There is no single best high-fiber food for every cat. Fiber type, hydration, and the reason for a cat’s symptoms matter more than the largest fiber percentage on a label. For constipation or recurring hairballs, discuss the right diet with your veterinarian first: constipation has multiple causes, and some cats need a low-fiber diet or other treatment instead.
What “high fiber” means for a cat
Fiber is not one interchangeable ingredient. Soluble and insoluble fibers can affect water balance, stool consistency, and intestinal transit differently. Psyllium, for example, can form a water-binding gel that may help feces pass; some poorly fermentable fibers add bulk. The effect depends on the fiber and the cat’s condition, so a higher crude-fiber number alone does not establish that a food is a better choice.

Wet food is often suggested to increase water intake, since dehydration can contribute to constipation. But canned foods vary in fiber, and a wet format is not automatically appropriate for every cat’s clinical needs.
Which high-fiber cat foods are supported by the available product information?
The documented options below are veterinary formulas, not a tested ranking of eight foods. Their indications differ, and product formulas and availability can vary by country.

| Royal Canin Feline Gastrointestinal Fiber Response | US product page lists powdered psyllium seed husk and a maximum crude-fiber guarantee of 4.7%. | Dry veterinary formula; formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance. The manufacturer advises consulting a veterinarian about suitability and lists select retailers and veterinary clinics as purchase channels. US product details. |
| Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Hairball | UK product page describes a blend of soluble and insoluble fibers, including psyllium, for recurrent hairballs and conditions requiring increased fiber. | Dry veterinary formula. The UK page says it is not suitable for growth, obstipation, or obstructive megacolon. It is UK-specific; check local availability and formula before considering it elsewhere. UK product details. |
These manufacturer descriptions identify intended uses and label information; they are not a head-to-head clinical comparison. Do not compare the 4.7% maximum crude-fiber guarantee with a different fiber measure as though the figures were equivalent.
Does a constipated cat need more fiber?
Not necessarily. Constipation can have different causes, and veterinary recommendations vary: some approaches use highly digestible, low-fiber diets, while others use high-fiber foods or supplements. A veterinarian needs to assess the cause and severity before choosing an approach.

Royal Canin Academy describes one uncontrolled trial of a moderate-fiber commercial diet in 66 constipated cats. Fifty-six completed the trial; the source reports that all completers ate the diet and had improved fecal scores. Because there was no control group or control diet, this does not show that the food alone caused the improvement. The accessible account does not provide the study year or original publisher.
Constipation can progress to obstipation or megacolon. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, severity, and chronicity; severe obstipation or megacolon may require surgery. Food should not be treated as a substitute for diagnosis or veterinary care.

How hairball diets differ from constipation diets
Hairball-control and constipation diets can both contain added fiber, but their indications are not interchangeable. The UK Gastrointestinal Hairball formula is described for recurrent hairballs and certain conditions requiring increased fiber, while its manufacturer explicitly excludes cats with obstipation or obstructive megacolon. That distinction is a reason to choose by diagnosis and product guidance, not by the broad “high fiber” label.

Check with a veterinarian before switching foods or adding a fiber supplement, especially if symptoms persist, recur, or seem severe. Some cats with suspected food hypersensitivity or inflammatory bowel disease may need a highly digestible, low-fiber diet; fiber supplementation can be unsuitable for some individuals. A veterinary assessment can help determine whether diet, hydration, or another treatment is appropriate.
