If you’re struggling to afford your pet’s food or care, start by searching local resources by city, state, or ZIP code, then call the provider to confirm eligibility, hours, and availability before you travel. Pet food assistance, reduced-fee veterinary services, charitable grants, fundraising, and payment plans are different kinds of help—and what’s available depends on your location and current funding.

Where can I find free pet food and pet supplies near me?

Search Pet Help Finder: choose “Food Pantry and Supplies,” enter your city, state, or ZIP code, and check the listing directly before traveling. You can also use Feeding Pets of the Homeless’ Find Resources Near You map. Some human food pantries distribute pet food, and local animal welfare organizations may offer temporary food or supplies.

Pantries do not all stock pet food, and assistance may be limited or temporary. Call ahead to ask what is available, what documents are required, and whether you need an appointment.

What if I can’t afford a vet or my pet needs emergency care?

For symptoms that may be urgent

Call a veterinarian and describe your pet’s symptoms so the clinic can advise whether immediate care is needed. Do not assume a community clinic or shelter clinic can handle an emergency: some offer urgent care only on a limited basis. If the clinic recommends immediate treatment, ask about the expected cost and whether there is a lower-cost approach or assistance to pursue.

IRIS USA Airtight Pet Food Storage Rolling Container, 30 lb Capacity, Black
  • Food Storage for All Pets: Keep dog kibble, cat dry food, bird seed, pellets, and treats fresh and organized in one versatile 33 Quart container that holds approximately 22–26 lbs of most dry kibble, depending on kibble size—not all 30 lb bags will fit
  • Airtight Freshness Protection: Snap‑lock lid and foam-line seal lock out moisture and humidity, preserving flavor and nutrition while keeping storage areas clean and organized
  • Easy to Move, Store & Refill: Comes with attachable wheels, giving you the freedom to roll the bin from your kitchen pantry to feeding station or tuck it away on a shelf when not in use
  • Multiple Sizes & Lid Colors: Choose from a variety of BPA-free airtight bins in different sizes and lid colors for storing daily and specialty feeds, or snacks; Lightweight polypropylene design—flexible, not rigid like hard-sided bins
  • Space-Saving Dimensions: Measuring 16.5" L × 10.8" W × 18.4" H (16.9" H without wheels), it’s compact enough for pantries, laundry rooms, utility shelves, countertops, or cabinets

For lower-cost veterinary services

Search Pet Help Finder’s “Veterinary Services” listings for financially friendly providers, including clinics offering basic care or spay and neuter services. Contact nearby shelters, community clinics, or veterinary colleges to ask whether they have reduced-fee services or emergency assistance. Services and availability vary by location.

Talk with your current veterinarian

Explain plainly what you can afford and ask whether the clinic can suggest a cost-effective treatment plan, arrange weekly or monthly payments, or refer you to a lower-fee clinic or veterinary college. A second opinion may identify a less expensive option, but it does not guarantee the same treatment plan or outcome.

Where can I find financial assistance for my pet’s care?

Start with local shelters, humane societies, animal welfare groups, and community clinics. Some programs combine medical help with food, behavioral support, housing assistance, or emergency boarding, but eligibility and funding are local. Ask each program who it serves, which expenses qualify, what paperwork is needed, and whether support is currently available.

Example: Humane Society of Charlotte

The Humane Society of Charlotte’s Pet Help Center serves Mecklenburg County, North Carolina—not pet owners nationwide. Its official Pet Help Center page describes temporary food and supply assistance, low-cost clinic services, and vouchers for medical, behavioral, housing-deposit, and emergency boarding costs, subject to available funds. Food clients may receive supplies once every four weeks; quantities vary, and assistance typically lasts up to six months. The organization requests documentation and medical records for financial assistance and notes that response times may increase when requests are high.

AVMF REACH: ask your veterinarian about eligible emergency care

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation’s REACH program is not a grant that pet owners apply for directly. A qualifying veterinarian who is a current AVMA member and works at a participating practice applies for reimbursement after providing eligible immediate care for an illness or condition. The treatment must have been provided within the previous two months; estimates, elective surgery, and routine preventive care are excluded.

The AVMF REACH program page lists support of up to $1,000 per case and $1,000 per applicant per calendar year. Multiple participating veterinarians at one practice may pool support, subject to a clinic cap. Funding is limited, so applications may be partially funded or denied. AVMF reports that REACH supported more than 1,300 pets and families with over $1 million in 2025; that is a reported program outcome, not a guarantee of assistance for an individual case.

American Humane Society Second Chance Grants: for qualifying shelters and rescues

These grants are directed to qualifying 501(c)(3) shelters and rescue organizations, rather than being a general direct-to-owner grant. Eligible cases involve animals that have suffered abuse, cruelty, or neglect; covered expenses can include emergency or specialty care, surgery, diagnostic tests, and recovery support. A Trupanion-funded subset requires participating shelters to be in the Trupanion Adoption Day or Exam Day program. See the Second Chance Grants information for program details.

How do payment plans and fundraising differ from aid?

Payment plans and health-care credit spread or finance the bill; they are not free assistance and must be repaid. Options named in Humane World for Animals’ veterinary-care guidance include VetBilling, CareCredit, and Scratchpay. Confirm that your veterinary practice accepts the option, review the full terms, and make sure the payments fit your budget. Some promotional plans may charge retroactive interest if payments are late.
