There is no single arrival date for every hummingbird or location. Many migratory hummingbirds reach the southern United States early in spring and move north later, while some western species arrive much earlier or live in an area year-round. Check current local sightings as spring approaches, but treat them as approximate observations—not a precise forecast.
If you use a feeder, have it ready ahead of the usual local season. A feeder does not determine when hummingbirds migrate, and putting one out does not keep them from leaving.
Why arrival timing varies
Spring migration follows different routes, and species do not share one schedule. Location, habitat, and the species that lives or migrates through your area all matter. These examples illustrate the variation; they are not a complete arrival calendar for every state, province, or neighborhood.
| Species or region | What to expect | What this means for local timing |
|---|---|---|
| Southern United States | Some migratory hummingbirds reach the southern U.S. as early as February. | Many locations farther north see migration later in spring, but there is no single date for a whole region. |
| Allen’s Hummingbird in coastal scrub and chaparral | Cornell Lab says Allen’s Hummingbirds can arrive as early as January. | Do not assume every western hummingbird follows an eastern migration calendar. |
| Calliope Hummingbird | Cornell Lab describes Calliope Hummingbirds moving north along the Pacific Coast in spring and south along the Rocky Mountains in fall. | Route and species can matter as much as a broad regional label. |
| Places with year-round or winter residents | Some hummingbirds remain in parts of the West and South. | A winter or early-season sighting may be a resident or wintering bird, not proof that the broader migration wave has arrived. |
These examples come from Cornell Lab’s Allen’s Hummingbird guide and Calliope Hummingbird guide. Look up the species likely near you before relying on a general spring calendar.

How to check hummingbird sightings near you
Hummingbird Central’s spring map can help you follow broad seasonal movement and nearby reports. Its 2026 map collected viewer-submitted sightings from late January through May and stopped posting on May 31, 2026. That map is historical, not a forecast for spring 2027.
- Open Hummingbird Central’s map page and look for the current spring project when it becomes available.
- Check sightings near your area and note which species were reported.
- Look for nearby reports over time rather than treating one sighting as a precise arrival date.
- Use the map as a seasonal signal, then verify the species and local context with a reliable field guide or local birding resource.
Hummingbird Central says reports may take several days to appear, not every report is posted, and map locations may be near a city center rather than the exact sighting address. Coverage and timing therefore vary. Use reports to follow broad movement, not as a promise that a bird will reach your yard on a particular day.

When should you put out a hummingbird feeder?
If you want to watch hummingbirds at a feeder, put it out before the usual local season and check current reports as spring approaches. The right timing depends on the species and location. A feeder is optional: it does not make birds arrive earlier, guarantee visits, or prevent migration.
Prepare nectar safely
Cornell Lab recommends mixing one part table sugar with four parts water. Food coloring is unnecessary.

Keep the feeder clean
Wash the feeder whenever you refill it, and pay closer attention in warm weather, when nectar can spoil faster. Cornell Lab’s webinar guidance recommends cleaning at each refill, often every couple of days, and more often in hot weather. An easy-to-disassemble feeder can make thorough cleaning simpler.

- BUILT FOR SMALL SONGBIRDS — AND IT KEEPS THE BIG ONES OUT: Six small ports with 1.4" perches are sized for finches, chickadees, sparrows and nuthatches. Larger birds like blue jays, grackles and cardinals can't get a grip, so they stop raiding the tube and flinging the small seed on the ground to get at the big kernels. If you want cardinals or woodpeckers too, pair this with a platform or hopper feeder — this one is deliberately the small-bird station.
- WIDE LIFT-TOP + SEE-THROUGH TUBE — REFILL IN SECONDS: Lift the metal lid straight up and pour; the opening is wide enough that you are not funnelling seed through a narrow neck. The clear tube shows the level from across the yard, so you refill before it runs empty instead of checking by opening it. Holds 1.5lb of sunflower, safflower or mixed seed — a small tube on purpose: seed gets eaten before it can sit and go stale.
- HOW TO CLEAN IT: The lid lifts off and the tube is clear, so you can see exactly what needs cleaning. The base is fixed — not removable — so here is what works: tip the feeder upside down and tap to empty packed seed, run a bottle brush or pipe cleaner in through the ports, rinse, then stand it upside down until fully dry before refilling. Do this every 2-3 refills and after any spell of wet weather, so damp seed never sits at the bottom.
- METAL LID, BASE AND PORTS: The lid, base, perches and all six port surrounds are metal, so beaks and claws land on metal rather than thin plastic; the seed tube itself is clear polycarbonate, which is what lets you see the level. Note: this is not a squirrel-proof feeder — the ports are open and a determined squirrel can reach seed. If squirrels are a problem in your yard, hang it from a pole with a baffle, which is what owners who have no squirrel trouble do.
- HANG IT WHERE YOU CAN WATCH — POLE, BRANCH OR SHEPHERD'S HOOK (POLE NOT INCLUDED): The metal hanger fits a standard shepherd's hook, deck pole or tree branch. Most owners hang it within sight of a kitchen or living-room window — finches find a new feeder within days, and you get the show from inside. Works all four seasons, with the busiest months being late autumn and winter when wild food runs short. A ready gift for a parent, grandparent or anyone who watches birds.
