This Is What a Dolphin’s Vagina Looks Like—and Why It Has a Strange Internal Fold

In the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the vagina generally has a large fold of tissue that projects into and bisects the inside passage, or vaginal lumen. The fold’s function is not settled: comparative and biomechanical studies support possible barrier and force-dissipation roles, but do not prove one purpose or show exactly what happens during live mating.

The familiar three-dimensional image is an anatomical model, not a photograph of a living dolphin. A University of Florida visual guide shows the bottlenose dolphin’s prominent circumferential fold in the cranial, or upper, vagina.

What does the internal fold look like?

The vagina is the passage connecting the external opening to the cervix. In examined common bottlenose dolphin specimens, a large fold projects into that passage and divides its open space. It is a feature of the vaginal tissue, not a separate organ.

A cast or other three-dimensional view can make the fold and the space around it easier to see than a flat image. The University of Florida’s Drost Project visual guide provides an institutional view of bottlenose dolphin reproductive anatomy.

What studies have found

A 2016 study examined reproductive tracts from 18 female common bottlenose dolphins. Its histological assessment used 90 tissue samples from five specimens and found smooth rather than skeletal vaginal muscle. Smooth muscle is consistent with autonomic control of contractions; it does not support describing the fold as a consciously operated valve.

A 2017 comparative study examined 59 female cetaceans from 20 species and six families. It found substantial variation in the number and size of vaginal folds. The bottlenose pattern should therefore not be treated as a universal blueprint for dolphins or other cetaceans.

The researchers proposed that folds may present physical barriers that complicate the pathway of seawater and/or sperm through the vagina. This is a hypothesis, not a settled explanation for the fold’s function.

What does the fold do?

The function remains uncertain. A 2019 biomechanical study tested postmortem common bottlenose dolphin reproductive tissue and found the fold region stiffer in indentation tests than other sampled regions. The results support the possibility that the fold acts as a mechanical barrier and helps dissipate forces.

Because the study tested postmortem tissue, it is not a direct observation of living mating behavior. Taken together, the evidence supports a cautious conclusion: the fold changes the shape and mechanics of the vaginal passage, and it may affect how seawater, sperm, or physical forces move through it. Researchers have not established a single definitive function.

How scientists studied the anatomy

  1. Examination of specimens: Researchers dissected reproductive tracts to document their structure and variation.
  2. Histology: Tissue samples were examined microscopically, including to identify vaginal muscle type.
  3. Comparative analysis: Researchers compared fold patterns across cetacean species to describe variation and consider possible functions.
  4. Biomechanical testing: Postmortem tissue was tested to assess properties such as stiffness; those tests help evaluate mechanical hypotheses but do not reproduce live mating.

These methods provide evidence about anatomy and tissue behavior, but they do not establish exactly how the fold functions in a living dolphin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all dolphins have the same vaginal fold?

No. The comparative study found variation in fold number and size across cetaceans. The prominent fold described here is the common bottlenose dolphin pattern, not a universal one.

Is the fold a separate organ?

No. It is tissue projecting into the vaginal lumen, the inside passage of the vagina.

What is the fold for?

Its function is unresolved. Studies support possible mechanical-barrier and force-dissipation roles, while researchers have also proposed that folds may complicate the path of seawater and sperm. These remain possibilities rather than proven purposes.

Can the fold consciously open or close?

The bottlenose dolphin study found smooth rather than skeletal vaginal muscle. That finding is consistent with autonomic rather than ordinary conscious voluntary control; it does not support describing the fold as a consciously operated valve.
