Heavy-Shedding Dog Breeds: Coat Types, Seasons, and Care

Dense double-coated dogs are common heavy shedders. Compare coat types, seasonal patterns and grooming needs without relying on unsupported breed rankings.

Dogs with dense double coats are the most reliable heavy shedders. Common examples include Labrador Retrievers, Corgis, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernards, Pomeranians, Samoyeds, American Eskimo Dogs, and Alaskan Malamutes.

There is no authoritative breed-by-breed shedding ranking. Coat density, season, climate, grooming, and the individual dog all change how much hair you see, so the useful question is how a breed sheds and what care its coat requires.

What makes a dog a heavy shedder?

Shedding is the normal replacement of old hair. A double-coated dog has a protective outer coat and a softer insulating undercoat. The undercoat is the layer that tends to loosen in large amounts, making hair especially visible on floors, furniture, clothing, and grooming tools. The American Kennel Club’s explanation of double-coated breeds uses coat structure as a practical way to understand shedding, rather than presenting a numerical league table.

“Heavy shedding” does not describe one identical pattern. Some dogs release much of their undercoat during seasonal coat changes, while others leave hair throughout the year and produce additional seasonal blowouts. A short outer coat can still carry a dense undercoat, so hair length alone is a poor guide to cleanup effort.

Dog breeds known for substantial shedding

The following groups collect examples identified by the AKC and veterinary guidance. They are categories, not a ranking from most to least hair.

Coat pattern Examples What the coat means for owners
Short double coat Labrador Retriever, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Pembroke Welsh Corgi Short hair can be easy to see on fabric and floors. Weekly brushing helps lift loose undercoat; seasonal shedding may require more frequent sessions.
Medium double coat Border Collie, Australian Shepherd The longer outer hair can catch loose undercoat and form tangles. Regular brushing helps remove released hair and prevent mats.
Long double coat Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard A flat, water-resistant topcoat sits over a thick undercoat. The volume of coat makes section-by-section brushing and seasonal maintenance more demanding.
Dense arctic coat Pomeranian, Samoyed, American Eskimo Dog, Alaskan Malamute These exceptionally dense insulating coats require involved maintenance. Loose undercoat can accumulate quickly when the dog is changing coats.
Other thick-coated examples Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, German Shepherd These breeds are commonly described as having thick double coats or notable shedding. Golden Retrievers, in particular, may shed through the year as well as during heavier periods.

The examples and coat descriptions in the table come from AKC’s double-coat guidance, its overview of dog shedding, and VCA’s coat-care guidance. They establish useful patterns, not a standardized measurement of grams of hair or a definitive “worst shedder.”

Which breeds shed the most?

No comparable, authoritative shedding score is available for these breeds. A claim that one listed breed is objectively number one would imply testing that the cited sources do not provide. Instead, compare prospective breeds on four practical axes:

  • Undercoat density: A thick insulating layer generally means more loose hair when that layer is released.
  • Hair length and texture: Long coats can tangle and hold shed undercoat, while short hairs may spread widely and be harder to spot until they collect.
  • Seasonal versus year-round shedding: Some dogs have conspicuous spring and fall changes; others leave a steady supply of hair between those periods.
  • Grooming effort: The right schedule depends on the individual coat, not just the breed name. A dense long coat usually demands more time per session than a short double coat.

Before choosing a dog, ask whether your household can tolerate visible hair, store grooming tools, and maintain a routine when shedding increases. A breed with less conspicuous hair is not necessarily lower-maintenance if its coat mats easily.

When do heavy-shedding dogs shed?

Seasonal shedders often have their heaviest periods in spring and fall, according to the AKC. VCA describes common heavy cycles in late spring and late fall for several thick-coated examples. Those are general patterns rather than a calendar guarantee: climate, indoor living conditions, daylight exposure, health, and the individual dog can alter the timing and intensity.

Some thick-coated dogs shed noticeably all year. The AKC specifically uses Golden Retrievers as an example of a breed that can shed continuously while also producing heavier seasonal releases. Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds, and other double-coated dogs may likewise leave hair between seasonal changes. Track your own dog for several months instead of assuming that a date on the calendar predicts every coat change.

How to manage shedding at home

For many double-coated dogs, weekly brushing is a sensible starting point. Heavier coats generally need more frequent care when the undercoat is coming out. The AKC recommends adjusting the schedule to the coat and the dog’s actual shedding pattern rather than applying one routine to every breed.

