To keep a cat engaged while home alone, make safe opportunities for foraging, hiding, climbing, scratching, resting and watching part of the home. Start with a few activities your cat already enjoys: hide some of its usual food, offer an easy puzzle, rotate safe toys and provide a comfortable lookout. Keep string and fishing-rod toys for supervised play, and seek veterinary or qualified behavior advice if distress is persistent or intense.
How to set up enrichment for your cat
Enrichment is not a checklist every cat must complete. Cats Protection’s 2025 environmental-enrichment guide recommends tailoring the home to the individual cat’s needs, with suitable food, water and litter provision, hiding and resting places, scratching facilities, toys and feeding puzzles. Introduce changes gradually and watch what your cat actually uses.

15 safe ways to keep a home-alone cat engaged
Food and foraging
- Hide a little of the usual dry food. Place a portion of the cat’s measured daily ration in several easy-to-find spots. Begin with obvious locations so the activity is rewarding rather than frustrating.
- Try an easy food puzzle. Choose a puzzle the cat can operate, show how it works, and increase difficulty only if the cat is comfortable. Feeding puzzles vary in style and challenge; Cats Protection offers guidance on introducing feeding enrichment.
- Make a simple cardboard or paper feeder. A homemade puzzle can encourage exploration, but supervise it closely and remove it if your cat tries to eat the material. The ASPCA’s DIY enrichment guidance stresses active supervision.
Use food from the cat’s normal daily allowance rather than adding puzzle treats on top. Cats Protection warns that puzzle food should be included in the weighed ration.

Play and discovery
- Rotate a small selection of solo toys. Put away some safe toys and bring them back later so the available selection changes. Check toys regularly for damage or loose parts.
- Create a comfortable window-viewing spot. A stable perch can give a cat a place to watch outside. Consider an outdoor feeder only if its placement is safe for your cat and local wildlife.
- Offer a cardboard box or paper exploration area. These can provide places to investigate and hide. Apply the same supervision rule to DIY materials, especially if your cat chews or swallows them.
- Try a bird or squirrel video as an option. Some cats watch screens; others ignore them. See how your cat responds rather than assuming video will keep it occupied.
Places to rest, climb and scratch
- Provide a quiet, covered refuge. A cat should be able to retreat somewhere it feels secure.
- Add a stable elevated resting or observation place. A cat tree or suitable shelf can offer a different view and a place to perch, if your home has room for a secure setup.
- Keep scratching surfaces available. Cats Protection includes scratching facilities among the elements of an enriched environment. Offer a stable surface your cat can reach and use.
- Make room for climbing and movement. Arrange safe routes between resting and observation spots, without unstable furniture or access to hazards.
Keep food, water and litter accessible, but do not put them directly beside the cat’s main hiding place. Cats Protection’s advice on creating hiding places recommends giving these resources some separation from a refuge.

Before you leave and when you’ll be away longer
- Play a short hunting-style game before departure. Interactive play provides an outlet for hunting behavior. Put the fishing-rod toy away when the session ends.
- Choose only suitable toys for unsupervised access. Avoid leaving string or fishing-rod toys out: a cat can become entangled, and swallowed string can cause a life-threatening problem if it gets stuck in the gut. See Cats Protection’s safe-play advice.
- Check the basics before leaving. Make sure the cat can reach its food, water and litter, and that any enrichment left out is intact and appropriate for that individual cat.
- Arrange a trusted caregiver for unusually long absences. A person who can spend time with the cat is a better response to a long absence than relying on toys alone.
- Get advice if distress persists. If your cat shows intense or ongoing distress, or broader behavior changes, contact a veterinarian or qualified behaviorist rather than trying to solve it with more toys.
How to choose a food puzzle
If you buy a puzzle feeder, prioritize whether your cat can use it without frustration, whether it is safe to leave with that cat, whether it suits the food and portion, how easily it can be cleaned, and how much space it requires. The cited guidance supports food puzzles as a category; it does not establish a tested best model or brand ranking. A simple homemade option can be an alternative if it is actively supervised and safe for your cat.

Behavior while a cat is alone is not automatically separation anxiety. Cats Protection notes that boredom, frustration, a disrupted routine and health issues can also be involved. Timing may help describe what you observe: distress immediately around departure differs from restlessness that develops after many hours without stimulation, but timing alone does not diagnose a cause. Persistent vocalization, intense distress or wider behavior changes warrant advice from a veterinarian or qualified behaviorist. Cats Protection’s guidance on cats home alone discusses possible causes and when to seek help.
