Yes. A cat may care for kittens that are not biologically hers, but acceptance is never guaranteed. If you have found kittens, first make sure they are truly orphaned: a mother cat may be nearby or away temporarily. When she cannot care for them, a nursing foster cat may be an option; otherwise, the kittens may need specialized human care with veterinary or rescue guidance.

Can a cat raise another cat’s kittens?

It can happen, but there is no reliable way to predict whether a particular cat will accept a litter, and the available guidance does not establish a success rate. An ASPCA account describes Charlie, an adult male cat who groomed and comforted unrelated foster kittens. ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor Adi Hovav called him “the best ‘kitten raiser helper cat’”; this is an individual example, not evidence that most cats will behave the same way. Read the ASPCA account.

For kittens needing milk, a nursing mother may be able to foster them. VCA lists fostering with another nursing mother as a possible care route in some cases, and Alley Cat Allies advises contacting local veterinarians, shelters, and rescues to ask whether a nursing cat or experienced caregiver is available. Whether a foster cat accepts kittens depends on the individual situation; arrange the introduction and care with professional guidance.

What should you do if you find kittens outside?

Watch from a distance if they seem safe and well

Do not assume kittens have been abandoned just because their mother is not visible. She may be away looking for food or waiting for people to leave. If the kittens appear healthy and are in a safe place, observe quietly from a distance for a few hours rather than approaching or moving them. ASPCA cautions that “no one can care for a kitten like their mom can!” in the context of leaving kittens with a mother who is temporarily away. See ASPCA’s found-kitten guidance.

Get help promptly if they are ill, injured, or in danger

Contact a veterinarian, local shelter, or rescue promptly if a kitten appears sick or injured, or if the location is unsafe. If the mother does not return after a period of observation, ask those organizations about a nursing foster cat or an experienced kitten caregiver. Their advice can help determine whether intervention is needed and which care route fits the kittens’ condition.

Which care route fits the situation?

Care route When it may fit What to consider
Biological mother The mother is present and able to care for the litter. ASPCA recommends food, dry, clean shelter, and monitoring. It says kittens can enter home foster care when they can eat wet food on their own, around four to five weeks old. That is guidance for this transition, not a reason to separate younger kittens from a capable mother.
Another nursing mother The biological mother is unavailable or cannot raise the kittens, and a suitable nursing cat may be found. Ask a veterinarian, shelter, or rescue about availability and suitability. Acceptance is not assured, so the kittens’ care still needs monitoring.
Human hand-rearing No capable mother or suitable nursing foster is available, or professional guidance indicates hand-rearing is needed. This involves more than feeding: young kittens need appropriate warmth, nutrition, sanitation, and monitoring, and may need help eliminating. Coordinate the plan with a veterinarian or experienced rescue caregiver.

These options are practical pathways, not outcomes ranked by comparative trials. The cited veterinary and animal-welfare guidance does not provide numerical success rates for placing kittens with another mother versus hand-rearing.

What does hand-rearing involve?

Orphaned kittens have several needs that change as they grow. VCA identifies warmth, humidity, nutrition, elimination, sanitation, and social stimulation as parts of kitten care. Very young kittens may need stimulation to pass urine and stool. A veterinarian or rescue can advise on care specific to their age and condition; do not treat a bottle or milk replacer as a substitute for that guidance.

A logbook can help a caregiver and veterinarian track each kitten’s weight, food intake, elimination, activity, and developmental milestones. Alley Cat Allies’ kitten age guide can help with age estimation, while its kitten-care kit lists supplies including a nursing bottle. For orphaned kittens that need replacement feeding, ask a veterinarian or rescue which feeding plan and supplies are appropriate.

How can you tell how old the kittens are?

Age affects feeding, elimination, warmth, and whether kittens can eat on their own, so estimate it with care rather than relying on size alone. Alley Cat Allies provides a guide to estimating a kitten’s age. If the kittens are very young, seem unwell, or you are unsure how to care for them, contact a veterinarian or rescue for an assessment.