A practical brushing routine

  1. Check the coat and skin first. Look for packed areas, tenderness, bald or thinning patches, and skin changes. Do not drag a tool through a painful mat.
  2. Choose a tool suited to the coat. An undercoat rake or deshedding tool can lift loose undercoat. A wide-tooth steel comb can help with suitable coats and tangles. These tools remove hair that has already loosened; they do not stop the dog from shedding.
  3. Work in small sections. Separate the outer hair so the tool reaches the undercoat without scraping the skin. Use gentle strokes and stop if the dog shows discomfort.
  4. Comb after the main pass. On coats that tangle, a wide-tooth comb can reveal remaining knots and confirm that the hair is separating cleanly.
  5. Increase sessions during coat changes. If the brush is filling rapidly or loose hair is collecting around the home, add sessions temporarily. Return to the dog’s normal schedule when the release slows.
  6. Get help with difficult coats. A professional groomer who is comfortable with double-coated dogs can handle dense coat maintenance or severe tangles more safely than repeated force at home.

Brush outdoors when practical, then clean the grooming area immediately. Regular removal of loose undercoat reduces what is available to fall around the house, but it cannot make a double-coated dog non-shedding.

Tool choices at a glance

Tool Useful for Important limitation
Undercoat rake Loosening and lifting shed undercoat in appropriate dense coats Use gently and according to the coat; excessive pressure can irritate skin.
Deshedding tool Removing loose undercoat during heavier shedding periods It manages released hair; it does not prevent future shedding.
Wide-tooth steel comb Checking for tangles and separating suitable coats after brushing Not every coat needs the same comb, and forcing it through mats can hurt.

These product categories are consistent with the AKC’s grooming recommendations in its shedding guide and double-coat grooming instructions.

Why shaving a double-coated dog does not solve shedding

Shaving removes visible hair temporarily but does not remove the biological cause of shedding. The AKC advises against shaving a double-coated dog as a routine shedding strategy: it can damage the protective topcoat and increase skin risks, while the dog will still shed as hair grows and cycles normally.

There are limited medical or severe-matting situations in which a veterinarian or experienced groomer may recommend clipping. That is different from shaving a healthy coat to reduce cleanup. For ordinary shedding, use coat-appropriate brushing and professional help for mats rather than removing the coat wholesale.

Normal shedding versus abnormal hair loss

Loose hair distributed across the coat is usually part of the normal growth cycle. Alopecia—bald or visibly thinning areas—is a different problem. Contact a veterinarian when hair loss is patchy, accompanied by skin changes or injury, or substantially different from the dog’s usual pattern.

Possible contributors include parasites, stress, an imbalanced diet, hormonal problems, and skin disease. Breed alone cannot identify the cause. The AKC’s hair-loss guidance recommends veterinary assessment for concerning loss rather than trying to treat the coat with stronger brushing or shaving.

Choosing a heavy-shedding breed realistically

A heavy-shedding breed can be a good match if you plan for hair and grooming from the beginning. Use this decision check before committing:

  • Household tolerance: Can everyone live with hair on clothing, upholstery, and floors during peak periods?
  • Time available: Can you provide at least weekly brushing and increase it when the coat is changing?
  • Coat-management budget: Will you have suitable tools and access to a professional groomer if the coat becomes tangled?
  • Observation skills: Are you prepared to notice the difference between ordinary loose hair and bald areas or skin changes?
  • Seasonal planning: Can you schedule extra grooming in the periods when your dog’s coat typically releases more undercoat?

When comparing two breeds, prioritize the coat pattern and maintenance routine over an unsupported “most shedding” list. A short-coated Labrador Retriever may leave abundant hair despite its short outer coat, while a long-coated Newfoundland may require more time per brushing session because there is more coat to section and inspect. Both can be demanding in different ways.

Key takeaway for prospective owners

Dense double coats are the clearest clue that a dog may shed heavily. Labrador Retrievers, Corgis, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernards, Pomeranians, Samoyeds, American Eskimo Dogs, and Alaskan Malamutes are well-known examples, but the sources do not support ranking them. Plan for a coat-specific brushing routine, expect seasonal variation, never rely on shaving to stop shedding, and involve a veterinarian when hair loss looks abnormal.
