People help animals in many ways: by finding them homes, fostering them, offering practical skills, or stepping in when a rescue needs more hands. These stories, published by Best Friends Animal Society on September 5, 2025, show how different kinds of community support can make a difference for pets and wildlife.
Making adoptable pets visible
Steve Caporizzo uses his news segment, Pet Connection, to bring attention to homeless pets. The Best Friends feature says the segment has helped match “thousands” of pets with families, but it does not give an exact count or a time period. Caporizzo also supports animals through adoption events, fundraising, and fostering.

Visibility can be a meaningful contribution: a story or event may help an adoptable animal reach someone who is ready to provide a home. Community members can ask a local shelter or rescue whether it needs help promoting animals or staffing an adoption event.
Fostering through an established organization
Foster homes give animals temporary care while a shelter or rescue works toward a longer-term placement. The feature includes fostering among the ways Caporizzo supports pets, alongside adoption events and fundraising. If you are considering fostering, contact a local organization to learn what animals need, what support it provides, and what procedures foster caregivers must follow.

Making an elderly pet’s time meaningful
When Honey, a 14-year-old dog, lost her person, SOAR took her in. The organization helped arrange truck rides—something Honey enjoyed. The story is a reminder that care is not only about finding an animal a new home; it can also mean learning what brings that individual comfort and making room for it.
Connecting a wild animal with professional help
A Texas family found an orphaned Mississippi kite and contacted Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. While waiting for pickup, the family improvised a warm wrap for the bird, as the feature recounts. This is an account of what that family did while help was on the way, not a general wildlife-care procedure. For a wild animal in distress, contact a qualified wildlife rehabilitator or local wildlife authority for instructions rather than treating this story as a handling guide.
Rank #2
Coordinating a difficult rescue
Helix, a kitten stranded on an overpass, was rescued with the help of a team using a boom lift and nets. He received veterinary care and was later taken in by Amor Peludo before being adopted. The rescue depended on coordinated help and appropriate equipment, not on an individual attempting a risky recovery alone.
Volunteering skills and practical support
Evening Arts Pet Accessories sells custom items such as bandanas and bow ties. The feature says purchases help support homeless pets and also describes volunteers walking dogs and coordinating photography or grooming support. These examples show how people can contribute time or professional skills as well as money.
- Ask a shelter or rescue whether it needs help with dog walking, photography, grooming, adoption events, or fundraising.
- Offer skills only in coordination with the organization, which can explain its procedures and current priorities.
- If buying an item to support animals, check that the seller clearly states how purchases benefit an animal cause; an ordinary purchase does not automatically make a donation.
Choosing a useful way to help
The best fit depends on what a local organization currently needs and what you can reliably offer. Fostering involves caring for an animal at home; volunteering may call for scheduled time or a specific skill; promoting adoption or helping at an event can bring animals to the attention of potential adopters. Contact a shelter or rescue to ask about its needs and procedures before committing.
The Best Friends feature also said that a donation of $25 or more brought a year of its magazine, which it described as arriving six times a year. Those terms were reported in September 2025 and may have changed, so confirm the current offer directly with Best Friends Animal Society before donating for that benefit.
