, even friendly ones. The dog’s socialization and temperament matter more than the label “Havapoo.” A household that cannot provide safe handling may be a poor match for this small companion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long do Havapoos live?
There is no well-established, official Havapoo lifespan figure based on comparable registry data. Many may live into their teens, but lifespan varies with genetics, size, inherited disease, weight, preventive care, dental health, and access to veterinary treatment. Treat precise lifespan promises as marketing rather than a guarantee.
Is a Havapoo right for you?
A Havapoo may suit you if you want a small, interactive dog and can provide daily companionship, reward-based training, enrichment, brushing, professional grooming, and dental care. Consider another type of dog if you need a pet that is comfortable alone for long workdays, want a guaranteed allergy-friendly coat, or cannot commit to grooming.

FAQ
Is a Havapoo a recognized AKC breed?
No. The Havapoo is a Havanese-Poodle mixed breed and has no AKC breed standard. Mixed-breed dogs may participate in some AKC activities through Canine Partners.
How big does a Havapoo get?
There is no official Havapoo size range. Adult size depends mainly on whether the Poodle parent is Toy or Miniature, the actual parents’ measurements, genetics, sex, and generation. Do not treat an under-15-pound claim as a guarantee.
Do Havapoos shed?
Some shed very little, while others shed more. Coat texture and shedding vary because Havapoos are mixed-breed dogs. A Poodle parent does not guarantee a nonshedding coat.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Are Havapoos good for people with allergies?
Not reliably. No dog is truly hypoallergenic. A particular low-shedding Havapoo may be tolerated better by some people, but allergy sufferers should spend time with that specific dog before adopting.
How often should a Havapoo be groomed?
Many need daily brushing and regular professional grooming, especially if they have a long or curly coat. The interval depends on coat texture, length, lifestyle, and how thoroughly the owner brushes.
Can Havapoos be left alone all day?
They may struggle with long periods alone because both parent breeds are companion-oriented. Gradual alone-time training, enrichment, and a realistic daily care plan are important; individual tolerance varies.
Are Havapoos easy to train?
Many learn quickly, but they still need consistent, reward-based training. Early house-training, grooming desensitization, socialization, recall, and calm-alone practice are especially useful.
What health tests should Havapoo parents have?
Ask for the recommended tests for both parent breeds. These generally include eye, hearing, hip, and patella evaluations for the Havanese, and eye, PRCD-PRA DNA, patella, and—when applicable—hip testing for the Poodle parent. Review actual results; a CHIC number alone does not prove normal results.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Havapoos can be affectionate, clever, enjoyable companions, but they are not a predictable “hypoallergenic” or maintenance-free package. Expect variation in size, coat, shedding, and behavior. The best match is an individual dog from health-tested parents, supported by early socialization, gradual alone-time training, daily enrichment, regular brushing, professional grooming, and consistent dental care.
