How Intelligent Are Cats? What Science Can and Cannot Say

Cats show real cognitive abilities, including food-puzzle problem solving and recognition of their owner's voice, but science has no single reliable cat IQ score.

Cats show real, measurable cognitive abilities: they can learn to solve some problems, tell their owner’s voice apart from strangers’ voices, and remember and respond to people and objects. What science cannot do is reduce all of that to one reliable “cat IQ” score. Researchers test specific abilities one at a time, and results depend on the task, the setting, and whether the individual cat is motivated to take part. The research base is also much smaller than the body of work on dogs, so a definitive ranking of cats against dogs is not supported by current evidence.

Why there is no single cat IQ score

Intelligence in animals is usually split into distinct capacities such as perception, memory, problem solving, and social cognition. A cat that solves a puzzle quickly may tell you little about how it handles a new social situation, and a cat that ignores a test may be uninterested rather than unable. For that reason, feline cognition is best described as a set of separate abilities, each tested with its own method.

A 2015 review by Vitale Shreve and colleagues in Applied Animal Behaviour Science maps the range of topics studied in cat cognition. Those topics include visual and other perception, object permanence, memory, understanding of physical causality, discrimination of quantity and time, responses to human cues, recognition of vocalizations, communication, attachment, personality, and cognitive health. The same review notes that domestic cats have received less research attention than dogs, and that evidence is uneven from one topic to the next. Some areas have a handful of studies; others have almost none. That unevenness is the main reason no overall score exists.

What cats have been shown to do

Solving a food puzzle

In a 2024 study published in Animals, titled “Effects of Socialization on Problem Solving in Domestic Cats,” researchers gave cats a food puzzle that required pulling a tab to release a food reward. Twenty-four of 86 cats solved it. Cats that were more socially oriented toward humans were more likely to solve the puzzle, solved it faster, and approached the task sooner. Age was also related to performance.

These are associations observed in one task. The study does not show that socialization causes better problem solving, and it does not show that a cat which failed this puzzle is less intelligent overall. The puzzle also depended on motivation: a cat that was hungry, bored, or wary of the setup could fail for reasons unrelated to its problem-solving ability. A 2024 review of animal problem-solving research makes the same broader point, that motivation as well as cognition can shape performance. Treat the result as evidence about how cats performed under those conditions.

Recognizing their owner’s voice

The clearest finding on human communication comes from a study by Atsuko Saito and Kazutaka Shinozuka, reported by the University of Tokyo in 2013. Researchers visited homes, tested 20 household cats, and played recordings of the owner and of unfamiliar people calling the cat’s name. Cats most often responded by moving their heads or ears, a form of orienting that shows attention, rather than by walking over or calling back. Overt responses were less common.

The key result came from a subset of 15 cats that had first been habituated to unfamiliar callers. After that habituation, these cats showed a statistically significant recovery of response to the owner’s voice. The finding supports the idea that cats distinguish their owner’s voice from other voices in this experimental setup. It does not show that cats understand spoken language, and it does not show that cats follow human words the way a dog or child might.

Other abilities that have been studied

Perception, memory, object permanence, causality, quantity and time discrimination, responses to human cues, and attachment have all been studied in cats, as the 2015 review lays out. Each area rests on a different set of experiments, and a reader should not assume that a strong result in one area implies strength in the others. If you want to know how a particular ability holds up, look for studies on that specific skill rather than general claims about feline smarts.

Why cats cannot be ranked against dogs yet

Comparisons between cats and dogs are popular, but the evidence does not support a winner. Most dog cognition research has used tests designed around canine behavior, and cat studies have often borrowed those methods. A 2009 review by Saito and Shinozuka in the Japanese Journal of Animal Psychology argued that cat social cognition needs methods suited to how cats actually behave socially and in context, rather than assumptions carried over from dog studies. If a test is built for dogs and a cat ignores it, the result says more about the test than about the cat.

A fair comparison would need to hold several factors constant:

  • The specific ability tested. Compare problem solving with problem solving, and voice recognition with voice recognition, not one overall impression.
  • Fit between task and species. Would the task make sense to a cat’s natural hunting, feeding, and social behavior?
  • Motivation and willingness to participate. A species that will not engage in a test cannot be scored fairly on it.
  • Sample size and study design. Twenty cats tested in homes and a few hundred dogs tested in controlled labs are not directly comparable.
  • Replication. A result that appears in several independent studies carries more weight than a single experiment.

What owners can reasonably infer

  • Cats learn, remember, and respond to specific people and cues. The voice study supports this for the owner’s voice in a controlled setting.
  • A cat’s performance on a task depends on its motivation, its history with people, and the task design. Failure on one test is not a verdict on intelligence.
  • Mental challenges are a sensible part of daily life. Food puzzles are a practical option because the 2024 study used one, though that research did not test retail feeders or show that any product raises a cat’s intelligence. Offer puzzles at a difficulty the cat can manage, and watch whether it engages.
  • Do not expect a cat to understand words in the way people do. The evidence describes recognition of familiar voices, not language comprehension.

What remains unknown

Several basic questions are still open. Researchers have not established a validated overall intelligence measure for cats, and no population statistic for “cat IQ” exists in the sources reviewed here. Many cognitive areas rest on only a few studies, and most cat studies involve small, specific samples. Whether results from one household, one breed, or one puzzle generalize to all cats is not known. Until more work replicates these findings across varied cats and settings, the most accurate answer is the one this article opens with: cats are capable learners with several measurable skills, and their overall intelligence cannot yet be summarized in a single number.

For a broader view of how cat cognition has been studied, the 2015 review by Vitale Shreve and colleagues is the most useful starting point, and it shows clearly where the gaps lie.
